Acyclovir and kidneys

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir and kidneys

famvir

Avatar f tn If you are looking to reduce transmission to partners, the only known ways to reduce that are to use antivirals (Valtrex, acyclovir, famvir) and condoms, along with avoiding sexual activity when you have any symptoms. If you are looking to reduce outbreaks, studies are mixed for this. Here's a very small study that showed promise - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3115841 Here's one that showed a reduction in recurrences, but not in healing time - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.
Avatar m tn hi i've tested positive for 1&2, i've only had oral outbreaks so far, i asked the doctor for acyclovir and he gave me a prescription for 800mg tablets and to take them 2x daily for a total dose of 1600mg everyday as supressive therapy. i'm concerned this is too high a dose? i thought it should be 400mg and take 2x daily for a total dose of 800mg? it was an ER doctor that gave it to me because i don't have health insurance and went to the county hospital.
Avatar n tn Actually it's because of the differences in how much of the active medication you get in your body at a time. When you take a 500mg valtrex tablet - you get about 55% of active acyclovir that actually survives the digestive process and is available to circulate thru your body and kick a little herpes butt when it finds it ( valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug which means you swallow valtrex but the body turns it into acyclovir ).
Avatar n tn herpes antivirals are not stressful on the liver or the kidneys. acyclovir has 25 years of non-stop suppressive therapy use behind it now that proves its safety.
Avatar m tn I'm male, 29y. My urine has recently (for about a week) became of a darker tone of yellow than usual, a bit brownish I'd say. I tried drinking a lot of water for a couple of days and it cleared up, but after I returned to my usual intake my pee got dark again. I searched the other symptoms for kidney issues (pain when urinating, getting tired, losing weight) and I don't have any of those.
Avatar f tn herpes doesn't "never go away" . even though you have hsv2, that doesn't mean that everything going on genitally is due to herpes. following up with the dermatologist if your gyn is stumped is a good idea. Many skin sensitivities that can occur and having the 2 of them work together, is often very helpful. Have you ever googled vulvodynia? how were you diagnosed as having hsv2? did you have a lesion culture done?
Avatar n tn Excessive doses may alter electrolyte imbalance in your body and it may produce renal failure. Your kidneys control your blood pressure, you dont want to end on Dialysis.
Avatar f tn t need to take them both and it can result in damage to your kidneys if you are taking too high of doses. The reason you take valtrex less often than acyclovir is because of increased bio-availability, not because it's that much longer lasting. I'd continue to follow up regularly with the dermatologist to try to figure out what is going on. Your initial infection with hsv1, though a not so common complication, isn't too unusual.
Avatar m tn Even now, since you are still forming new lesions, acyclovir should hasten healing. In addition, acyclovir and related drugs are very safe and are not a threat to your kidneys. these are some of the safest medicines we use. The matter of suppressive therapy is a personal choice in terms of how you react to the recurrences. Many people would like to have as few and as mild a recurrence as possible, others take a wait and see attitude.
Avatar f tn have you been to your gyn to get tested for yeast and bacterial infections vaginally? if not, that's the next step. BV especially has been shown to make herpes more active and about 1/2 of all women who have it, aren't having obvious symptoms to know that they have it which is why proper testing is important. bv is also more common once you go into menopause so it's well worth going to be checked for for that reason also.
Avatar f tn Hi guys, I was recently diagnosed with Genital Hsv-2 and I've been taking acyclovir-400mg to suppress my outbreak symptoms.. I know you have to drink a lot of water with this particular medication or it can cause long-term problems with your kidneys. I've been trying to drink as much water as I can while taking the pills and the one time I did urinate it was the regular yellowish-color and I just so happened to go to the bathroom again and my urine is clear?
Avatar m tn My daughter was diagnosed with Behcet's in 2008. Then in 2009 she contracted herpes (hsv2). She is now having an outbreak of herpes (starting to get under control after 2 rounds of valtrex, back on acyclovir for 2 days) and a flare of Behcet's. Prednisone will make the painful vaginal Behcet's lesions go away but will cause another outbreak of herpes. Does anyone have any suggestions? She's about to leave for a required college trip. Thanks.
Avatar f tn My doctor was referring to a study wehre Acyclovir slowed disease progression in HIV by reducing viral load. And so he thought Acyclovir might have a direct effect (even if it is low) on HIV. Maybe he thought that by decreasing viral load antybodies would show up later than in the absence of Acyclovir?
Avatar n tn Once and awhile I will get a migraine often accompanied with with a scalp breakout and I stop taking the Acyclovir and lysine until the pain goes away. Then I resume my acyclovir and lysine. I now rarely have any problems. But I always have to go a week once and a while without my Acyclovir and Lysine. Is the herpes virus simply one of my triggers or is the herpes virus the root cause off all my migraines, I don't know. The pain and breakouts are always hemispheric in nature.
Avatar n tn Few Lesions (pimple like with red base) come and go everywhere in my body (cheeks, forehead, ear pinna, eyelids, chest, arm, forearm...). I have took acyclovir only for 10 days in October and am suffering a couple of lesions coming up and clearing in few days every now and then. This is companied by random itching occurring in different parts of the body without visible lesions, I also felt some shooting pain for a few seconds (rarely) into my penis.
Avatar n tn Thanks for the quick response......Yes, HSV did show in bloodwork, so Neurologist ordered PICC Line and intravenous Acyclovir. Husband was given three three week infusions, 3 a day for three weeks.......short break.......then Acyclovir again, plus last infusion was with Sedmedrol(maybe mispelled). He became slightly dehydrated and his kidneys were becoming stressed so he was hospitalized. Current (2nd) Neurologist thinks my husband has an orbital lymphoma.
Avatar m tn I use acyclovir to and you must know that it doesnt take effect spontaneously especially the first time your using it. It helps relieve the pain though but might take some time to take effect. Just continue use it and youll see the sore will go away within 3-4 days instead of the usual 7-8 days they take to go away.
Avatar f tn s more about your genes as to how often you get recurrences than anything you are doing as far as diet, stress reduction and exercise. Eating healthy , exercising and keeping stress low are always a good idea but honestly they have little to do with how often you get recurrences :( no reason to stop eating chocolate!! It won't decrease your ob's and if you are anything like me, you eating chocolate is some days what keeps you from stabbing people....
Avatar m tn I am taking L-Lysene as a suppressor and only take the Acyclovir at the first sign of an outbreak. I was taking 1000mg Valtrex at onset and then 500mg twice a day and everything was clear in 3 days. To get the same effectiveness from Acyclovir how much should I be taking daily during out breaks? I have tried 600mg Acyc 3 times a day but it takes 7 days to clear up. Please advise.
Avatar n tn correct - he's negative and so are you so no reason to take acyclovir. You don't have any reason to think that you have genital herpes.
Avatar f tn I was told I had genital herpes 3 days ago. The outbreak started about 6 days ago. This is the first outbreak and it's extremely painful. The Dr gave me Acyclovir to take for 7 days. How long will it take for it to stop hurting? How long will it take for the Acyclovir to work?
