Most x-rays will not provide excellent clarity of a crowned tooth, thus missing the decay. If you are having pain, the tooth under the crown is inflamed, infected and bacteria are usually the cause. Antibiotics may provide some temporary partial relief but will likely not cure the problem. A root canal is most likely needed, and a dentist can do this, but the best is to see an Endodontics, which is a specialist for doing root canals.
I arrive at the office, get an x-ray, dentist looks at my tooth and says I have an abscess and it seemed to have been there for quite some time already. She proceeds do drain it, sends me home on antibiotics and ibuprofen, and tells me to come back on Friday to extract the tooth. My headache only got worse, and I felt pain from behind my nose and eye all the way back to the neck, all on the left side. It "stings" when I inhale deeply, so I imagined it's the sinus cavities.
I went to my regular dentist on 1/13/06 and xrays showed a large abscess in tooth #10, as well as a smaller abscess in tooth #20. On 1/17/06 I had a RCT done on tooth #10, as well as an incision in the roof of my mouth behind that tooth to help extract the infection. On 1/19/06, I had a RCT done on tooth #20, with one 0.05mm post placed. I have been on Antibiotics since 1/13/06, taking Penicillin VK 500mg QID, so I'm now on my Eighth day of antibiotics.
Hi i started with really bad tooth pain and went to the emergency dentist who said its infected and got an abscess. They give me amoxicillin 500mg i started them yesterday teatime then last night my face started to swell up on the right side where the bad tooth is never had this before. Now i look like an hamster what i want to know is how long will it take for the tablets to work i have taken 4 so far. Also most of the pain as gone but still really soar.
make sure your razor is clean. I also use witch hazel under my arms after I shave before I put on deoderant. If you need relief, use a hot towel to bring it to a head. Then burn tha tip of a safety pin or a needle and stick it in that middle. You will need assistance because it hurts like hell. Then SQUEEEEEEEEZE it til you can't squeeze it anymore.
I had a cracked tooth,I waited and put off something being done about it,and it became abscess,a pocket formed underneath it and also my jaw swelled up an I believe became infected, I went to the doctor, they numbed and drained the pocket,and gave me 2 antibiotics and a pain med, I'm no longer in pain (the cracked tooth is a little loose) but its been going on 3 days of antis and no change has occurred, is that normal? should I go back to the doctor?
Hi I have large extremely painful abscess causing severe pain and swelling in gum, jawbone and neck. This is from a tooth diagnosed with internal root asorption. I've been taking anitbiotics for 5 days with no relief. I'm scheduled to see new specialist in 5 days, the first available appointment so I'm officially under nobody's care. Is this a dangerous situation and do I need to do something ASAP instead of waiting for my appointment?
It usually originates from a bacterial infection which has accumulated in the soft dead pulp of the tooth. It can be caused by tooth decay, broken teeth or any extensive periodontal disease. There is no definite time it takes for this abscess to form. It depends on the severity of the organisms and their virulence. This is merely an advice and not a substitute for clinical examination. s got a tooth abscess in a healthy tooth and that the tooth should be extracted. He said it is unusual in cats and that they don't know the cause. He also suggested some antibiotics for a few days before the surgery to help with the infection.
Just wondering if it is worth trying to save the tooth. Go through the course of antibiotics and see if he gets better. My vet made me feel like I was just being cheap and that conventional wisdom is to just remove the tooth.
The gum above the tooth is also perfectly fine. I had an abscess tooth before (oddly the exact same tooth just on the opposite side) about 2 years ago. The constant pressure feeling is the same but the swelling looks slightly different. When tapping my abscessed tooth there was incredible pain but now when i tap this tooth the pain hardly changes. The gum tissue above my abscessed tooth was also very sensitive, dark pink, and began to develop a boil. There is no sign of that this time.
He decided on root canal and called the endodontist (appt is for Thursday). The dentist showed me the film and although the tooth root looks okay (no black area of abscess), there is a "white ring shadow" above the tooth root. He said that is indicative of a sinus problem. May 15 I developed an abscess. They can't get me in to get the 2 teeth pulled until June 25th. The next day, my cheek was the size of a baseball and the meds weren't helping. I went to th ER. Dr numbed it, cut a slit in it, gave me dilaudid &zophran, &sent me home with vicodin. RELIEF!
June 3 it was back. I went to the dentist June 5. He couldn't see me. They called in 825mg amoxicillin 2x a day &the weakest dose of vicodin.
Judging by your description, it is most likely a fistula which is a tract that forms from the abscess of your infected tooth that escapes out to the gums. As long as the fistula in intact, your abscess can drain and slow down the spread of the abscess but if the fistula closes up, the abscess can spread rapidly through your face or neck area.
I would recommend seeing a dentist and getting treatment started.
No. I can tell that this isn't sinus pain. It's more like someone is "ringing out a nerve" in my temple. Like a nerve is being pulled at in there?! So strange. Im going back to Oral Surgeon tomorrow to make sure tooth abscess infection didn't return. AND, then to Neurologist in a few weeks...if i can last that long?!
Most people obtain much relief once a root canal is started. Of course if the tooth is fractured beyond repair, then extraction may be recommended.
You did not mention what his plans were for you. I would most definitely contact him and inform him of your present situation, especially with the weekend approaching so you are not in this same situation again seeking help on a weekend.
I have mod-advanced periodontal disease and developed a PA abscess and cyst in 7 months which caused severe pain and swelling that required extraction. How did it come about? Is it from dental decay combined with periodontal disease? It was tooth 26 with over 7 mm gum pocket and 50% mobility.. Just wondering if I could have saved it earlier with maybe a root canal?

i posted before. i had an abscessed tooth and the abscess spread into my cheek. my dentist put me on keflex but after 10 days there was still noticable swelling in my cheek. so now the dentist has put me on a stronger antibiotic. when i woke up this morning i felt a very large "bubble" on my inside cheek.
I have had a tooth abscess twice..same problem each time and have only used ibuprofen for pain relief and it works as well as any opiate.Just take prilosec to help the stomach and don't go over 2400mg/24 hrs.
I mean to go to the dentist but each time after 3 or 4 days the abscess breaks and everything gets better.
I know I have to go sometime.
