However, herpes encephalitis is classically a pretty devastating disease acutely usually with fever, changes in thinking, headache, occasionally neck stiffness, extreme sleepiness/coma, weakness localized to certain area(s) of the body, and occasionally seizures.
Avatar n tn does recurrent hsv 2 infections also trigger radiculitis or sacral neuropathy or menigitis? what is the likelihood of developing hsv encephalitis or meningitis during recurrent attacks? is the neurologic manifestations exclusive only during the primary infection? does taking anti-virals (acyclovir, valacyclovir) decrease the neuropathic complications or no effect at all?
808425 tn?1371092328 My 43 year old brother has been in the hospital for a week. A month ago, I brought him into the ER with some concerning symptoms. He started experiencing auras. Taste, smell, light headed, confusion, incoherent, feeling displaced (or like he was not quite "there"). He was sent home after a ct scan that the doctors said was normal. They diagnosed him with anxiety. I argued with one of the doctors because I know my brother, and what he was exhibiting was absolutely not anxiety.
Avatar f tn Seems to me acyclovir wears off during the night v lasts longer... Had a previous prescription. No test for bacteria infection, but always gets this way. Very careful about keeping clean and not touching.
368646 tn?1208393887 If by chance this was caused by herpes simplex encephalitis (HES), could it still be detected in the CSF? Would Acyclovir help? Thanks for your reply!
Avatar f tn My husband has had a weird infection under his nail for years, it comes and goes. Swollen, gross rash, then normal for a while, then flare.
Avatar m tn My question is how in the world could no one have noticed the signs of encephalitis. He presented in almost a text book way. Showed all the symptons. Five different doctors found nothing wrong and then prescribed medicines that possible made his illness worse! Encephalitis is not a terribly rare disease. Why would they continue to run the sametests over and over again? Why did they do repeated CT scans and not an MRI?? Is it common to miss encephalits?
Avatar m tn I am 39 yo male. In early Jan, right after a high risk sexual encounter, I started feeling itching, stinging and burning mainly in the anogentital area. One month later I had several episodes of mild burning and pain on urination, and developed low grade fever (99.5~100.5F) everyday mostly in the afternoon, associated with fatigue and night sweating.
Avatar n tn She was treated for 14 days with acyclovir and dexamethasone for presumed viral encephalitis. One month later, her temperature had returned to normal, and her mental status and arm strength were normal, although a flaccid paraparesis persisted. One year later, she was able to walk with the aid of a walking frame and sphincter function had returned to normal.
Avatar n tn I am a survivor of herpes simplex encephalitis. This is a rare illness, something like 1 in 100,000 people get it each year. I had the chicken pox when I was a little girl which is a herpes virus. The herpes virus does not ever leave your body. Some people get cold sores or shingles. There is no vaccine (yet). Avatar m tn Hi there. Viral encephalitis is not contagious in most cases enteroviruses can be spread from person to person but mostly causes no symptoms at all or mild respiratory or diarrhoeal illness. Most cases are spread hand to hand or hand to mouth contact and frequent hand washing can reduce such infections. You could avoid contact with those who have infectious diseases causing meningitis. Herpes simplex virus type 2 and HIV are sexually transmitted.

Avatar f tn Receiving timely treatment is important because the course of the encephalitis is somewhat unpredictable. The best way to prevent viral encephalitis is to avoid the viruses that lead to this disease. Make sure you and your daughter are immunized against viruses that can cause encephalitis, such as chickenpox, measles, mumps and German measles. Check with your neurologist regularly to ensure that encephalitis do not recur and to manage these headaches and tremors.
Avatar m tn I had stabbing pain in my trigeminal nerve with a soar throat/neck ache/low grade fever followed by blisters on the side of my tongue. Tested neg for HSV1. A week ago had sever pain in the nerve in my leg. The next day i woke up with flu and a stiff neck, and a few hrs later had blisters on my neck, face, scalp & chest.
Avatar n tn Has anyone noticed that there is a shortage of Acyclovir in the US? I live on the East coast and have found that it is very hard to get my prescription re-filled. I take 400mg x2 a day for suppression and I have only been able to get 200mg. With some difficulty I might add. It isn't the end of the world but I am concerned about the supply in a month when I go for another re-fill. I read on the FDA web site that there is currently a shortage. http://www.fda.
Avatar n tn My question is why would I get blisters a second time in 2 weeks? Since it is a weekend, should I start the Acyclovir again, and can it do me any harm if I do? Being a weekend, I can't get in touch with the physician, and I now have 2 opposing medical opinions, from my physician to stop the Acyclovir, and one from the physician at the urgent care clinic on 8/26 to start the medication again. Thanks for your help.
Avatar n tn The severity of the out break has also increased significantly extremely painful nothing like before. The medication acyclovir doesn.t seem to be helping the out breaks are lasting about 2 weeks to resolve completely. Why is this happening? Is it age related?( i just turned 38) Can it be related to my diet? (transitioning to veganism)What kind of specialist or doctor can i consult?(my ob/gyn is clueless) the same thing is happening to my husband.
Avatar f tn I had La Crosse Encephalitis when I was 4 and I am now 40 and I get terrible headaches with sensitivity to light and stiff neck. I am curios to know if the headaches have anything to do with the encephalitis I had as a kid. I have also been diagnosed with HSV type 1 which comes and goes. Can this be an after effect of encephalitis? Thank you for any help you can give.
Avatar n tn My 8 year old daughter had encephalitis a little over a year ago. The tests for the cause such as a virus or bacteria all came back negative. The doctors assumed it was an unknown virus and sent us to two months of rehab - she had lost her short-term memory at this point. We kept seeing more and more of a decline in her mental status and I felt there was something still attacking her brain.
Avatar m tn He was on coma for 4 days and he was awake, he has no vision, cannot move and talk. And then he has difficulty in breathing and the doctors found out that there is a stenosis on his throat so they put tracheostomy. He cannot eat as well so doctors put PEG on him as well.
Avatar f tn I have a 9 week old puppy that might have hydro encephalitis. I went to my vet last week for vaccines and I asked about him because he has always been a bit off but the vet said everything seemed fine. Sunday he began vomitting and drooling a lot. His lip was kind of twitching and I thought he ate something that was making him sick. The emergancy vet said that he propably has water on his brain and that he was very nasty and aggressive.
Avatar n tn My husband had both meningitis and encephalitis in 2010. He spent about a year unable to work afterwards and has had serious problems since then dealing with sensory overload and an inability to tolerate crowds, loud noises, and changes to his routine. Within the normal parameters of his life, he functions quite well: He can work full time, drive a car, and hold normal conversation one on one. But he has damages to his brain that are hard to live with and can make him feel emasculated.
Avatar m tn You get much better relief from ob's by taking acyclovir 2x/day every single day. You can do this for under $20/month in the US even if you don't have insurance. Lysine doesn't help to heal ob's faster. It also doesn't suppress the virus. For acyclovir when you first start feeling an ob about to start, take either 400mg 3x/day for 5 days or 800mg 2x/day for 2 days. Both speed healing at the same rate.
Avatar f tn I stopped taking acyclovir in December 2011. I have had numerous outbreaks like once a month or every couple of months. I have had HSV2 four years and four months now. My last outbreak was maybe eight weeks ago. Shouldn't my outbreaks decrease since I have had the virus for some time.I would like to know is that too many outbreaks to be experiencing.
