adhd

202436 tn?1326474333 Has anyone tried this program/diet as a non-medicinal approach to add/adhd/behavioral problems? If so, what resources have you used. My daughter was diagnosed with dysthymic disorder (depression) with underlying adhd behaviors. I am NOT in favor of medicating a 6 yo and have heard great things about the feingold diet and other elimination diets to pinpoint foods/additives/artificial colorings/flavorings that can trigger allergies and cause unfavorable behaviors.
Avatar f tn My son's doctor put my son on a diet that relates to ADHD, dairy free, gluten free and no chocolate. My son has no formal diagnosis as far as ADHD and has been completely ruled out for Autism. The diet is expensive and I'm having a hard time taking things from my son he loves with no diagnosis and to top that all off there doesn't seem to be any behavioral effects. What sort of science is this special diet based on?
Avatar m tn If you look on page 3 I posted an article I found in a magazine on an ADHD diet. I thought it was interesting. You can try it and see if it works. It should still be on page 3 or 4. The post title says ADHD diet in it. Best wishes!
Avatar f tn Been reading a lot about foods that irritate ADHD and help with the symptoms. Also have been seeing a lot of postings about supplements/vitamins to use to help control ADHD symptoms. My son is 6 and has ADHD. Anyone out there with successful foods/supplements/vitamins that help? Thoughts?
Avatar f tn My son has been on the Feingold diet for mild autism and adhd symptoms. I noticed on the website that this diet can help with depression and suicidal thoughts. It also helps with violent behavior and insomnia. I've been adding a lot of the food into my everyday life and can personally tell you I feel pretty good. The diet eliminates foods with chemicals and dyes and even apples. Goodbye M&Ms and Skittles. To get the shopping guide and brochures is a bit expensive.
Avatar f tn We have had problems in the past with this but I thought by now it would have stopped. She wears pull ups to bed because she pees every night. Now the past two nights she is pooping her pull up. Her mother isn't in the picture really at all. She has been diagnosed with ADHD and mood disorder which this past month we took her off her stimulants and started a vitamin regiment and trying to control her ADHD with diet.

Avatar f tn It can have symptoms very similar to ADHD but is treated very differently. A great site I have found for information on this is here - http://www.sensory-processing-disorder.com/sensory-processing-disorder-checklist.html So those are the quick thoughts. I would definitely look at the SIDS site because you do treat that differently from ADHD. and he could have both. What is distressing to me is that he could have ADHD and the only help the doctors gave you is to prescribe meds?
193137 tn?1367880063 Has anyone experienced any success with the Feingold diet? My boyfriend's nephew has ADHD and they're trying the Feingold diet and they think it's helping.
1744272 tn?1314209044 Now that he is living with me, I very few of the problems that my parents said were ADHD symptoms, even when he is not on his meds and he has gained more in three months on the meds here than he did in the last year he lived there. My mother and step-father would not tell him no ever, feed him junk food and basically spoiled him rotten like a grandparent should but not a primary care giver. Could his diognosis of ADHD be caused by being spoiled or is he just growing out of it.
Avatar f tn Perhaps reducing her current med dosage or taking breaks from it on weekends would help. Perhaps improving the quality of her diet would help. Or perhaps a different ADHD medication would be a better fit for her now instead. Regardless, this sounds like it could develop into some more serious OCD behaviors and you need to address it now, and piling a second med on top of it may not really be the best answer.
Avatar n tn I had a friend who recently tried an elimination diet and slowly added foods back that she eats regularly, she found out that she was allergic to wheat, rhy, some flour products, sweeteners, etc. that were causing the ADHD symptoms... She has since started eating whole foods and good fats and her symptoms have vastly improved... It could be something as little as the dyes in foods, or sweeteners, etc...
Avatar n tn I would take medication at that young of an age as a last resort. Diet is a great way to start working on it. I changed my diet after I got clean from pain medications, and it amazed me how much difference a change in diet can make. Just an idea. Keep posting, im sure others have many good ideas as a starting place. Also an ADHD forum is on medhelp. MAybe they would have other ideas and support for you. Pleas keep posting here if it helps. Thats what we are here for.
