Acyclovir while breastfeeding

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir while breastfeeding

famvir

Avatar n tn you can breast feed your child while on suppressive therapy. it's a non-issue. they get far less active acyclovir while breast feeding than they do if we gave them IV acyclovir to treat infection. Both la leche league and the american academy of pediatrics have ok'd it. if you are going to bother to take suppressive therapy during pregnancy, make sure it is the 500mg twice a day dose. you need the higher doses during pregnancy because of the natural immunosuppression of the body.
Avatar f tn My concern is that i see conflicting things about the safety of acyclovir while pregnant on the internet, some sites say its safe others say it's not approved by FDA to use while pregnant and so should be avoided. But why would doctors, including my own, offer it (or Valtrex) as an option if it's not safe? Oh, also, what is the usually dosage amount that is considered safe while pregnant? I've seen 400mg 3x a day, but not sure if this amount is ok while pregnant?
Avatar f tn Hi Grace I did go see a neurologist and he said I had post herpetic neuralgia from taking the meds, which is also why I stopped. Should I consider Acyclovir? How long can you take Acyclovir before it impacts my liver? From your experience would my body ever adjust without meds?
Avatar f tn t want to take acyclovir regularly but would love some advice on how to take it for this 10 day vacation/ doseage etc. THANKS IN ADVANCE!
408496 tn?1269603350 If you are having a period while you are breastfeeding then you can TTC as usual. I was breastfeeding and had two very light period didn't think much of them and got pregnant again. My two youngest will be 14 months apart!
Avatar f tn I stopped taking acyclovir in December 2011. I have had numerous outbreaks like once a month or every couple of months. I have had HSV2 four years and four months now. My last outbreak was maybe eight weeks ago. Shouldn't my outbreaks decrease since I have had the virus for some time.I would like to know is that too many outbreaks to be experiencing.
Avatar f tn I just talked to my midwife about breastfeeding while pregnant this morning and she said it is perfectly fine. She said people who don't know the facts think you need to stop, but that is not true. Personally I am breastfeeding my 22 month old and I am 14 weeks pregnant. If she doesn't self wean I'll be tandem nursing them in March! Good for you to be educating yourself and not just doing what others say. You are being a fantastic Mom and meeting the needs of both babies!
3930380 tn?1357887113 You can definitely get pregnant while breastfeeding. It being a birth control is a common misconception. However I have had very unregular periods after having kiddos. And before mine were always clock work.

561393 tn?1320962815 typically it is just fine for you to continue breastfeeding while pregnant, you may need to take extra vitamins and up you calorie intake even more than a typical pregnant women, so you can provide for both. since you do have history of MC I would definitely talk with your Dr as he or she may want to keep a close eye on your iron levels and any other levels that maybe effected by breastfeeding!
Avatar n tn I found a lump on my right breast while breastfeeding my 8 months old baby. I went for a mammogram and the doctor told me to stop breastfeeding in order to do the biopsy. I breastfed all my babies and having problem giving the bottle to the baby. If I can, I never wants to give a formula to my baby. On top of that she is allergic to milk and soy . Any advice? Thanks.
Avatar m tn Hi, I am guilt ridden with the fact that I caused my poor son to get HSV in his toe. He contracted the virus from me when he was almost 12 months old - I had clipped a nail on his big toe a bit too short and shortly after put his foot on my mouth while I was breastfeeding him. Although I didn't have outbreak at the time, I am assuming he got it from me because I do in fact get cold sores. When he first broke out (an awful sight) I had his toe cultured and it did in fact come back positive.
1209036 tn?1299178657 To answer your question, YES it is perfectly safe to go on birth control pills while breastfeeding, HOWEVER, you can not take pills that contain estrogen. There are pills call "mini-pills" or "pops" (progesterone only pills) such as camilla and micronor that are considered safe during breastfeeding. Ask your doctor about it. Some docs will give you a script straight out of the hospital, others will make you wait until you have your 6 week post partum check up.
Avatar n tn I also get migraines literally every day, and I too have had multi-day relief from my migraines while on, and for a short time after stopping, Acyclovir. I am going to test taking Acyclovir again to see whether it affects my migraines and will post here when I have results.
997993 tn?1290751148 But not all women can become pregnant while breastfeeding. Some can with no problem, but not all. I did extensive research on this a while back because I wanted to get pregnant again. Anyway, for some women it is easy to do without any problems. Some women have too low hormone levels to sustain a pregnancy. I know that is the case for me. I have timed things right for the past 3 months and not gotten pregnant. I know my body very well, as I have tempt my BBT.

Avatar f tn I am trying to ease my mind and figure out how common it is to miss your period after having your period while breastfeeding an infant. I am breastfeeding a 4 month old, I had a period when she was 2 months and 3 months but now I'm a week late. I have taken 3 pts so far and all negative. how big are the chances that I'm pregnant again? I did start exercising over the last month, and I also starting pumping to stock up on breastmilk. Could that cause me to miss my period this month?
Avatar m tn acyclovir is 400mg 2x/day every single day. she will still get recurrences while on daily suppressive therapy regardless of if she's on acyclovir or valtrex, you just take acyclovir more often than you do valtrex.
192291 tn?1345400135 it works sometime but not good enough to rely only on that.
Avatar f tn How effective is acyclovir as daily suppression therapy for Hsv-2? How must it be taken to cut down on viral shedding?
Avatar m tn I was given Acyclovir dosed at 400mg taken 3 times a day for 5 days. After I finished my first dose of Acyclovir I went to speak with my primary Dr about being put on a daily suppressive thearpy. He prescribed me Acyclovir again, but dosed at 800mg taken twice daily. I felt that this may have been too high and had been taking it only once a day since everything I had read on Acyclovir supression was informing me that 400mg twice a day was sufficient for daily supressive thearpy.
Avatar f tn What are your recommendations? What are my risks? Also, I am planning on breastfeeding, so how would taking Valtrex affect the baby? Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response.
