Accutane liver

Common Questions and Answers about Accutane liver

accutane

Avatar n tn The thing is my mom is a bit scared because of what she has heard about the possible long term effects of accutane. Is it true that the drug can cause serious liver damage etc? I am aware of the short term effects of accutane (chapped lips, blured vision etc) but can someone enlighten me on what can possibly happen in the long run with my health after i take this drug?
Avatar f tn Hi. Accutane increases the risk of liver problems so avoid too much alcohol whilst taking this medicine. Eloise.
Avatar m tn Other necessary precautions are to avoid exposure to UV rays, avoid too much alcohol, and not to take tetracycline antibiotics whilst on Accutane or for 5 weeks afterwards. Female Accutane patients must use two forms of contraception whilst on Accutane and for 5 weeks afterwards. Male patients do not need to abstain from unprotected sex but must not donate blood in case it is given to a pregnant women.

Avatar n tn I had to stop taking accutane halfway through my treatment. I was 10 weeks into the course. I had to stop for 5 weeks due to elevated enzymes. It is now safe to resume treatment. Does the break in treatment mean that I will have to restart the whole course? My derm says that I should be able to resume the course at the 10-week mark. I am worried that the accutane will not be effective due to the 5 week break in the middle of the treatment. I would be grateful for your opinion on this. Thanks.
Avatar f tn Does anyone know about the scarring after-effects of accutane? I've read several reports of scarring left after it's use. I'm sure that scars are to be expected, as with any open wound, but I don't know if these reports are by anyone with abnormalities with healing/scarring. Here is the situation... I have mild, maybe slightly moderate acne. I get keloids on other parts of my body, but thankfully not my face. I still get abnormal facial scarring though.
Avatar m tn My dermatologist has prescribed me Isotretinoin (Accutane) around 20 mg. However i feel uneasy and very worried because i had read the following medical research papers where it tells the harmful side effects Isotretinoin has such as teratogenic and more importantly the cause of eye disorders, like impaired night vision, cataracts, optic neuritis, corneal opacities and dry eye. I had check in PubMed about this and i encountered the following http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10746459.
Avatar n tn By all means discuss this with your dermatologist and share your frustration. There are other options besides Accutane. If you do take Accutane, you will need regular blood tests to check your liver and your cholesterol and triglycerides. You will also need to register with the Federal iPledge program, or else no pharmacy can dispense the medication. When Accutane is given for the kind of acne you say you have, it may clear things up, only to have the acne return several months later.
Avatar m tn Please explore other options with your dermatologist. If Accutane has not affected your liver function and your lipid profile, then we need not be unduly worried. Avatar n tn I have a 15.5 year old son that was treated with accutane when he was almost14 years old. A bone age x-ray was taken before the start of accutane and the reading was a of a normal 14 year old. After the 20 week accutane treatment we had another bone age x-ray taken and the reading was of a person of 15.5 years of age but the actual age of my son was 14 years 2 months. His height growth since the treatment has been only 1.5 inches. The height of my son was 68.5 inches at the first bone age x-ray.
Avatar n tn I took Accutane in the fall of 2004 and I experienced severe hair loss. (I'm a girl). My hair came out in handfulls for about 6 months. The large amount of hair that usually falls out after washing or brushing hair was falling out every half an hour if i ran my fingers through my hair. I lost about 60% of my hair. It stopped for a few months and started again for a few months to a lesser degree though. And now, 3.5 years later, it stills falls out more frequently than it should.
Avatar n tn My 16 1/2 year old son has been on Accutane (60mg per day) for 2 months. His blood tests show liver function is great and triglycerides have stayed low. I am worried, however, about his complaints with joint pain. He recently had x rays and an MRI done on his right knee (which was an issue b4 the accutane) and then got relief for that knee when it was drained of excess fluid. He complains that he feels like an old man, something is always hurting.
Avatar f tn I was on Accutane for 6 months @ 20mg daily. I have been off for 7 months and the pain in my joints and bones has only gotten worse! I'm worried the drug is still in my body as I'm STILL suffering all the symptoms (dry eyes, dry/itchy scalp, joint/bone pain). PLEASE help me! I used to be an athelete. I had to quit all physical activity including my waitressing job because I simply cannot move. A stroll in the park leaves me stiff and aching.
Avatar n tn My 15-year old son is in his 4th month of Accutane. He just completed his 3rd day of football practice and is experiencing severe pain in his hips. He insists that the pain is not muscular. (He is an avid cyclist and has ridden over 100 miles on his bicycle and competed in Olympic distance triathlons, so he understands muscular-related pain.) So, what could be causing the hip pain and/or do you think that there is a high probability that it is related to the Accutane? Thanks.
Avatar n tn dry skin and mucous membranes, headache, increased liver enzymes, disturbances in the composition of the blood (eg increased cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar; decreased red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets), pain in the muscles and joints, mood changes, hair loss or visual disturbances. It is advised when taking this medication to monitor their blood and liver enzymes because of this effect. However, ironj deficiency anemia can go back after stopping the medication.
Avatar f tn I eventually went on Accutane - I have VERY mixed feelings about this med - it DID get rid of the acne. . .but the dry skin, dry eyes, bleeding lips, etc. were very painful. In addition, it also has damaging effects on the liver and kidneys as well - my once very low cholesterol shot up about 200 pts. I now suffer from severe arthritis which I believe I can attribute to the accutane.
Avatar n tn Hi. Accutane is prescribed for severe acne which has not responded to an adequate (normally 2 years) course of oral antibiotics and topical treatment. It is not intended to be given as a first line treatment, and is not indicated for acne occuring before puberty. Care must be taken when prescribing to adolescent patients who have not finished growing.
Avatar m tn Recently I got a really bad infection that requires 3 different antibiotics and a lot of paracetamol to lower the fever. It took me 21 days to get out of bed. During that time I was on and off Accutane (isotretanoin). It's been 2 weeks since the infection cleared off and i started randomly vomiting all of the food I eat at random days and at different times. Is it possible that I elevated my liver enzymes, and is it possible that they are causing this nasea and vomiting.
Avatar n tn Could it be possible that HSV could result in elevated liver enzyme levels??? Or does it cause levels to be elevated? I just got some blood test results back and it seems I've got elevated liver enzyme levels? Could anyone with some knowledge of this shed some light for me! Thanks so much!

