Avatar m tn My boyfriend and I are planning to go further into the relationship, and however I would like to do the most that I can to prevent him of getting the virus from me. I have stand-by pills of acyclovir with me for around 5 outbreaks that I can remember. Could you advise help to advise on how much of the dosage that I will need to take for suppressive treatment, and how long will it take to start to be effective? Thanks in advance for the help.
Avatar f tn Thank you Grace..I have a a few more questions; I was on the 9th day of acyclovir when I did the blood test for HSV 1 & 2. Would that effect the result? Im confused that the test came back positive instead of false positive or negative? I told the nurse about my exposer date, why would they send me to the lab for a herpes blood test if it was to early ...
Avatar m tn There are 3 antivirals (oral medication) generally prescribed for treating HSV. These are Valtrex/valacyclovir, Famvir/famciclovir, and acyclovir. They require a doctor's prescription. There are also several topicals that you can get over the counter. Some of these are Abreva, Releev, and Dermoplast. In addition some people use natural remedies such as honey, which has been found to have antiviral properties.
Avatar n tn If a female is the recipient of oral sex on the day discomfort begins, later an ulcer develops (PCR tests neg for HSV, CMV, etc) but serum IgG test is positive (5) for HSV2, (Neg for HSV1 & HIV neg) what are the chances the partner could develop HSV2 orally? What is the latest that symptoms could appear? (Partner has swollen nodes on day 15, no mention of oral ulcers or sore throat.
Avatar n tn hello-i am a 28 year old female with hx of hsv-1 with frequent breakouts...just this year i've had 6 cold sores. I take oral valtrex if i feel the prodrome and this really helps shorten the duration. Recently, i became sexually involved with male partner, HSV-2 positive x 7 years, outbreak-free x 3 years and on daily suppressive therapy. We have had unprotected sex so I know I am at risk. My question is: Is there any benefit or harm in going on suppressive therapy myself.
Avatar m tn Today I did a blood test for hsv 1 and hsv2 before a doctor diagnosed the blısters as herpes but doctor examined me has given me zostex until the results come out. zostex is used for herpes zoster and as far as I know not related with genital herpes, he said it was also an untiviral for hsv ? is that true? should I use it till the results come out?
Avatar f tn How effective is acyclovir as daily suppression therapy for Hsv-2? How must it be taken to cut down on viral shedding?
Avatar m tn So i got tested about 4 weeks ago for Herpes. I got tested for HSV 1 and 2 both IgM and IgG. Everything was negative, except the HSV 1 IgM was positive, and Negative IgG, and the doc told me that i have a recent infection. Ive never had cold sores or anything, which means it could be an asymptomatic shedding. The doc told me to take Acyclovir 800 mg for 5 days. But then another doc and some articles says that IgM is not reliable. Does that mean that the test might showed me a false positive?
Avatar m tn Recenlty I was tested and came back postitve for HSV-2. My first outbreak which was a single blister turned ulcer and then healed over lasted about two weeks to fully close up and heal. I was given Acyclovir dosed at 400mg taken 3 times a day for 5 days. After I finished my first dose of Acyclovir I went to speak with my primary Dr about being put on a daily suppressive thearpy. He prescribed me Acyclovir again, but dosed at 800mg taken twice daily.
Avatar f tn I went to Mexico to get tested for stds (on june 1, 2012) because I had a genital wart and was not sure what it was at the time all tests were negative except for hpv and hsv 2. For hpv I had type 11 and for hsv 2 I had positive 1.3. Shortly after my doctor prescribed acyclovir 200mg 4x a day.
Avatar n tn I have recently found out that I have HSV-1 (IgG=41). Not sure if it was from past sexual encounters or even before that, but doesn't matter anymore. I've read somewhere online before that taking acyclovir or valacyclovir every day consistently might result in a negative HSV test. My questions are: 1. Does that work and is that recommended, if not, why? 2.
Avatar f tn Long-term use of acyclovir for up to 10 years for HSV suppression is effective and well tolerated. Acyclovir is also approved for use in children, is available in some countries over the counter in cream formulation for herpes labialis, and has been monitored in over 1000 pregnancies. Safety monitoring data from clinical trials of valacyclovir, involving over 3000 immunocompetent and immunocompromised persons receiving long-term therapy for HSV suppression, were analyzed.
Avatar m tn I've been getting cold sores for as long as I can remember. I have never been tested for HSV 1 but always assumed that's what it is. I used to only get 1 or 2 every year or two. But, recently they have been more and more frequent. I used the 200mg acyclovir at times when I felt I was getting an OB and it worked very well. Although, there have been times, once or twice, when it did not work and I experienced the worst OB's I've ever had.
Avatar n tn m a 28 year old female with genital HSV-2 determined by HerpeSelect (I am negative for HSV-1). I contracted HSV-2 either 19 months ago through a partner that tested false-negative, or in fall of 2004 during two protected encounters with one individual whose HSV status is unknown to me. However, I only began experiencing neuralgia approximately 12 months ago.
Avatar n tn I recently ended a relationship with a HSV-2+ woman who was treated with Valtrex (every day) since testing positive for HSV-2 approximately 2 years ago. She told me that she had never had a recurrence after starting the Valtrex. We did not use protection during the relationship, though I did take oral acyclovir (at least 400mg twice a day) throughout the entire time we were intimate (~ 50 encounters over 2 months).
Avatar f tn I am planning to take suppressive theraphy for HSV I and HSV II (Acyclovir for 3 times a day - 7 days a month - for 6 months). Will that suffice for this also?
Avatar f tn I have HSV-2 and I was wondering if a guy performed oral sex on me how likely it is for him to get the Herpes Virus. I take Acyclovir every day to prevent outbreaks. Thanks.
Avatar n tn I was given diflucan I think its called, the one dose pill and the acyclovir for anymore hsv outbreaks. I also began takikng ortho tricyclen lo at this time. Everything was fine until mid February when I started having the tingling feelings of an hsv outbreak so I started the acyclovir and it stopped without ulcering. The nect week I got another yeast infection and it went away after a monistat application.
Avatar n tn I have first outbreak of genital herpes in Nov 2010 but I could remember but not sure that I had a small open sore a week after last sexual relationship with the first boyfriend in May 2010. After the first outbreak in Nov 2010, I started taking acyclovir 400 mg 3 times per day for a week then 2 times a day off and on. I found out later that my second boyfriend had history of cold sore in the past but never been active fro over 6 years.
Avatar n tn Asymptomatic viral shedding in the mouth is less common in people with oral HSV-1 than for genital HSV-2. Most oral to genital HSV-1 transmission probably occurs during overt herpes outbreaks (cold sores). While it is possible she could acquire a gential HSV-1 infection on top of her genital HSV-2, that appears to be a rare occurrence. I wouldn't worry about it.
