Acyclovir vs valtrex for cold sores

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir vs valtrex for cold sores

zovirax

Avatar m tn At first I was getting cold sores about every 4 to 6 weeks. I then started taking 500 mg of Valtrex daily for suppression therapy. This seemed to reduce the frequency of my outbreaks to about once every 2 to 3 months. To save money, my insurance switched me to acyclovir (400 mg twice a day) with similar results as the Valtrex. Then starting about 3 months ago, I began to have outbreaks every two weeks even with the suppression therapy.
Avatar f tn Zovirax ointment doesn't do a lot for cold sores anyways and it's incredibly overpriced unless you have good insurance. At this point - if your child's doctor is unconcerned, ask for a consult to a pediatric dermatologist. Confirm that indeed this is hsv1 related - 6 recurrences in 2 months is incredibly high even for oral herpes so it needs a further evaluation to make sure that it really is herpes going on.
Avatar f tn I have had horrible cold sores for 14 years. B4 that, nothing. My initial outbreak was on my nose. Huge blister massive facial swelling that led to hospitalization for a month and diagnosed with herpes encephalitis. Since then only massive blisters, size of a plum. Cannot see shape of nose. When out brake frms on my lip it's so large it swells to the bottom of my chin. B4 I would have an out brake once a year, now it's almost every month.
Avatar f tn However, it is well documented that valtrex and acyclovir perform very similarly. Valtrex is actually converted into acyclovir by the liver, so essentially, the two drugs act the same way in the body to suppress the virus. If acyclovir improves your quality of life, I would stick with it and explain the similarities to your partner - they are well documented and I expect you can find information in scholarly journals that supports the suppressive activity of acyclovir.
Avatar f tn I've had cold sores almost my whole pregnancy my doctor prescribed me valtrex and it helps somewhat but I also use abriva.
644816 tn?1224537250 You can treat ob's for $4 with acyclovir from walmart if you live in the US. Suppressive therapy from there is about $15/month. The only lysine dose that showed any effects at all was 1gm 3x/day which is more of a hassle to take than 2x/day, is more expensive and hasn't been shown to have any effect on overall viral shedding. No dose of lysine was shown to speed healing when just taken during ob's.
Avatar f tn Cold urticaria and cold sores are totally different things. As you know, cold urticaria is caused by a reaction to cold exposure, but cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex type 1 (hsv1) virus. Hsv1 can be triggered by lots of things, including other illnesses and cold. So while they aren't related, they might be triggered by the same things.
Avatar n tn Will treatment for hypothyroidism suppress my cold sores at all? to be cold sore free for even a week seems like an impossibe wish at the moment. My boyfriend and I can't kiss, I can't eat chocolate, I can't drink, I can't kiss my family & haven't been able to do any of these things for over a year now..I feel like I've been delivered a life sentence..can anyone help?
Avatar f tn It's possible. Some outbreaks leave me more tired and achy than others do, but more so if I was already stressed or tired before. In any case, you'll know in a couple of days whether or not you have something else going on, like a cold or another illness. In time, you'll also know what's normal for you with hsv1. There are some things that are expected with herpes, oral or genital, and some things that vary from person to person.
Avatar f tn you can use any of the herpes antivirals - acyclovir, valtrex or famvir.
Avatar f tn Or I can also take Aciclovir 5 times a day for 5 days. I highly recommend speaking to a Dr before taking Valtrex daily or ask for a second opinion.
Avatar f tn give the doc a call and ask for a prescription for herpes antivirals to keep on hand for future cold sores. she can use either 1 day famvir, 1 day valtrex or 2 day acyclovir to treat cold sores. acyclovir is the cheapest option - 800mg 3x/day for 2 days.
Avatar n tn My ex BF clearly lied about the Cialis. Is he lying about the Acyclovir? Do DRs regularly prescribe Acyclovir for just cold sores on the mouth? He gets angry whenever I try to talk to him about it and we are not speaking at the moment. Why be angry about this unless he is lying? I am just so upset about all of it but he is denying HPV 2 and angered at me for questioning him.
Avatar f tn I wanted to know what you guys used for hsv-1 (cold sores), as of now I take L-Lysine and from what I've heard is supposed to minimize the OB's. regardless it would be nice to know what products can be used to minimize OB's, heal faster or reduce the time frame that they last. Thanks!!
Avatar m tn 1) I have the beginnings of a cold sore on the lip. For Valacyclovir and Valtrex the recommended dosage is 2000mg every 12 hours...total of 4000mg in 24 hours. I have 2000mg of Valtrex and 2000mg Valacyclovir from prior outbreaks. Can I take them together for the some effect? Or do I need to take the 4000mg total dose with the same drug? 2) I am getting cold sores on the lip up to 3 times a year. There is no common catalyst. Each outbreak if not treated early is as severe as all the rest.
Avatar m tn acyclovir needs to be taken twice a day for suppressive therapy.
Avatar n tn Daily suppressive therapy helps to prevent cold sores before they get a chance to show up. You can use valtrex, acyclovir or famvir for it. Give your doctor a call and ask about it if you are interested.
Avatar m tn Talk to your provider about having herpes antivirals on hand to treat cold sores at the very first sign of a tingle of getting one . Valtrex and famvir are 1 day treatments and acyclovir is 2 days. Easier and more effective and potentially even cheaper ( acyclovir is $4 at walmart for 30 200mg pills with a prescription ). has your partner been tested to know her own status? until the skin has returned to normal, there is still a chance of the virus being active.
Avatar m tn Yes, the Acyclovir and Valtrex are for Herpes. Period. Both medicines are used to treat HSV1 and HSV2, so just because she has these medicines does not absolutely mean she has HSV2. But if she does have HSV2, then as for you not contracting it, consider yourself very very very very very lucky. And remember this, if she does have HSV2..don't get too mad about it..consider yourself foturnate that you didn't catch it.....
Avatar f tn After initial outbreak, I was prescribed Valtrex to use for a recurrence. Very bad headaches resulted. Was discontinued. With next occurrence, I asked for another anti-viral and was prescribed Acyclovir. This one caused headaches, backache, confusion and fatigue. Was stopped. I am now having a recurrence and didn't take anything. After about 7 days, I felt it was almost over, then wham....came back with a new leison and flu-like symptoms.
Avatar f tn Does anyone have a better rem. For cold sores. Had one at around 8 weeks for 3-5 weeks. Can't get anything to work. Now at 20 weeks and its taking off again. Soc ordered abreva, tired most everything I use prior to pregnancy. Nada.
Avatar n tn Greatly simplified that means that you swallow valtrex and your body turns it into acyclovir. Because of this unique delivery system you get more active acyclovir into your body with valtrex than you do with regular ole acyclovir ( 55% vs 15% ). Because it packs a bigger punch at one time - you don't have to take it as often. Otherwise it's the same medication as good ole el cheapo acyclovir. We have info on acyclovir being taken suppresively non-stop for over 20 years now by folks.