Avatar m tn I ordered it from two sites and when the generic tane arrived they were indeed sealed in blister packs so I thought they cant be that bad b/c they were indeed all sealed. Anyway, I know the dangers of taking accutane w/o the supervision of a doctor. So what im trying to say is ive had liver func. done and plenty of other blood tests (white blood cell count, cbc, etc). IM NOT concerned that this atane (from india) did anything in terms of normal accutane side effects.
Avatar f tn If I have gingivitis to the point where my gums bleed and I sometimes can see blood and if shared a drink or smoke with someone who had equally bad gingivitis. Could I get hep c tht way even tho the saliva shared was very small. Please advice I dont have money to get tested. And almost everything i read says no. But theres some tht say its possible.
Avatar n tn I've only been on Accutane (actually, a generic brand of it) for ten days, and I experienced my first migraine on day 9. I am unsure if the migraine could be connected to Accutane, but I did a little research and some instances of migraines have been reported by Accutane users. I am just uncertain because I haven't been on it very long, but I am already experiencing dry lips, so I suppose I could be experiencing other side effects already, too.
Avatar f tn Prolonged stress Excessive caffeine (more than 4 cups of coffee daily) Cigarette smoking Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) Some pharmaceuticals such as Prednisone (corticosteroid), hormone replacement therapy, antifungals, Accutane (acne treatment), Remeron (antidepressant) and several liver and kidney drugs.
190885 tn?1333025891 that seems like a kind of quick elevation I sure like the first ones better, are you und? Are you taking any other meds? I saw someone in the hospital with high elevated enzymes due to accutane...
Avatar m tn Take accutane, i'm 17 now and went on it when I was 16 and it worked wonders and keeps tje acne away, I had moderate acne and oily skin too....I play Major Junior hockey and it didn't affect my play in a negative bodily way, it boosted my confidence if anything!......I did a 4 month treatment of it on a lower dose so I would reccommend that, higher doses are for sever cases like grade 4 or between 3 and 4.....
