Common Questions and Answers about Adhd symptoms boys

Avatar n tn Dear Renee, Generally, pediatric mental health clinicians prefer to wait until the age of seven or so to diagnose ADHD, because so many of the symptoms (inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity) of ADHD are typical of the behavior of yopung (particularly pre-school) children. Having said this, it does happen that ADHD is diagnosed in pre-school children, and medication is sometimes prescribed in these circumstances.
Avatar f tn The scores on his 2nd grade achievement test places his intellectual ability at mid year 3rd grade. DO my son have symptoms of ADD-ADHD. Should I retain my son in the second grade to improve on the weakness stated by his teacher.
5856747 tn?1403352282 ADHD is diagnosed on the bases of the child’s behaviour alone. This may be done using the International Classification of Diseases or ICD-10. There are no other tests to confirm the diagnosis and this again may cause difficulty in accepting ADHD as a disorder. Features of ADHD behaviour will include: • Inattention to instructions. • Inability to learn or retain. • Inability to stay with a specific task or to complete it. • Inability to hold attention to what is being said to them.

Avatar f tn i would like anybody who has a 9 year old son or daughter to tell me what are the symptoms of ADHD before i take my nephew to a pdoc...........
Avatar f tn That doesn't mean that is wrong, just that it may not explain all of a child's symptoms. My boys were diagnosed ADHD and then, a few years later, OCD was tacked on to one and ODD to the other. Do the "silent seizures" have any effects on your grandson's brain? What medications has he already tried?
Avatar n tn I have also read a book on ADHD and they both have 15-16 out of 20 of the symptoms along with the sensory problems too. They have no respect for theyre own things as well as others. Heres a few things that I marked in the book.
Avatar f tn Hi, answered your post about your daughter and figured I should do the same for you. My first thought is that you certainly have some of the symptoms of ADHD or ADD. And, of course, if you have it (or your husband) - it dramatically increases the chances that your daughter could also have it. You are probably fairly intelligent or it would have/should have been picked up in school. Although girls, especially girls with ADD, don't get noticed as easily as all of those bouncy boys.
1453183 tn?1287852619 In an ideal world, doctors and therapists would examine all facets of the child's life. But if one-tenth of all boys age 10 are diagnosed as ADHD obviously this is far from an ideal world and a great many of our children are seriously harmed. Given those statistics I would be very wary of such a diagnosis. Those medications can have serious side effects, many of which the child cannot recover from. And, let's face it, there are medical fads. No more prefrontal lobotomies - right?
Avatar m tn It certainly is worth your time to check out SIDS. You also asked about ADHD and here is a pretty good site (with symptoms) for that. Both this site and the one mentioned by specialmom have lists that can be printed out. Perhaps if you fiance looked at these it would be helpful? I should also add that a least part of what he is doing is kind of normal for 5 year old boys.
Avatar f tn My 15 year old grandson has been on ADHD meds for years. As he is getting older other symptoms are evident. He is exhibiting anxiety, OCD behaviors. He is on Focalin and Paxil was added and recently increased. Now he is exhibiting some bizarre behaviors--his social interactions are poor at best, he is saying wierd things like, "someone has broke in our house and look here is a bag with my watch, underwear, and 20 questions game they planned on stealing".
Avatar f tn It's interfering with school work now and really bugging me. I checked out a list of ADHD symptoms from this website and found many that I could relate to.
Avatar n tn You will survive and so will your children. Out of 4 children I had 2 boys that were ADHD and 1 with ADD. They are grown and successful. The oldest, 29 owns his own multimillion dollar company. The second, 27 is in a successful band after developing musical skills to enhance his self image Diesel Dawgs will be releasing a CD soon!) and the third, 25 is devoting himself to God. The 3rd one went through some tough times, the law and drugs.
927672 tn?1244153247 Ever sins i know her she wanted to be friends with whomever she met. In kindergarten she always kissed boys until children started to complain. She is also lying about everything, breaking everything . whatever we tell her not to do, that is just what she is gone to do. when she gets punished for it she gets mean and blames everything on us. she breaks clothing on purposes, toys, furniture, spit in her room on the carpet and on furniture.
