Avatar m tn i started taking acyclovir a few days ago for the first time for a mild cold sore breakout. 2 days after i started, the cold sores got more intense, and 2 new huge cold sores came up out of nowhere. i have 3 more days left of the medication, and i'm going to keep taking it, but what should i do? these cold sores are not going away, and it seems like its getting worse! so done with these friggin things...
Avatar f tn if you have a prescription from your provider, you can get a round of acyclovir for $4 at walmart to treat ob's when they occur. If it's been more than 72 hours though since your recurrence started, not much bang from your buck to be had from antivirals at this point. you can try something as simple as soaking in the bathtub with epsom salts thrown in for comfort. dermoplast spray ( the blue can for the genital area, not the red can ), is also helpful for pain relief.
Avatar f tn I would usually apply my Acyclovir ointment a few times a day to the cold sore and take two pills of Lysine, one in the morning and one at night and usually in a day or two it would be gone. I just wasn't sure if using these two things was safe while pregnant. I will be calling my doctor tomorrow to ask but I would love anyones opinion on anyone who has used these products while pregnant. Thank you!
Avatar m tn My boyfriend and I are planning to go further into the relationship, and however I would like to do the most that I can to prevent him of getting the virus from me. I have stand-by pills of acyclovir with me for around 5 outbreaks that I can remember. Could you advise help to advise on how much of the dosage that I will need to take for suppressive treatment, and how long will it take to start to be effective? Thanks in advance for the help.
Avatar f tn I've just been diagnosed with hsv2 and I am taking acyclovir.....I'm undecided if I should continue taking it daily or wait and see if I am prone type to get recurrences often. Ive heard some people get it so mild they dont take daily meds. Since I had it and didnt know does that mean I may not have many recurrences?
Avatar f tn Is there any other treatment for recurrent herpes besides acyclovir and valtrex? I have never taken valtrex but have read that they are the same thing. I feel so bloated, tired and dizzy while on acyclovir. My dr said we could try valtrex...but if it's the same, what's the point? Any other people with similar side effects that found solutions?
Avatar m tn I was prescribed with valacyclovir 500mg twice a day for 5 days, by the third day the scabs where dry and I had no pain so the treatment worked. Just 4 days ago I started to feel itchiness on the same area and it was a few small blisters so the next day I started again the same treatment, the same dosage. The scabs stop growing or spreading and by now are dry. Its been only 2 months apart this second outbreak.
Avatar f tn Hi, I was diagnosed with Herpes after I had surgery in March this year, the first outbreak took 5 x5 day courses Acyclovir to go. After the first outbreak I had persistent 'bumps' that were continued to be treated with Acyclovir before I was told I also actually had a warts outbreak as well. The warts started rapidly spreading about 2months after the bumps appeared and after the first herpes outbreak.
Avatar n tn If you are having ob's every other month then definitely suppressive therapy with acyclovir is the best choice for you. Why have ob's so often if you don't have to? Also just treating each ob as they occur isn't very helpful - it helps that ob heal faster but it does nothing to reduce the number of ob's you are having. If you've never read anything about suppressive therapy - check out the herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com for more info on it.
Avatar m tn s the cost and means of getting the prescription itself that is the big hurdle to getting the Acyclovir treatment. Right now I'm unemployed so qualify for the county hospital program because of my low income, but if I get a job I'll be disqualified and most likely go back to having no acess to a doctor. Do you know of any other ways an uninsured person can get a doctor to write a prescription without having to pay $300 for an out of pocket office visit to get a prescription?
Avatar m tn virest is just a generic brand name for acyclovir. Acyclovir does not cure herpes. It impedes replication of the virus in the body but it still doesn't completely prevent shedding of the virus or stop ob's completely. It's a treatment, not a cure.
Avatar f tn Main problem: Vaginal itching of 4 weeks duration following Acyclovir treatment of a positive Herpes (HSV) culture test. Tests for UTI, Yeast, and other STD's are negative or within normal limits. History: Approximately 3 weeks following unprotected intercourse with a new partner, I developed an ulcerated lesion on my labia minora and another in the vestibule with no other symptoms.
