I was originally prescribed 400 mg of acyclovir twice daily for suppression of my herpes type 2. Recently, I asked my doctor to increase my dosage to 800 mg of acyclovir twice daily. Is there any negatives associated with taking a higher dose than what is normally prescribed for suppression. Also, are there any benefits to taking a higher dose regularly for suppression like less shedding?
last Monday I finished the Acyclovir dosage the Dr recommended, I have still enough pills for another four days of treatment that she prescribed on purpose. During the week there was a significant improvement and i thought it was over, but yesterday started a small itch that got abit stronger today after a long day of work. shall I start the extra pills again just in case?

I have been taking 200 mg of Acyclovir a day for almost 20 years to suppress the herpes virus. Occasionally I have to take more for outbreaks. I have been told that my dosage is unusually low and for the pharmacy my dosage reads 400 mg a day. Otherwise some of the supplemental insurance plans with the pharmacy will not pick it up. I do not have regular insurance.
My question is about the fact that my new doctor has told me I must take liver enzyme tests to continue the use of this prescription.

Would this new outbreak be caused by me not taken the dosage first prescribed by my Dr or is it possible to still have an outbreak while on a daily supresser?
Just 4 days ago I started to feel itchiness on the same area and it was a few small blisters so the next day I started again the same treatment, the same dosage. The scabs stop growing or spreading and by now are dry. Its been only 2 months apart this second outbreak. The antiviral its really expensive but given the frecuency of the outbreaks should I go under supressive therapy? and if so, Whats the dossage and period of time i should do it?

Acyclovir costs about US $17 at Costco for a 3-month supply. Other pharmacies like Walgreen's also sell it really cheap. Use that instead. The only difference is you take it 2x a day instead of once daily. It works the same.
I havent had any outbreaks since being placed on the 800mg, but I am definitely observing and will definitely visit my GYN if one occurs while on this dosage. So there is no difference between acyclovir and valtrex? So they both pretty much have the same results as far as being effective?
According to my follow up visit with the nurse at my university who swabbed the leison, her exact words were "So, this is herpes but we can help you deal with it.
I plan on increasing my dosage to the recommended amount for late pregnancy. (just found out I am six weeks along a couple days ago). I am concerned though, what happens if I do get an outbreak and it is within a month or so of my due date? Does anyone have experience with this? Did you have a C-section? Hello, I am currently taking acyclovir 200 mg twice daily for suppressive therapy. However, I am on my menses and feel an outbreak coming. I was instructed to taking it 5 times a day for OBs. I am advised now to increase acyclovir dosage to 3 times a day and have levamisole hydrochloride 75 gms twice a week for another 3 months and check for HSV1 igg again. Please let me know am I on the right path to control herpes, what is the increasing trend in hsv 1 igg signify. My sugar, liver and kidney have normal results now.

Today is day 23 since I first saw blisters. I spent 5 days on 400mg of acyclovir 3 times a day, 5 days on 800mg of acyclovir 5 times a day, 5 days on 1g Valtrex 3 times a day and 4 days on 1g Valtrex twice a day. Before increasing back to 3 times a day Saturday today is Monday I'm still on 1g Valtrex 3 times a day and I'm visiting Mt doctor again for a full checkup.
I'm really convinced all these symptoms are due to the hsv1, including the discharge.
Acyclovir, time and Ibuprofen have been the best healers, in my opinion, even with taking neurontin. If I lower my dosage of Acyclovir below 600mg/day, the symptoms (right arm pain and blisters) begin again. My dermatologist told me I will probably have to take Acyclovir the rest of my life.
All of this began after opthomologist took me off of Acyclovir after nine years of daily Acyclovir (400mg) to prevent a recurrence of herpes iritis (eye disease).
I decided to take acyclovir tablets. The dosage is recommended to be 400mg 2 times a day. By the double dosage you suggested in a previous post, do you mean 800mg 2 times a day?