Avatar n tn Inattention, Hyperactivity and Impulsivity. It might be that the psychologist was struck by your son's level of impulsivity and on that basis thought that a trial on medication might be useful. It does not sound like the behavior is symptomatic of mood disorder. It would not be at all surprising if the major psychological characteristic of your son is his impulse-ridden personality. Systematic plans for behavior management, such as you described, are highly recommended for such children.
Avatar n tn Significantly lower levels of two omega-6 fatty acids and one omega-3 fatty acid (DHA) were found in the subjects with ADHD symptoms. In a 1995 study comparing plasma essential fatty acid levels in 53 boys with ADHD to a control group of 43 boys without ADHD, researchers found significantly lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids. In the April - May 1996 issue of Physiology & Behavior, Laura J.
Avatar n tn Our 8 yr old son was recently diagnosed with ADHD. His last 3 teachers had thought he had it because of his inability to focus and he was not where he should be academically. He is also very hyper. So we took him to the doctor and he was prescribed medication. He has tried 3 different types of meds now. We've also taken him to counseling because of his odd behavior.
Avatar n tn This should help control it until he is at least school aged. I do understand though. My twin boys should ADHD signs from the time they were about 2 or 3 also, but the doctor and I didn't have it diagnosed or treated with medicine until they went to school and the teachers notice a big problem there as well. I think in order to be diagnosed the issues have to be in two or three different areas of the child's life. Such as home, school, public places, ect.
1883398 tn?1320768071 She doesn’t do these things intentionally or to be bad, she is very loving, loves to cuddle, and is always apologizing for her actions later without my even mentioning it. I do not doubt she has the signs and symptoms of ADHD due to her EXTREME hyperactivity. She also has a very nasal voice that family members have pointed out to me (of course I know, I am just used to it.) There is a family history or Tourrets.
Avatar f tn There are certainly a lot of ADHD symptoms and also things that a intelligent child working the system might do. I also always wonder about something like sensory integration disorder. Does he have any normal things that he dislikes or gets really upset about? textures, food, light, sound, etc.? Reason why is that sensory is not dealt with by medication. Here is a site about sensory -
Avatar f tn I am in the process of being evaluated for ADHD. I am 68. Are there special considerations for senior citizens with this diagnosis. I also take meds for depression. Starting back on effexor xr from welbutrin.
Avatar n tn I had a friend who was very into natural things and both her boys had ADHD. She didn't want to put them on medication so she gave them Flax Seed Oil every day and swears she saw a difference in them when they were consitantly on it. It does take awile to kick in though, I think, probably at least 6 weeks of taking it every day. Maybe longer. You don't have to take it straight. You can mix it in a smoothie or other foods.
Avatar f tn Hello, the key to determining if a young child has ADHD is to determine to what degree his symptoms are occurring across settings, and how much his behavior differs from that of other boys his age. Much of what you describe is common unwanted behavior in a boy his age, though it is clear that he needs to learn new skills to follow rules and keep himself safe.
Avatar f tn Well anyway here are the list of bipolar symptoms for children. The symptoms in adults are different.
Avatar f tn my partner and myself recently took our 7 and half year old daughter to see some doctor to be tested for adhd. My eldest son is 18 and was diagnosed at age 9. he wasn't showing any signs at school until just over age of 9 but was unbearable at home and when out shopping or at my friends homes. i have been told by this doc that it always comes out in school before the age of seven which much be untrue as it wasn't with my son.
Avatar n tn My 4 year old nephew was going to be diagnosed with ADHD - exhibiting some very characteristic symptoms - but it turned out that too much SUGAR in his diet was the problem (not to mention a lot of problems within the home financially). It all adds up. So, definitely keep an eye on things. A number of things need to be in place for it to really be ADHD. Best thing would be talk with your son's doctor and have a complete physical and medical evaluation completed.
Avatar m tn I am wondering if that complete inappropriate behavior and lack of modesty may be associated with some ADHD symptoms considering he already shows these symptoms in other every day activity. Please give me feedback and don't be shy i can use all the help i can get!!
Avatar m tn We enroll him in a mainstream pre school program with Autistic, ADHD, and run of the mill four year olds. Now for the past 6 months he's learning, asking questions, tracing, and doing a lot of what he had problems with. However, he is very energetic and always trying to get attention. Whenever he does somthing wrong, we try to ignore him, you can see him looking for our response.
