Accutane vs antibiotics

Common Questions and Answers about Accutane vs antibiotics

accutane

Avatar n tn Why do you wait a year to prescribe topical treatment after Accutane? What skin care regime do you recommend? Do you prescribe antibiotics if the Accutane doesn't perform well? It has been difficult to get rationale for Accutane treatment. Thank you for your advice...
546892 tn?1214525401 Isotretinoin is a type of medication used to treat severe acne (nodlo cystic or nodular acne) which have failed to respond to other treatments including any type of oral antibiotics and topical application creams. Accutane is strong medicine for acne cure but can have serious side effects.
Avatar m tn hi pogopossum, what age did you and your husband take accutane? because im just very worried about its side effects on reproductive organs, (i.g. if taking it during puberty stage/14 years old will make one, especially girls, impotent.) please do reply, im very worried. i am a girl and took it while i was 14. :( thank you!
Avatar n tn I was acne free for 10 years, but then it came back and I developed tiny bumps under my eyes that my dermatologist said were syringoma (after a year of treating it as acne with retin-a and antibiotics). As usual, the antibiotics and retin-a did not do anything to treat my acne problems, so I have begun a new course of Accutane. Immediately after staring the Accutane, I noticed the tiny bumps under my eyes were lessening. After a month they were completely gone.
Avatar m tn Other necessary precautions are to avoid exposure to UV rays, avoid too much alcohol, and not to take tetracycline antibiotics whilst on Accutane or for 5 weeks afterwards. Female Accutane patients must use two forms of contraception whilst on Accutane and for 5 weeks afterwards. Male patients do not need to abstain from unprotected sex but must not donate blood in case it is given to a pregnant women.
Avatar n tn 17 year old daughter having stomach issues, just got a positive test for celiac, has bad acne, derm wants to put her on accutane. I am worried about the accutane and her stomach. Not sure celiac is only cause of stomach aches. Also birth control pill used to control acne, then she went off and it came back worse than ever. She is back on the pill for almost 3 months and it is not working. Why?
Avatar f tn After that i started getting a lot of pimples on my cheeks so the dermatologist put me on antibiotics for 3-4 months. My acne just got worse so i was put on accutane for 2 months and it cleared my skin. By that time i was 17 years old . After two months i started getting pimples again . So for a month and a half i had antibiotics again but they were completely not responsive. My acne got worse than ever before. I did not have systic acne but it was pretty bad .
Avatar m tn I have gone to several dermatologists and have been on a laundry list of antibiotics and tropical’s, none of which did anything to cure or resolve the problem. (if I was to list the antibiotics/tropical’s I have tried it would consume this entire post) As a result of being on all the antibiotics a biopsy confirmed I developed Pityrosporum Folliculitis on my arms. I took oral ketaconazole as well as the topical but neither worked.
Avatar m tn Take accutane, i'm 17 now and went on it when I was 16 and it worked wonders and keeps tje acne away, I had moderate acne and oily skin too....I play Major Junior hockey and it didn't affect my play in a negative bodily way, it boosted my confidence if anything!......I did a 4 month treatment of it on a lower dose so I would reccommend that, higher doses are for sever cases like grade 4 or between 3 and 4.....
Avatar m tn we have tried everything. peels. accutane, birth control pills, creams. so on and so on. is there something or someone out there doing cutting edge treatments? drug trials ? please just a product name or a name of a doctor that can help beyond the norm.
Avatar n tn I am now 28 and am pretty discouraged. I have tried everything there is. All the antibiotics and topicals. My acne rarely got bad, but I almost always seem to have a few zits, few ingrown hairs, few blackheads, and a few inflamed whiteheads. I do have periods when I am pretty clear, but this usually only lasts a few days. My dermatologist decided it was time to give accutane a try. I did a 7 month course and reached the target cumulative dose of 120 mg/kg.
Avatar n tn My 15-year old son is in his 4th month of Accutane. He just completed his 3rd day of football practice and is experiencing severe pain in his hips. He insists that the pain is not muscular. (He is an avid cyclist and has ridden over 100 miles on his bicycle and competed in Olympic distance triathlons, so he understands muscular-related pain.) So, what could be causing the hip pain and/or do you think that there is a high probability that it is related to the Accutane? Thanks.
