Accutane and liver problems

Common Questions and Answers about Accutane and liver problems

Avatar m tn The common side effects with prolonged usage are liver toxicity, pancreatitis, vision problems, hyperostosis and decreased bone mineral density. If you are not keen on starting it discuss with the dermatologist if any alternative drug can be used. Also clarify your concerns about this drug. Keep me posted on how your son is doing. Best regards!
Avatar m tn Although at this dose, accutane is less likely to cause long term side effects but it may cause, hair loss, gastrointestinal side effects, depression and liver and cardiac side effects. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. 1678288 tn?1304563909 Although many will ARGUE that it is Coincidence with these problems and people taking Accutane. Avatar f tn Hi, all! In a desperate but probably useless search of a reason I have contracted Hepatitis C, I have been doing some pretty heavy research on the internet and trying to go back in my past and see where all of this began. Well, when I was in my early 20's, I was on an acne drug, called "Accutane". I recently found some articles stating that Accutane can cause hepatitis and other liver damage. Has anyone ever heard of this?
Avatar m tn He told me everything will go back to normal and my hair will grow back. I have a love/hate relationship with taking accutane. I love that my face is now 100% clear and i hope it stays that way but i hate the way it made me feel. I probably should have gone off the meds when i started feeling anxious all the time. I have a few questions: Has anyone had/have sticky skin b/c of accutane?
Avatar f tn Hello. I'm 16 and I'm and currently taking Accutane. I've been taking 40 milligrams for about a year now. The truth about Accutane is that it's just a very high dose of vitamin A. You take a certain amount of milligrams for a certain period of time, depending on how bad your acne is. The reason the medicine required a recall was because people were abusing Accutane.
Avatar n tn Accutane side effects are real, however you do get use to them and if your healthy they are not as bad. I watched my brother on accutane and he told me it was so bad he would never go near it again. I'm on it now and I'm in my 6th month, side effects are livable. The derm wont prescribe it unless you have tried other methods first.
Avatar f tn I took another liver test on the day of my 1-month dermatologist appointment (for the purpose of refilling my prescription) which came back above normal (I believe the nurse said they were a little elavated). They are now taking me off the Accutane for two weeks and I will take another liver test at that point. I did not drink alcohol or any protein shakes while on the medicine. I believe Accutane is my only hope. Is there anything I can do to offset the effect of Accutane on my liver?
Avatar n tn I wouldn't smoke pot or anything as all illegal drugs can cause hallucinations and psychosis. Getting mental problems or depression from accutane is rare, but if you take other drugs at the same time you're increasing your risk. As accutane affects your liver you may get drunk quicker and dehydrated. It's only for 6 months and you're gonna have no acne at the end of it, so it will all be worth it.
Avatar n tn Doctors recommend limiting alcohol because of a mild risk of liver problems with Accutane. Your doctor is checking your liver, I'm sure, as part of routine follow-up. Moderate alcohol intake seems reasonable. 4. Retin-A can lighten the skin a bit, but not permanently. 5. Yes. Best. Dr.
Avatar n tn Accutane has been linked to numerous potential side effects including depression, menstrual disturbance, liver problems, sunburn and hair loss. However, like you, whilst I have found patients describe weight loss/weight gain on the internet I have not found any medical evidence to support this. Be careful working out whilst on Accutane as it can cause muscle and joint pain. Eloise.
630458 tn?1223263163 also the dermatologist she warned you of getting pregnant and causing birth defects, and get a blood test once a month for liver problems. I'm not sexually active and it is not required to be on birth control pills, I tried those for acne, I hate them. Bnut since your sexually active use a condom and take necessary procautions as you said you have done.
Avatar n tn He explained the risk of liver problems and the need for blood work before and during treatment. He also said that the medication could also effect growth. He mentioned that during clinical trials two children stopped growing while on Acutane. He did say that the children were on different doses than what my son would be on. Well, being the overly nervous mom that I am, I looked up Acutane in the Physicians Desk Reference. It mentioned the two children who stopped growing.
Avatar n tn Joint pain is a common side effect to Accutane. You should tell your doctor about it and have him reduce the dose of the drug. Hopefully that will get rid of the pain and you won't need to take any additional meds to fight it. Good luck!
