Avatar n tn Hello, In a dental abscess, or tooth abscess there is accumulation of pus inside the teeth or gums. The abscess usually originates from a bacterial infection and is mostly caused by a dental infection. The common presenting complaints are severe toothache, breath odour, fever, pain when chewing, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling of gums, swollen glands etc. It can be diagnosed with the help of clinical examination, dental x-rays and other tests. Antibiotics are given for the infection.
Avatar m tn I had an abscess in my tooth and it has been extracted now it's infected and I am on antibiotics it is still bleeding after 48 hours now just wondering if I could get a bit of advice please
Avatar f tn I have never had a tooth abscess until now. I called my dentist and they are trying to help me to keep cost down bc I have no insurance and xmas is right around corner so money is tight. I have a back molar that broke about 3 months ago ive been trying to save up for root canal but now I think I will need it pulled. The tooth stopped hurting and then I got the pus pocket under it that would flare up but then go down.
Avatar m tn Hello, There are various causes of dental abscess after root canal. Improperly done root canal, cracked or perforated root, reinfection, faulty crown etc are few of them. An improperly done root canal is the commonest cause of abscess after root canal. It may happen that the canals may be very curved or the filling may extend up to the tip and may fall short.

Avatar n tn Do you think this is a definite sign of a tooth abscess due to the trauma of the crown? When I called about the appointment, they were already talking about the possibility of being referred to an endodontist for a potential root canal. Is this my only option? Can I not just kill off the infection with antibiotics? I broke the bank on the crown (no dental insurance), and I simply cannot afford another expensive procedure.
Avatar m tn I have fairly white healthy teeth, but I have an abscess behind my tooth, how can I get rid of it, or sooth the pain.
Avatar m tn Yes i have they give me tablets then said come back Monday to have it out, but all the swelling as now spread to my neck so a bit worries
Avatar m tn I developed a smaller abcess on my cheek at the weekend as a result to poor dental upkeep. I had a root left in my mouth and a tooth that had been over filled from a previous visit to the dentist 7 years ago that should have really have been a crown. I went to the dentist today and they pulled the root they said that it was most likely the cause of the abscess and after an hour and a half in the chair they finally pulled the roots.
Avatar m tn I had a cracked tooth,I waited and put off something being done about it,and it became abscess,a pocket formed underneath it and also my jaw swelled up an I believe became infected, I went to the doctor, they numbed and drained the pocket, and gave me 2 antibiotics and a pain med, I'm no longer in pain (the cracked tooth is a little loose) but its been going on 3 days of antis and no change has occurred, is that normal? should I go back to the doctor?
Avatar f tn If you don't have a problem with aspirin, you could try dissolving some baby aspirin on your tooth and the surrounding area. Or oil of cloves to help numb it. But I am not a doctor, so you really should find someone to call. Your local pharmacist may be helpful. They have a lot of training. Good luck. I hope you feel better soon.
Avatar f tn I didn't have a dime to my name when i was 16 and i had my first abscess...i went to a low income facility and showed them i didn't have anything but i needed my tooth gone. They said it would cost me $50 and i sat in front of a gas station and bummed money until i had enough and went back and got it pulled. Also, if it hurts, take an aspirin and break it in pieces...put a small piece in your tooth. It kills the root but at this point, who cares. It will take away A LOT of the pain.
Avatar m tn by the time i got to the er the doctor told me that my abscess was 1 inch by 3/8 of an inch big. that is pretty large for an abscess. with something like this the longer you put it off the worst it will get. hope you feel better soon.
Avatar m tn Now I have an abscess on my gum and jaw adjacent to that tooth. I have made an appointment to see a specialist but it will take 2 weeks to be seen. Should I try to get an emergency appointment to get some antibiotics going or should I just wait and see if the abscess doesn't get any worse? Also, why did thhis happen when I had a root canal in the first place?
Avatar f tn I had a root canal done on tooth #29 about ten years ago after an injury to the tooth. All seemed well until I noticed a swelling under this tooth a few weeks ago that hurt when pressed. I called the dentist and was told I had an abscess. She prescribed me 150mg Clindamycin over ten days for the infection and referred me to an endodontist. The endodontist retreated the root canal a couple weeks later. A few hours after the retreated root canal became horribly painful and I noticed some swelling.
Avatar f tn An abscessed tooth is a painful infection at the root of a tooth or between the gum and a tooth. It's most commonly caused by severe tooth decay. Other causes of tooth abscess are trauma to the tooth, such as when it is broken or chipped, and gingivitis or gum disease. These problems can cause openings in the tooth enamel, which allows bacteria to infect the center of the tooth (called the pulp). The infection may also spread from the root of the tooth to the bones supporting the tooth.
Avatar f tn i too had an abscess,my tooth had to be extracted(it was the tooth that already had root canal treatment,i had cracked it) and was on 3 different antibiotics.it took me just over 2weeks to heal.
Avatar n tn If there is a tooth root abscess it is very wise to have the affected tooth extracted. Although the tooth itself may appear to be healthy the root is already compromised. Once you treat the current Abscess with antibiotic's another abscess will probably return unless a curative treatment, such as a root canal is performed. Root canal's are rarely performed in pets since the procedure is more complex than an extraction, and therefore much more costly.
Avatar n tn see both then make a choice endo and a surgeon thats what I did and made the choice for the tooth to be removed and an implant put in. I made the right choice in my case the tooth could not be saved and the implant is amazing better than my real tooth. I chose the later after hearing there was no garantee another root canal would take and if it did maybe for a year or two and I did not want to go to one then have the other a few years later.
Avatar f tn The only possible reason for this abscess that I can think of is that about a year ago, my front tooth got the corner chipped off. Please respond asap... I am a worrier!! This discussion is related to dental abscess.
Avatar f tn I've had a tooth abscess since the beginning of this year sometime. I went to the ER because my jaw had become so swollen that it was completely ridiculous. They gave me penicillin which I took (28 pills, 3 times a day with food). When I finished that bottle I realized that there was still a sort of blister on my gum even though it was much smaller than it used to be.
Avatar f tn I am a 24 yr old female and recently had a tooth abscess that I took care of with 2 different antibiotics (Clyndmiacin and cephelexin). I went to the ER and got the abscess lanced to relieve some of the pressure. I went to my dentist and received a partial root canal. I am feeling no pain in my mouth and the swelling is all gone. Now I'm not sure if the infection is in my heart.
Avatar n tn I went to the dentist Wednesday and he told me i needed a root canal on my front right tooth, overnight the tooth became abscessed and i swelled up like a balloon and had to go back to the dentist. He drained it and injected antibiotics and gave me a prescription for cleocin 150mg, i started the meds straight away, but my swelling keeps coming back while i sleep.
Avatar f tn 6) and the doctors ruled out strep and mono once again and put him on the same medication regimen. Could his symptoms possibly stem from a tooth abscess?? If not a tooth abscess what else do you think could be causing his symptoms? Thank you in advance for your response.
Avatar m tn not however my upper lip and face has begun to swell up and become quite sensitive to touch. after doing some research online I think that I have abscess in my front tooth, but I'm starting to get worried at the fact that my tooth is no longer in pain. Could that mean my tooth is already dead? Also the swelling is getting a little worse every day, I'm not sure how serious all of this is.
