Common Questions and Answers about Abscess tooth reduce swelling

abscess

Avatar f tn An abscessed tooth is a painful infection at the root of a tooth or between the gum and a tooth. It's most commonly caused by severe tooth decay. Other causes of tooth abscess are trauma to the tooth, such as when it is broken or chipped, and gingivitis or gum disease. These problems can cause openings in the tooth enamel, which allows bacteria to infect the center of the tooth (called the pulp). The infection may also spread from the root of the tooth to the bones supporting the tooth.

Avatar n tn Some doctors may opt to put you on antibiotics first to reduce the swelling then remove the tooth. Other doctors may decide to remove the tooth first to get rid of the source of infection and then help promote healing by being placed on antibiotics. I was taught to do the antibiotics first then to remove the teeth afterwards in school but when I did my residency, I was taught the opposite. I think either way is fine and the results are about the same.
Avatar n tn Hi...to reduce pain and swelling you can used an ice pack wrapped in a towel, and take Tyleno, Advil or Motrin for the pain.

Avatar n tn Has your dog had a recent injury, or cut there? If so it might have got infected. But a likely cause of this would be a tooth abscess. He/she needs to see a vet.
Avatar n tn If there was a root canal done in the above tooth? In few cases root canals can fail due to branching and convolutions of the tooth roots. See your dentist at the earliest. Treatment will be specific based on the cause. Best luck and regards!
Avatar n tn t want to do anything about the tooth until the infection is gone - to reduce the risk of the infection spreading during work on the tooth. So the sooner you can get the infection under control, the sooner your dentist will be able to fix your tooth so hopefully this won't happen again. I can empathisize with how you're feeling - I've had tooth abscesses in the past and they are VERY painful!
Avatar n tn Hi, I had a toothache in my back molar for about a week and a half. A constant throbing sharp shooting terrible toothache from a really decayed back tooth. About a week ago I started taking Erythromycin and have been taking it as told. Now today my gums and cheek is swollen. The Dentist switched my antibiotic to Clindamycin and I just started taking that because he doesn't think the other one was working....no kidding.
Avatar m tn The gum above the tooth is also perfectly fine. I had an abscess tooth before (oddly the exact same tooth just on the opposite side) about 2 years ago. The constant pressure feeling is the same but the swelling looks slightly different. When tapping my abscessed tooth there was incredible pain but now when i tap this tooth the pain hardly changes. The gum tissue above my abscessed tooth was also very sensitive, dark pink, and began to develop a boil. There is no sign of that this time.
Avatar f tn I have a tooth Abscess and I went to a doctor who gave me some antibiotics but they made me really sick so I went to another doctor and they gave me different antibiotics and I have been taking them for 3 days now but the swelling has not gone down. I am allergic to penicillin so whenever I get antibiotics they give me special antibiotics.I am just wondering if this is normal not to see the swelling go down yet.

Avatar f tn The only possible reason for this abscess that I can think of is that about a year ago, my front tooth got the corner chipped off. Please respond asap... I am a worrier!! This discussion is related to dental abscess.
Avatar n tn I went to see the dentist this past Saturday. I have a tooh abscess - with swelling in the cheek area. My dentist started me on antibiotics. My question is, how long will it take for the swelling to go down? It's been approximately 48 hours and it still feels about the same size. What would happen if it were to burst? At what point would I need to go to the ER.
1629677 tn?1299655604 I had a wisdom tooth pulled and the night I had it pulled my cheeck was the size of a tennis ball, I went to the ER 3 days later and they said I had an abscess, im on antibiotics and I want to know if that will take the swelling away and if thats all I have to do or will I have to get it drained?
Avatar f tn It is not hard and not terribly sensitive today. What could have happened to cause this swelling and do you think the abscess has not been completely resolved? I do have a follow up in 3 days, but am very anxious about what may have happened, especially since the swelling goes below my jaw and the tooth worked was an upper one...
Avatar f tn I went to the dentist for significant facial swelling, and was diagnosed with the abscess. The swelling has gone down, however I now have a pus pocket on my gum above my molars. It's only painful when I touch it, but I can see the swelling under my cheek when I smile. Since I'm already on Amoxicillin, can I pop the abscess using a sterilized needle? It's Friday night, and the dentist won't be in until Monday...PLEASE HELP!!
Avatar f tn ) Afterwards, pressure sensitivity improved but gum swelled on the linqual side. Dentist treated with Cavitron and said tooth would need to be extracted if swelling continued. Four days ago, had tooth 14 prepped for crown. All okay first day, then cheek and jaw started swelling and have not improved. No pain in tooth 14. Made an independent appt with Oral Surgeon but can't get in for three weeks. Any ideas/suggestions? And, why would tooth 14 exacerbate 29? Or, is it a separate problem?
Avatar f tn I do have some facial swelling but it seems to be going down since the abscess opened up. I will watch out for a fever but I haven't gotten any additional symptoms. Thank for the advice!
Avatar f tn The pain at the site of the tooth is gone but there is still a lot of pressure above the tooth (#14). What do you think may be going on? Thanks in advance for your view & ideas.
Avatar f tn I have mod-advanced periodontal disease and developed a PA abscess and cyst in 7 months which caused severe pain and swelling that required extraction. How did it come about? Is it from dental decay combined with periodontal disease? It was tooth 26 with over 7 mm gum pocket and 50% mobility.. Just wondering if I could have saved it earlier with maybe a root canal? Hope to hear from some expert.
Avatar m tn Hello...a week ago I went to my dentist with excruciating tooth pain. He identified the issue as a tooth infection and scheduled a root canal for after the infection is cured. I had no swelling at the time. The pain lessened but was still noticeable since beginning the antibiotic (amoxicillin). This morning I woke up with the pain mostly gone from the tooth; however, my jaw is now swollen with what feels like a hard lump and is sensitive to being touched.