Avatar n tn Hello, I have been of Accutane now for two and a half months and my face looks great; however, after I completed my course, I noticed my hair was falling out a lot more than usual. It is still falling out and now it is starting to become noticeable. I have heard that in some Accutane users the hair goes through a "shock" period which causes hair loss. Is this true? Also, does the hair ever grow back and, if so, when does this usually happen?
Avatar m tn It has worked very well for a while, but I have started experiencing things like pink eye, mood changes (deppression), skin rash, pain in the liver area, difficulty swallowing, breathing problems, etc. I went to doctors and they kept on putting me on medications, but no real difference, until I read that all the symptoms that I have are possible side effects of accutane. It also states that it can cause diabetes and the Steven Johnson skin syndrome which really scares me.
Avatar n tn I have never encountered anyone having severe kidney inflammation as a result of accutane. More commonly, it is problems with the liver that are screened for during therapy. However, there are many rare side effects of accutane, listed in the leaflet enclosed with it, which unfortunately do affect a minority of people. Mainly side effects are not serious such as dry lips or dry skin. Has your daughter had kidney problems before?
Avatar n tn Every doctor I've described my symptoms to has dismissed accutane as the cause. They say that all the pain and problems that I have are from depression. I feel like being in pain everyday has caused me to be depressed.
Avatar n tn In regards to Accutane and depression. My 21yr old son was on Accutane for 6mos., 3yrs.ago. Just found out last week that two months after his last treatment with Accutane he became very depressed, he is a good actor because we didn't really notice it and being in the teen years figured it was somewhat normal behavior. He got good grades, carried on with part-time job etc. But he also told me he attempted suicide by taking overdose of Aleve, allergy meds, whatever he could find.
Avatar m tn I think as long as he's under doctors care, and is very carefully supervised for any health problems caused by accutane he should be ok to use it.
Avatar n tn Accutane is known to cause problems in skeletal system of growing teens. I took it around the same age as your son and had severe pain. I called "Rosche" the company that makes Accutane and they said it can stunt growth in teens by closing the epiphyseal plates prematurely. I'm 21 now and my height of 5'7'' hasn't increased since my last cycle of Accutane. I also remember having severe joint and muscle pain after HS tennis practices. - 21 male.
Avatar n tn By all means discuss this with your dermatologist and share your frustration. There are other options besides Accutane. If you do take Accutane, you will need regular blood tests to check your liver and your cholesterol and triglycerides. You will also need to register with the Federal iPledge program, or else no pharmacy can dispense the medication. When Accutane is given for the kind of acne you say you have, it may clear things up, only to have the acne return several months later.
309783 tn?1271961829 I the event of a relapse from accutane how long must the patient wait before going back on tetracycline antibiotics? I ask this because accutane has a long half-life and i know accutane and tetracyclines cannot be taken at the same time. Many thanks, Eloise.
Avatar n tn Despite the risks that may occur with Accutane, I believe this was a miracle drug for me! I had lab work done every month to test my liver and never had any problems or complications. I have read some very negative things about Accutane and it's possible risk and side effects but I believe that all drugs have their pros and cons. My self esteem was very low because of my severe acne problem.
Avatar n tn If you have to take antibiotics for a kidney infection or UTI whilst on Accutane, make sure they are NOT tetracyclines which are contra-indicated for use with Accutane. Accutane can cause both kidney and liver problems and you should be having regular blood tests whilst on this medication. Kidney and liver problems will not necessarily preclude you from further Accutane treatment, but you may be advised to continue at a lower dose or take a break from the medication.
Avatar m tn Hello, I am a 17 y/o male who has cystic acne and has been on 20 mg/day ro-accutane for 7months now. I am worried because i have been on it this long and although it has been working, i still have bumps that need to subside. My dermatologist insists that i continue on this low dose so as to avoid harsh side effects, which i can understand, but right now i dont care much for the SE's i just want my acne fully gone.
Avatar f tn earlier i was on antibiotics and then took accutane...from Feb 2011 to May 2011 i was on doxycycline (and then whn i had another severe acne break out) from Sept 2011 to Dec 2011 i was taking azithromycin and from Jan 2012 to March 2012 i was on tane... i m not ready to take oral medications any more... for nearly past two and a half years i was on antibiotics. my stomach is a complete mess now.
