Avatar n tn Can a teenager have height growth as long as his growth plates have not fused? His plates are currently open but of a 17 year old. Are there ways to slow the epiphyseal premature closing ? He was originally predicted to have a mature height of 73" and the mental strain of a medication changing that is a concern.
Avatar m tn hmmm not to mention they did a test on hamsters that closed their growth plates and peolple have taken pics of the growth plates of 14 year olds and after took it again and they were freaking closed! I wouldnt do it unless he is 6' or over right now. Thats my 2 cents u can always try to find other ways to get rid of acne, but once ur bones are fused u aint growing any more unless you want him to stay in the body that he has now as 14?

Avatar f tn He recently had a an x-ray of his left wrist and it was determined that his bone age was 17 yrs and that his growth plates in his hand were closed. Growth plates in the wrist were almost closed. I was told the wrist and knee growth plates are 90% the same regarding growth plates. Also, he had elevated thyroid antibodies. Not yet needing thyroid medication, but we have a strong maternal history of Hashimoto's disease.
Avatar m tn ve just been recently prescribed by my dermatologist Isotretinoin (accutane) and am on my 4th day of treatment. After doing extensive research on how accutane affects growth, it really concerns me as I'm currently only 16 years and 8 months old and hence am still in the growing stage of my life. My dermatologist however has prescribed me a very low dosage of 10mg per day for 7 consecutive days, after which would be switching onto a 30mg PER WEEK dose.
Avatar n tn Accutane is known to cause problems in skeletal system of growing teens. I took it around the same age as your son and had severe pain. I called "Rosche" the company that makes Accutane and they said it can stunt growth in teens by closing the epiphyseal plates prematurely. I'm 21 now and my height of 5'7'' hasn't increased since my last cycle of Accutane. I also remember having severe joint and muscle pain after HS tennis practices. - 21 male.
Avatar f tn It is best not to interfere with normal growth process. You are already 18 years old, so your growth plates would be all more or less fused. You are unlikely to grow much taller than what you are. At most you may gain an inch, but it is more likely that you will gain a centimeter or more. Do discuss this with your doctor. Take care!
Avatar f tn Your growth plates fuse so slowly that you will not feel it. Boys usually fuse between 18 and 21 so I'm sure that's not it. If it makes you feel any better, I was 4'8 when I was 15 and am a 5'11 adult.
Avatar f tn Saw an orthopaedic doctor who took X-rays and found she has open growth plates throughout her spine and mild kyphosis. Her bones are that of a 12 year old. He said it is essentially a waiting game until they close for pain to subside. Earlier this she she sprained her ankle. She is having therapy now because of continued pain. Dr said she also has open growth plates in ankle. Does anyone have any kids who are experiencing this? Did it get better?
Avatar m tn Another example is are hands when you are going through puberty your supposed growth plates are clearly seen in bone age tests on the x ray but once you hit early adult hood they are undetectable under x ray and are still not presumed closed in fact your feet and hands can continue to grow for your whole life in are current medical understand especially if you develop acromegaly at a later age, which contradicts are understand of are growth plates fusing if we still believe are hands and feet c

Avatar m tn The size of these growth plates corresponds directly to your potential adult size. Your growth plates could still have an inch or two in them at age 16. Good nutrition is important to growth, with a diet rich in protein, as well as calcium, magnesium, Vit. D3, and other minerals.
Avatar m tn i was diagnosed with Rheumatic fever when i was 8, it did cause chronic inflammation in both of my knees, i'm now 21 and 5'9. did it affect the growth plates in this area? or my potential height?
Avatar n tn s rate of growth in height as well as xray findings of the left wrist called a bone age, the wrist maturity is compared to standards and the growth plates are looked at in regards to an age equivalent.
Avatar m tn Hello! The long bones fuse at the age of 20 years in males and around 19 years in females and it is possible to grow in length further from your present age and height. You height is determined primarily with the genetic inheritance you had from your parents and fore fathers. The other factor is your endocrine hormones like growth factors etc. and proper diet and exercise. I would suggest you to follow up with an endocrinologist and take it forward and do not self medicate. Take care!
Avatar n tn I have seen my x rays today and it seems all my growth plates in my wrist have closed (I have compared it to an 18 year old bone age x ray and they are very similar whereas the bone age x ray photo of the 17 year old has still some space in his radius. I have read somewhere that some growth plates don’t close until you are about 25 years old. 1. Is this true? 2. Which bones are these? 3. Can I still grow if given growth hormone?

Avatar n tn The doctor said that the xrays showed that my shoulder and elbow growth plates have closed!!! Does this mean I will not get any taller? I am 5ft 71/2 inches. My dad is 5ft 8inches and my mom is 5ft 3 inches? Thanks!
Avatar m tn The doctor treating him noted that the growth plates in his wrist are closed and that he was close to done growing (another inch or so). This distressed us because he only 5'5" . I am 5'8" and my wife is 5'5". I always assumed he would be about as tall as I am at least. We took him to an endo who did blood work and x-rayed his wrist. Blood work is fine but the growth plates in the wrist are indeed fused.
Avatar f tn In addition, there are many techniques used by experienced orthopedists to avoid excessive damage to the growth plates.
Avatar n tn The doctor has told us that his x-ray (wrist) shows that his growth plates are fused. Is it possible that the x-ray reading is not accurate, or that he will continue to grow anyway? His dad and uncles are 6ft and over. The shortest man in my family is 5'8. The doctor also said his bone age is 19- don't some boys grow even after 19? Any advice?
Avatar f tn said looked like growth plates were starting to close by knee. My son wears a 10.5 shoe and 6 foot win span. I’m 5’10 mom is 5’6. Can he still grow another couple inches? He did grow a .5 inch the past 30 days.
Avatar n tn I've only been on Accutane (actually, a generic brand of it) for ten days, and I experienced my first migraine on day 9. I am unsure if the migraine could be connected to Accutane, but I did a little research and some instances of migraines have been reported by Accutane users. I am just uncertain because I haven't been on it very long, but I am already experiencing dry lips, so I suppose I could be experiencing other side effects already, too.
Avatar m tn But when i reached an endocrinologist, he took some tests and i was normal. He took an X ray to find out if the growth plates were closed, and its too late, to my surprise, at 16, my bone age was reported to be 19+/-. He said i couldnt do anything and shouldnt waste money on hgh supplements to gain a few cms. He did another test to see why i have advanced bone age, the test reported i had a bit above average testosterone (9.16 ng/ml). i neither had a growth spurt or hair overgrowth.
Avatar f tn My son will be 22 in February. He was diagnosed at the age of 19 with Hypogonadism due to a small pituitary gland. He takes injections three times a week of Norvel (testosterone). Today a workmen's comp dr took and x-ray of his wrist and said his growth plates are still open. His current Endo doctor said he would need to stop his injections and take another medication to close the plates. He doesn't want to stop the injections because of the effects it will cause him.
