Abscess vs cyst

Common Questions and Answers about Abscess vs cyst

abscess

Avatar n tn From what you are describing I would think it may be a Bartholin's cyst or abscess. The Bartholin glands are in the lower portion of the vagina and while the cyst isn't supposed to be painful, the abscess is and I would imagine if the cyst were big enough it would hurt. You may want to see your gyn about this. Also you can google Bartholin's cyst and you will get a lot of information.
Avatar f tn I went to ER for complaints of cyst on my back. Was afraid of an abscess. Had become irritated from everyone squeezing and prodding it. ER doctor said she thought pain was just from everyone disturbing it, however she did ultrasound and said she thought there may be a little fluid there. She numbed area and did a small incision. Nothing came out, so she said there was no fluid, however, I need to watch area because of the scalpel slice. She placed me on bactrim for three days.
Avatar f tn A painful boil inside vagina can be an infected Bartholin cyst or an abscess or even an infected polyp. It is difficult to comment beyond this without examining. Since it is causing so much pain and the doctors are not telling you what it is, it would be better to get it removed and then biopsied to know what it is. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar f tn The cyst you are referring to could be an abscess. I had it a while back with concomitants like profuse perspiration, low grade fever and loss of weight and yes shooting pain on the right side. I thought with the pain I had, it could be a renal problem, but it turned out to be an abscess. More specifically it is called Amoebic Liver Abscess. The abscess, if it is one, is relative small and can be cured by antibiotics. No need to go in for aspiration. It is 100% curable.
Avatar n tn A CT scan would be diagnostic, however certain lumps can be diagnosed by palpation under experienced hands. If the lump is thought to be an abscess or cyst, then a fine needle aspiration cytology helps diagnose the cause. Please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper referral. Take care!
Avatar f tn If however the cyst was infected or inflamed it can cause an infection and may eventually abscess. Some abscess can become serious and cause septicemia (blood infection). In either case it would be best to have your cat examined by a vet in case it is the infectious type.
Avatar n tn Office-based procedures include insertion of a Word catheter for a duct cyst or gland abscess, and marsupialization of a cyst; marsupialization should not be used to treat a gland abscess. Broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy is warranted only when cellulitis is present. Excisional biopsy is reserved for use in ruling out adenocarcinoma in menopausal or perimenopausal women with an irregular, nodular Bartholin's gland mass. (Am Fam Physician 2003;68:135-40.
Avatar n tn There are no reports of cyst formation as a result of spinal steroid injection. There are reports which mention abscess formation, but it would have more symptoms than just pain. Anyways, it will be useful to rule out an abscess. Repeated needle injury and infection can lead to an abscess. An abscess is a localized collection of infected material, secretions and is usually enclosed in a closed "cyst-like" space. There are chances that the cyst may be present earlier.
Avatar n tn I just had a bartholin abscess surgically removed. I wanted to know when i could have sex again.
Avatar f tn I had them removed by laparoscopy, but the surgeon ended up having to make a lower abdominal incision to get the biggest cyst out and repair my ovaries (also the cyst ruptured during removal I was told). I went home the next day, then returned to the hospital 3 days later with severe abdominal pain and fever. I was diagnosed with a pelvic abscess and severe infection. After a week in the hospital, I was sent home with a picc-line in my arm and a drainage tube for the abscess.
Avatar n tn it could be an ingrown hair, but it could be an abscess as well. If it developes a white head do not pop it...go to a doctor or a local planned parenthood (or womens clinic) and have them exam it.
Avatar f tn I have not across any who has had a needle injected to clear rubbish out of a cyst, boil or abscess. If it does become large, the doctor can lance it to drain the rubbish out. The doctor will always examine the "lump" and will make the decision whether an antibiotic should be prescribed. Boils and abscesses do start from having a small pimple and infection can spread inwards which can become very dangerous and life threatening.
Avatar n tn Hi there. This looks like an injection site abscess or cyst following intramuscular injections. You need to consult a general surgeon to assess this lesion, he would decide whether it requires incison and drainage( abscess) or enucleation of the cyst. It could also be fibrosis of a portion of the muscle due to the drug injected. Hope this helps .Take care.

Avatar f tn Based upon these findings, I have it ruled down to folliculitis vs. a cyst. The pain mimics that of past underarm folliculitis, however due to the location of the inflammation, drainage or lancing isn't possible for a solo act. I have doxycycline available, and was going to restart it to see if this lump disappears (along with witch hazel for anal-rectal cleaning). Any help would be appreciated!
Avatar f tn Hello, From your symptoms,it looks like a Bartholin's abscess or cyst. There are glands in the vaginal lips called Bartholin’s glands. These can become painful and swollen, and an abscess can form. This often causes blockage in the main duct from the gland, and a cyst develops. This is felt as a painless, hard swelling. In such cases, antibiotics may be helpful, or surgical treatment might be required.
Avatar n tn It means that it can be a cyst and the entire contents of the cyst have not been taken out. Consult your dermatologist and discuss this with him. Recurrent boils/abscess are found in diabetes, HIV infection, or other immune system disorders. So please get your blood sugar evaluated Hope it helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
Avatar m tn I have had a smallish (maybe 2 cm in diameter) skin abscess or infected cyst on my back next to my cervical spine for the last 2 weeks which doesn't seem to be getting bigger or coming to a head (I tried squeezing it thinking it was a pimple at first.) When I touch it, it feels soft/puffy as though there's some fluid under it (same as a gum boil) and it's no longer hot/painful, just itchy sometimes.
Avatar f tn Findings are most consistent with a large hemorrhagic left ovarian cyst with evidence for recent cyst partial cyst rupture/hemorrhage with complex fluid surrounding the uterus and left ovary with small amount in the cul-de-sac. Findings similar to preceding CT study. 2. Other differential considerations include tubo-ovarian abscess or large endometrioma/fibroma.
Avatar m tn I agree that you should take him to another vet if he gets worse, and if in your opinion this cyst/abscess has not been cleaned, drained out, or attended to properly. Although the antibiotics should usually help, an antiseptic wash is also usually recommended after the pus has been drained out. And if it is an abscess, it is wise to keep it open, keep it bathed with warm water and antiseptic until all the pus is gone, and it shows clean pink skin.
