521840 tn?1348840771 These same childhood symptoms take on different forms in adults with ADHD. For example, most adults with ADHD are not floridly hyperactive. Instead, an adult is more likely to report ‘inner restlessness’ or problems with impulsivity. Symptoms of ADHD impact important adult tasks such as remembering to pay the mortgage, paying attention while driving, or managing your children’s schedules.
Avatar n tn Dear Renee, Generally, pediatric mental health clinicians prefer to wait until the age of seven or so to diagnose ADHD, because so many of the symptoms (inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity) of ADHD are typical of the behavior of yopung (particularly pre-school) children. Having said this, it does happen that ADHD is diagnosed in pre-school children, and medication is sometimes prescribed in these circumstances.

Avatar f tn My son grew out of it at about age 15. We didnt use medication but he was bad. He is nearly 18 now + doing great!
Avatar f tn I'd like to remind you that ADHD is the most common intitial diagnosis for any recalcitrant behavior. That doesn't mean that is wrong, just that it may not explain all of a child's symptoms. My boys were diagnosed ADHD and then, a few years later, OCD was tacked on to one and ODD to the other. Do the "silent seizures" have any effects on your grandson's brain? What medications has he already tried?

Avatar m tn But to answer your question, ya they could have ADHD, but right now they sound like all the posts I read on the child behavior forum about "my out of control 5 year old." These kids are only a year apart. They have had 4 years of learning how to get attention. My guess is that the parents have been pretty absent most of the time. So recommendations: The five year old is certainly old enough to be in preschool or even kindergarten. Divide and conquer!
Avatar n tn excessive talking, making noise all the time, saying inappropriate things to boys and girls, he's not very affectionate, he'll kiss me every once in awhile, but tries to do it "movie style", he "performs" for people all the time. He was adopted at the age of 17 mos from Russia. His pediatrician says he does not have FAS, RAD, ADHD (although he hasn't been formally checked for this). Anyone have any ideas?
5856747 tn?1403348682 ADHD is diagnosed on the bases of the child’s behaviour alone. This may be done using the International Classification of Diseases or ICD-10. There are no other tests to confirm the diagnosis and this again may cause difficulty in accepting ADHD as a disorder. Features of ADHD behaviour will include: • Inattention to instructions. • Inability to learn or retain. • Inability to stay with a specific task or to complete it. • Inability to hold attention to what is being said to them.
Avatar f tn I have 3 boys and 2 of them have ADHD and ODD and my youngest we believe have ADHD too just waiting on the therapist. But my problem is that my 8yr old will not listen he steals, destroys stuff and still throws major temper tantrums. He will hit himself or try and hurt him self when he is having the tantrums. Avatar m tn Children who are or have been on ADHD drugs have an increased risk of committing suicide.Even the American Psychiatric Association admits that suicide is the major adverse reaction of withdrawal from these drugs. 793266 tn?1275479663 Today I started adding fish oil and a B-complex vitamin for the adhd symptoms, and vitamin D for thyroid/mood. I am taking fish oil at dinner, B at all meals, and D at one meal. I am hoping these will increase energy, memory, and decrease AdHd symptoms and mood swings.

Avatar f tn They can assess a person/child against a list of symptoms that are collectively named ADD/ADHD - for lack of much better understanding. When they test for the flu, they can list the symptoms and check them off (temp, ache, cough, etc), but they can also TEST for a virus and yes/no its there. But in medicine those symptoms alone can mean many things. Same for attention and hyperactivity. 2.
Avatar f tn Hello, the key to determining if a young child has ADHD is to determine to what degree his symptoms are occurring across settings, and how much his behavior differs from that of other boys his age. Much of what you describe is common unwanted behavior in a boy his age, though it is clear that he needs to learn new skills to follow rules and keep himself safe.
Avatar f tn Is it normal for an 8 year old boy with ADHD to go through such things like not listening and when he doesnt get his way he throws the biggest fit I have ever seen. Also his dad remarried and his stepmom has two boys of her own 7 and 6 they have messed around with each others penis's a couple of times is that normal for boys to do that?? She totally thinks he wants to control the other two boys on the visits.
Avatar n tn I have wondered if Bipolar and Schizophrenia are connected genetically with ADHD. I have two eldery Aunts (My Moms Sisters) who were both diagnosed in thier late 20's with Schizoprenia. However, they have changed the diagnosis for one Aunt, first she was called manic depressive, and now it's bipolar.
Avatar n tn Hello, first grade is a very tough adjustment for many children, particularly boys. The symptoms you are describing could reflect ADHD. They sound like the typical descriptions I hear from families of children who meet diagnostic criteria for the disorder. There is research to suggest that ADHD is heritable, however that does not necessarily mean you child has it because some relatives do, just that he is at higher risk.
Avatar n tn Children who ingested lead paint or inhaled lead-containig gasoline had symptoms mimicking ADHD . An ADHD-like presentation has been associated with alcohol intake or cocaine ingestion during pregnancy . There are some familial forms of ADHD , especially in boys . Disease of the thyroid gland can be another cause . In almost all these cases , Anti-ADHD medications seem to be beneficial.

Avatar f tn My 19 yr old was diagnosed a long time ago ADHD and OCD. Is it possible that my 11 yr old may have it too. SHe shows a few symptoms of ADHD but has not been properly diagnosed yet. My 8 yr old's dr told me that usually most all of them would then. IS that possibly true?
Avatar n tn You will survive and so will your children. Out of 4 children I had 2 boys that were ADHD and 1 with ADD. They are grown and successful. The oldest, 29 owns his own multimillion dollar company. The second, 27 is in a successful band after developing musical skills to enhance his self image Diesel Dawgs will be releasing a CD soon!) and the third, 25 is devoting himself to God. The 3rd one went through some tough times, the law and drugs.
Avatar f tn To get an ADHD diagnosis, you have to show the symptoms in two different places. So I tend to doubt that he would qualify. Also 6 year old boys can be very active. Especially when they have been stuck in school for many hours. They just need to get it out of their system. The best thing for him and you is to find something very active that he can do after school. If he can burn up that energy, he will be very different at home.
1294567 tn?1272390695 Increased blood pressure and heart rate, anxiety, and insomnia are a few of the many side effects of the drugs prescribed for ADHD. These can also be amplified in people that do not have ADHD but still take the drugs. People are not aware of the many side effects of these drugs, which is why I think a solution needs to be found to stop the exponential growth of cases, which lead to drug abuse because of more availability of the drugs.