Avatar f tn I believe that diet can help a lot with the symptoms and characteristics of both diagnoses. I recommend looking into all forms of therapy and not just a synthetic med a doctor prescribes.
Avatar n tn Ritalin can certainly cause aggression IF it is given to someone who does not have ADHD or ADD. If a person does have AD/HD it should help with the aggression as they will gain more control over themselves. You didn't mention what the reason was that he was taking ritalin. If he does have AD/HD then when the meds wear off he may be going back to his normal self. I guess the question would be - did he have the same problems before he started the meds.
Avatar n tn I think that it certainly is possible that diet can play a role in ADHD like symptoms. The problem with the Feingold diet was that he came up with this in 1970 when there really wasn't much research on many of these behavioral problems or there causes. Second, the diet eliminates natural salicylates and most of these foods are very healthy foods, and important sources of some very important items like omega 3's.
Avatar f tn Are there any diets that help control the adhd so that I can reduce the amount of drugs taken?
Avatar m tn Does this sound like it could be a behaviour relating to ADHD? As i said he does display many symptoms of adhd...disorganised, forgetfull, temper tantrums, easily distracted, struggles at school, is diruptive in class, clumsy, fidgety etc.... but i do feel that this innapropriate behaviour towards others is the thing that is causing misery in all our lives at the moment...my son included!
89592 tn?1391274422 If your thyroid is not working right, it can really mess you up and depending on the problem give you ADHD like symptoms. So wondering if at least part of the problem was due to his thyroid. Mood swings and depression would certainly fit thyroid problems. Here is a link to all ADHD meds that may be helpful. http://www.leeheymd.com/charts/adhd_1.
Avatar f tn There is an excellent chance that her anxiety is due to the ADHD and SPD, and some SPD symptoms are also autism symptoms. Here is a very good link to SPD - http://www.sensory-processing-disorder.com/sensory-processing-disorder-checklist.html And, if you have any SPD questions, we have a great forum with a leader who has successfully dealt with this with her own child at about the same age. It wouldn't hurt to read some of her own posts.
Avatar m tn //www.currentpsychiatry.com/home/article/adhd-or-bipolar-disorder-age-specific-manic-symptoms-are-key/2e1d5ec4615c5b9da40d435fca5f560c.html Your folks need to find a good child psychiatrist that specializes in ADHD. Any idea who came up with the Bipolar diagnosis? And by the way, its a pretty common mistake to mix up the two. and if it is ADHD, there is a ton of info I can send you. Also the medication is a lot easier on the child then bipolar stuff.
Avatar f tn Because each child is different, you and the school phycologist would assess what she needs ( based on her doctors recommendation after an assessment has been made to find where her areas of weakness are ) that would help her. I have found that ADHD has many symptoms and changes as a child grows. The 504 Plan will need to be updated yearly and can help along with other treatments. Diet, vitamins, and a behavioral therapist can be most helpful.
Avatar n tn Your son may well display ADHD, but it is important to arrange a thorough evaluation and not rush too quickly to the diagnosis. The on-line surveys can be useful tools to see if a person might display symptoms typical of ADHD, but a thorough assessment will consider a child's medical history, family history, current functioning at home and in school, possible alternative explanations for the symptoms identified on the surveys, etc.
Avatar f tn My son has ADHD. We have been successfully treating it with medication for 6 yrs now. A therapist recently said that ADHD has been proven to actually be an allergy to chlorine. I have tried researching this online but have not found anything that supports this. I have read where drinking filtered water that has removed the chlorine is helpful but this is the closest I have found online that ADHD might actually be an allergy to chlorine.
Avatar f tn Note also that the diagnosis is often in error. Sleep apnea can produce the same symptoms as can a high sugar diet. And sometimes it is merely the result of poor parenting. True ADD,ADHD is much rarer than you think.