Avatar n tn By all means discuss this with your dermatologist and share your frustration. There are other options besides Accutane. If you do take Accutane, you will need regular blood tests to check your liver and your cholesterol and triglycerides. You will also need to register with the Federal iPledge program, or else no pharmacy can dispense the medication. When Accutane is given for the kind of acne you say you have, it may clear things up, only to have the acne return several months later.
Avatar f tn She has been through several antibiotics with no results. She is currently on Bactrim and due to go back to Dermatologist tomorrow with suggestion of starting Accutane. She woke up with this acne in mid-December and began taking Vyvanse a few weeks before. Could there be any correlation? I don't want to jump into Accutane if Vyvanse could be causing it but she is so self-conscious.
Avatar n tn You may be considered for Accutane if you have experienced relapse or failure after trying 2 different oral antibiotics, topical treatments and an anti-androgen contraceptive pill (female patients only). Accutane must be taken for at least 16 weeks and provides a long term remission from acne in 80% of cases. It has many potential side effects but this must be balanced against the fact it can help people with severe nodular or cystic acne. Hope this is helpful, Eloise.
Avatar m tn said not to worry about the results he just wants me to be checked out by a specialist to see about the Accutane or stronger antibiotics. But still when your tests read "Abnormal" you still worry. Other important info: I have been on and off Minocycline 100mg since may of last year Thanks for your time!
Avatar f tn The oral antibiotics were of no further help so we started Accutane in Dec 2013. She had the terrible initial flare but it has not stopped!! She started out on Accutane 30mg twice a day and then bumped up to 40mg twice a day. Then dropped to 40mg once a day. She weighs about 155lbs. This whole time she has been on and off again with Prednisone as high as 30mg once a day with tapering doses. Once she tapers down to 10mg she begins with large cysts once again.
Avatar n tn Steroid rosacea is possible. I suggest stopping all steroids, by cream or by mouth. Topical antibiotics like metronidazole may help. If you weren't on Accutane, oral doxycycline might be useful, but you can't take that while taking Accutane (which may itself help if you finish off the course and don't use steroids any more.) This rash may take some time to heal, but it should in the end go away completely. Milk and food have nothing to do with it that I can think of. Best. Dr.
Avatar n tn I have undergone 2 4 month courses of Accutane. The first starting in Aug of 2006, and the 2nd in Aug of 2007. My question has less to do with acne and more to do with a skin disorder that only surfaced after using the tane. Shortly after my 1st course of tane I developed a case of scalp folliculitis. It dissapeared completely during my 2nd course of tane. To my surprise the scalp folliculitis has returned even after the 2nd course of tane.
Avatar f tn and advised me that I would not be able to take many oral antibiotics because I was taking accutane. She also said the best thing to do is to continue washing my face with mild soaps like "dove" and warm water. However, I am scared to use any "soapy" materials with a scent. My questions are 1.
Avatar f tn Till then follow the treatment that has been prescribed to you and use Accutane only under medical guidance. Avoid going out in the sun while taking Accutane. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
Avatar f tn earlier i was on antibiotics and then took accutane...from Feb 2011 to May 2011 i was on doxycycline (and then whn i had another severe acne break out) from Sept 2011 to Dec 2011 i was taking azithromycin and from Jan 2012 to March 2012 i was on tane... i m not ready to take oral medications any more... for nearly past two and a half years i was on antibiotics. my stomach is a complete mess now. COMPLETE MESS!! Now the SOLUTION i have found!
Avatar n tn He had been on antibiotics for 2 years combined with topical prescriptions and also Nicomide. He is a strong competative athlete. He has been complaining of back/hip pain. I am so worried about him being on this medication. There are so many reported side effects with this, I wonder what the percentage of people experience these side effects. Why would his back be hurting. What exactly is the Claravis doing to his back?
Avatar f tn the dermatologist gave him a course of antibiotics which, unfortunately, did no good. She has said that he will need to take tetracycline in September which I am dubious about. My son gets depressed enough without the help of drugs. I have been wondering that since acne is a hormonal problem, would it be a good idea for me to take him to an endocrinologist or would this just cause another issue? The thought of messing with his hormones scares me a little. How about a homeopathic doctor?
