My concern is that i see conflicting things about the safety of acyclovir while pregnant on the internet, some sites say its safe others say it's not approved by FDA to use while pregnant and so should be avoided. But why would doctors, including my own, offer it (or Valtrex) as an option if it's not safe? Oh, also, what is the usually dosage amount that is considered safe while pregnant? I've seen 400mg 3x a day, but not sure if this amount is ok while pregnant?
Hey all, so I had a cold sore pop up today, they are normal occurence for me every few months. I have had yet to have while pregnant but now sure enough here it is. I am 16w 1d and I am debating on if my normal routine to rid myself of them is safe while pregnant. I would usually apply my Acyclovir ointment a few times a day to the cold sore and take two pills of Lysine, one in the morning and one at night and usually in a day or two it would be gone.
t want to take acyclovir regularly but would love some advice on how to take it for this 10 day vacation/ doseage etc. THANKS IN ADVANCE!
I stopped taking acyclovir in December 2011. I have had numerous outbreaks like once a month or every couple of months. I have had HSV2 four years and four months now. My last outbreak was maybe eight weeks ago. Shouldn't my outbreaks decrease since I have had the virus for some time.I would like to know is that too many outbreaks to be experiencing.
acyclovir is 400mg 2x/day every single day. she will still get recurrences while on daily suppressive therapy regardless of if she's on acyclovir or valtrex, you just take acyclovir more often than you do valtrex.
Also, I am currently on suppressive therapy with acyclovir. Would this medication cause genetic defect in my sperm? Thank you !!
How effective is acyclovir as daily suppression therapy for Hsv-2? How must it be taken to cut down on viral shedding?
I was given Acyclovir dosed at 400mg taken 3 times a day for 5 days. After I finished my first dose of Acyclovir I went to speak with my primary Dr about being put on a daily suppressive thearpy. He prescribed me Acyclovir again, but dosed at 800mg taken twice daily. I felt that this may have been too high and had been taking it only once a day since everything I had read on Acyclovir supression was informing me that 400mg twice a day was sufficient for daily supressive thearpy.
I've been hsv2 positive for almost a year, also 5 months pregnant.. What's the odds of passing it to the baby.
Is there any other treatment for recurrent herpes besides acyclovir and valtrex? I have never taken valtrex but have read that they are the same thing. I feel so bloated, tired and dizzy while on acyclovir. My dr said we could try valtrex...but if it's the same, what's the point? Any other people with similar side effects that found solutions?
It's too late for a leision culture but go back because it should've cleared up by now, not continue to keep having recurrences like this back to back even while on acyclovir. Odds are that it's not oral herpes going on after all.
you can breast feed your child while on suppressive therapy. it's a non-issue. they get far less active acyclovir while breast feeding than they do if we gave them IV acyclovir to treat infection. Both la leche league and the american academy of pediatrics have ok'd it.
if you are going to bother to take suppressive therapy during pregnancy, make sure it is the 500mg twice a day dose. you need the higher doses during pregnancy because of the natural immunosuppression of the body.

actually the majority of herpes eye infections aren't from folks transmitting the virus from their mouth to their eyes - it's from the virus naturally following the nerve pathways up and causing symptoms in the eyes. It's typically nothing that anyone does - it's just the virus doing its thing.
No, not treating oral herpes is not going to cause it to spread to your brain and cause either meningitis or encephalitis. You have a well established infection.
Hi All, this is my first post. I had been taking acyclovir successfully for the past six years, for outbreaks about two to three times per year. With all the stress in my life these days, my outbreaks have become much more frequent and for whatever reason, I am now having some unpleasant side effects from acyclovir, like headache (tolerable), weird taste in my mouth and excess salivation, and a heavy feeling in my legs and arms.
i started taking acyclovir a few days ago for the first time for a mild cold sore breakout. 2 days after i started, the cold sores got more intense, and 2 new huge cold sores came up out of nowhere. i have 3 more days left of the medication, and i'm going to keep taking it, but what should i do? these cold sores are not going away, and it seems like its getting worse! so done with these friggin things...
Like most I cannot afford Valtrex any more. I have switched to Acyclovir. I've used it effectively for the couple of outbreaks but it seems to be taking considerably longer. I am taking L-Lysene as a suppressor and only take the Acyclovir at the first sign of an outbreak. I was taking 1000mg Valtrex at onset and then 500mg twice a day and everything was clear in 3 days. To get the same effectiveness from Acyclovir how much should I be taking daily during out breaks?