Avatar m tn So I am thinking that continuing the Acyclovir treatment (which is a low risk treatment) should keep the viral reactivation in check for life thus eliminating the need for further treatment with steroids in future. Welcome your thoughts on this mode of treatment.
20830284 tn?1526838532 Pretty sure I will be diagnosed with MS at my next Dr.'s Appt. I take Acyclovir when I start to get an outbreak of cold sores. I feel I'm having an MS episode now and I am wondering if taking it would help or hurt?
Avatar n tn I was originally prescribed 400 mg of acyclovir twice daily for suppression of my herpes type 2. Recently, I asked my doctor to increase my dosage to 800 mg of acyclovir twice daily. Is there any negatives associated with taking a higher dose than what is normally prescribed for suppression. Also, are there any benefits to taking a higher dose regularly for suppression like less shedding?
Avatar f tn The reported side effects of acyclovir include hallucinations, psychosis, lethargy, mood changes, and confusion. However, most of these occur in much higher doses than yours. Also, I stress "reported"; cause and effect is unclear. The specific words you use -- mood change, irritability, and depression (which is what your sympoms, as a group, suggest -- as you probably know) have not been described, but I suppose it is possible.
Avatar n tn Hi there, In November 2008, my boyfriend kissed me when he had a visible coldsore on his lip. 24 hours later I had one come up on my lip, but with it came 3 blisters in my mouth (on my tongue & gums). From the day I caught these cold sores, I've hardly had a single day without them. They are rarely on the outside of my mouth though, but always on the inside.
Avatar m tn I am on 500mg daily suppressive treatment for HSV-2. Had it since 2007 and been taking daily meds for about 12-18 months. Don't get any symptoms or outbreaks. My question is, can I cut each tablet in half and have the equivalent of 250mg everyday? Is that how tablets generally work? i.e. half the tablet halves the active component? If that works then a 6 month script will last a year and I'm not taking as much medication over the same time period.
Avatar n tn Hello, I have genital herpes and I just had an outbreak two weeks ago, I took Zovirax as always, 200mg 5 times a day for 5 days... I finished the treatment and one week after (now) got another outbreak and it is worse...is that possible? isnt it supposed to suppress it? I live in europe and they do not have the valtrex suppressive therapy, do you know if i can take another supressive therapy?? should I take now another zovirax treatment even though i finished one 2 weeks ago??
Avatar f tn I am 3 months pregnant.. Now I had chicken pox so Doctor advised to take acyclovir 200 mg , 3 times... Anyone knows about it..
Avatar m tn You can read more about treatment, and genital herpes in general, in the Herpes Handbook, here: http://www.westoverheights.com/genital_herpes/handbook/view_the_chapters.html Here are the dosages for Valtrex: Recurrent outbreaks: 500 mg twice a day for three days. Suppression: 1000 mg once a day for people who have 10 or more outbreaks per year. 500 mg once a day for people who have 9 or fewer outbreaks per year. It is taken every day.
1654177 tn?1319838494 Well, my doctor is out of town, I have a small outbreak. i usually take Acyclovir for this problem. My doctor says it should be ok to take while on TX. It's an antiviral for herpes. Has anyone else taken it?
Avatar m tn 1st ob was bad, ulcers on foreskin for 3 weeks plus not healing until I was diagnosed and started on acyclovir, which then took care of it by 1 week of treatment 3 months ago, I've started on methotrexate to treat my sarcoidosis and about 2 month into treatment, Ob started as I noticed an ulcer at the inner part of my pee hole(urethra) I started acyclovir around day 4-5 post ob and now it's been 5 weeks since it started and it's not healing..
Avatar f tn I don't wanna keep calling my doctor for every little thing. I've been on Acyclovir 400mg for about 10 days now. Had to take 2 a day for the first week and now down to 1 a day. I'm currenty 28 weeks pregnant. The pain down there has went down and I can finally wipe and pee without pain. I'm just a bit itchy down there and around my butthole (sorry tmi). I only get the occational sharp shooting pain that will last a few moments and feels like I am being ripped up down there.
