Avatar f tn //www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/pdf/10.1086/342966?cookieSet=1 is the link to it for reading. I myself have been on acyclovir more than I haven't for the 22 years that I"ve had hsv2. I did switch to valtrex for about a year at one point but ended up going back to acyclovir for multiple reasons. The only times I stopped suppressive therapy once I started it were because of pregnancy and for 6 months I was off while I participated in a research study.
Avatar n tn I am currently in a long term relationship, fully disclosed sexual history - but I am resisting suppression therapy. In a previous relationship I tried this for a year and found the side effects to be horrible - confusion, anxiety, agitation, poor typing skills, eye-blinking and muscle flickering. I want to avoid passing the virus to my partner, but I cannot live a happy life with the side effects of Accyclovir.
Avatar f tn I have been on Acyclovir once a day 400mg as a preventative for outbreaks for almost 2 years now. It has significantly helped lessen the amount of outbreaks as well as the duration if I do get one. I had to recently switch doctors and this new doctor is not willing to prescribe it to me anymore stating that the FDA has linked Acyclovir to causing cancer after 1 year of use. I can't find anything on FDA website or Google linking long term effects causing cancer.
Avatar f tn postmarketing experience with valacyclovir provides evidence of favorable safety and efficacy in herpes simplex virus (HSV) management. Valacyclovir enhances acyclovir bioavailability compared with orally administered acyclovir. Long-term use of acyclovir for up to 10 years for HSV suppression is effective and well tolerated.

Avatar f tn BUT, I have to take it or I am in pain. So try not to worry so much about the long term effects when you are trying to survive today. If you are worried about this I would talk to my doctor and let them know what you are experiencing and there may be something they can do differently. Just dont stop any seizure med without a doctors help. Hope you feel better..
Avatar m tn I have no symptoms and feel great; I am 54 and wondering if HEP C would kill me or if the treatment could cause long term effects that could ruin my health. The longest living male in my family was my father 86 and had slow progressive dementia the last 10 years.
Avatar f tn Hi guys, I was recently diagnosed with Genital Hsv-2 and I've been taking acyclovir-400mg to suppress my outbreak symptoms.. I know you have to drink a lot of water with this particular medication or it can cause long-term problems with your kidneys. I've been trying to drink as much water as I can while taking the pills and the one time I did urinate it was the regular yellowish-color and I just so happened to go to the bathroom again and my urine is clear?
Avatar n tn There are no long term issues with using acyclovir. They have info on folks using it non-stop suppressively for over 20 years without any issues. 200mg 2x/day isn't going to do squat. You need to have it increased to the proper doses for it to do any good at all.
Avatar n tn We have info on over 25 years of acyclovir without any long term effects ( since valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug, same lack of issues but only 15 years of info on it which is still good ). how often do you see your partner? if it's once a month or more, might as well just take suppressive therapy every single day.
Avatar n tn Took acyclovir for a few years prophylactically as occurrences are 3-4 times per month. Went off meds (worry about long term effects) and just bore with it for a few years. Then recurrences became very frequent and it is the pain prior that is most difficult - I get severe pain in my head, and behind my eye. The pain is debilitating. I recently began taking Valtrex 500 and it has helped enormously but I have some questions.
Avatar m tn Is once or twice a day more or less effective, morning or night dosing or both. Are there long term health problems related to suppressive therapy? I have read extensive information on Immunovex and Acambis working on Vaccines of a preventative and therapeutic modality. They are utilizing different and emerging technologies than past attempts.
Avatar m tn dont be too scared as said above few people experience sides but one thing is for sure long term use for decades is not healthy and only cirrhosis or severe damaged liver can justify such use so i'd definitely combo with other therapies so that nucs can be used short term from latest easl conference we have now tests for sustained immune control of hbv cccdna equal or less than 5 copies/cell we now need an hbsag level equal to 5copies/cell, mybe hbsag 500iu/ml
Avatar n tn you been reading info from the 70's? no, you aren't going to get ribavirin to treat herpes. it also doesn't cure herpes. acyclovir works much better, much cheaper and has less side effects and long term risks.
Avatar f tn I'm more worried about the hair thinning right now. I've seen posts about people thinking their hair thinning is a result of the medication. The side effects I've found is a long list and hair thinning has been mentioned. I'm scared to death and beginning to panic about it.
Avatar m tn Are there any long term side effects from acyclovir use? I have read that hair loss is a side effect. Has anyone experienced this? Also I am confused about the whole genital hsv 1 thing. The doc told me this would not be a big deal and that Type 1 rarely recurs in the genital area. Is it possible that I am still experiencing the initial breakout or are these recurrances? Its only been 4 weeks. Any advice would be appreciated.
Avatar m tn But as we know taking steroids is not a long term solution due to its undesirable side effects (like IOP, glaucoma, etc). So I am thinking that continuing the Acyclovir treatment (which is a low risk treatment) should keep the viral reactivation in check for life thus eliminating the need for further treatment with steroids in future. Welcome your thoughts on this mode of treatment.
