Common Questions and Answers about Abscess symptoms dogs

abscess

Avatar n tn My dog has what seems to be an abscess on his neck. It's underneath on the side. I only noticed when petting him. It doesn't seem to hurt him, he still has his appetite, and is as playful as ever. Do you think this is something I can treat by cleaning with a warm compress and peroxide?
Avatar f tn I have noticed with the blood work since 2011 that she keeps getting this infection, I know from her white blood count. Since Aug. 31st she also had an abscess near the bottom of her throat/chest that opened up itself and drained not puss but clear liquid and blood. I had her on Amoxacillian (sorry not sure how to spell that) 500 mg twice a day for a month before Aug. 31st because she had a bad cough.
Avatar f tn Vaseline isn't the best bet for this area. It's not water soluble and can trap bacteria underneath it. Expressing impacted anal glands is kind of like popping a zit. It's going to be irritated for a few days, and of course, the dog is going to lick any irritated area. I've found Dermachlor Flush Plus (available from the vet) to be a great antiseptic and antifungal rinse that also prevents most dogs from licking an injury.
Avatar f tn Were you treating the abscess on your own or under the care of a veterinarian? My vote is that the abscess was far worse than what was visible on the surface, and likely needed surgical drainage. Antibiotics can do only so much, and if they weren't specific for the particular bacteria strain at work, they would do no good at all. I'm guessing that the infection got into her blood stream (sepsis) and she finally died of multiple organ failure.
Avatar f tn Yes, impacted anal glands are common in dogs, and they usually do the "butt scootin' boogie" to advertise their discomfort. While I'm glad your friend is willing and able to express them, it's still a good idea to have a vet or licensed groomer do this - particularly if it happens frequently. Sometimes impacted glands can eventually abscess and cause a lot of pain and mess and the dog will need antibiotics to help it heal.
Avatar f tn There are a number of potential causes for pain around the time of eating but the most serious one is a retrobulbar abscess, or an abscess that forms in the space behind the eye. These can cause serious problems fairly quickly, including blindness and in severe cases, death. In most cases, dogs with retrobulbar abscesses are really pained by having their mouths opened -- some dogs refuse to allow this and others just scream when someone attempts to open the mouth beyond a certain point.
Avatar f tn Oh gosh it is badly infected and it is an abscess,it will get bigger and bigger.Your vet should have a payment plan.If no go at all can you get hold of any antibiotics anywhere ??? to fight infection.
Avatar n tn because only you know whether you think this needs a trip to the vet or not, and even possibly, a course of antibiotics, as it is just possible that an abscess, treated wrongly, can lead to complications or even septicemia. To really be on the safe side, a quick trip to the vet (this will probably not cost very much at all) -may be the best plan. Don't be upset if what's left after the pus is all out is an angry-looking dark red hole.
Avatar f tn Today my boyfriend and I took our dogs to the local creek and when we got home he checked them for ticks. While inspecting out 12 yr old short hair husky cross he noticed a huge swollen bump on her inner thigh. It had a white head on it. He grabbed gauze and popped it, but you can still feel stuff in there and around it is very swollen. she doesn't seem to be in pain. she is rolling around in the grass right now..and she is walking and was swimming just fine. what could this be?
Avatar n tn I'm with krndhn. He probabably has impacted anal glands that are now leaking a bit of fluid all the time. The material in the glands is extremely foul, and the smell gets worse the longer it remains unexpressed. Some dogs never have this trouble, but it's not at all uncommon and easily remedied. You'll want to have your vet do the expression - it's usually quite cheap - and make sure that he isn't developing an anal abscess.
Avatar m tn As i was grooming my husky i found a knot the size of a golfball maybe a little bigger sitting on her right side at the base of her tail it was not there a day ago and is causing her to be uncomfortable she dont mind if we look at it as lng as no one touches..she does play hard with other dogs so im unsure if it is from her maybe falling or being tripped by another dog.
Avatar n tn I noticed my dogs face near her cheek is swollen and her neck on the same side is also swollen, its soft in her neck not hard. It wasnt a gradual growth i just notices it last night. Shes acting completly normal shell let me touch it. She does have bad teeth but my vet has never been able to check her mouth for as long as ive had her. I adopted her and she not very nice with other people (we have to muzzle her and sedate her prior to going to the vet). Any ideas of what could be causing this?
1508589 tn?1289920064 something is tearing my dogs ear and my dog has a hole on her head were she has lost her hair dont know what is going on with my dog
Avatar n tn Since it came up so quickly, it's probably an insect bite of some kind. If he has no other symptoms, you can try giving him benadryl and see if the swelling comes down. Benadryl can be given to dogs at 1 mg per pound of body weight. It wouldn't hurt to give your vet a call for some advice as well, particularly if your dog is already on other medications.
980967 tn?1253064195 s small, about how small? Does it look sore or inflamed? Does he have any other symptoms, like tiredness, sleepiness, loss of appetite -all of which could mean he's in pain?
Avatar m tn It's possible it's cancer. It could also be a pocket infection forming. I'd sugest having it checked out if it doesn't resolve (break and empty) in a few days to a week.
Avatar n tn Hi Maggie, Have you checked your dogs teeth? Have you noticed bad breath? Your dog could have an abscess. Since this has been going on for 3 days I would take him to the vet. If you haven't changed his food and you know of nothing he could have ate, I really would take him to your vet as this is unusal behavior.
Avatar f tn Popping the abscessed lesion on your dogs leg relieved the pain due to the swelling of the skin and allowed the abscess to drain, which is something that your vet would have done under more sterile conditions. If you already know that the cause of the abscess is due to a traumatic wound, than oral antibiotics is probably all that is additionally required.
Avatar m tn We took him to the emergency vet, and they kept him a few days and took blood samples and were able to open his jaw to see if he had a tooth abscess and they took xrays also. He was given antibiotics and steroids. They said they couldn't find any cause or problem, and was very frustrating for us because not only was that visit and procedures over $1,000 the swelling is now returning. The swelling did go down while he was on steroids. He is eating and running about normally.
Avatar f tn The most frequent presenting symptoms are headache, drowsiness, confusion, seizures, hemiparesis or speech difficulties together with fever with a rapidly progressive course. The symptoms and findings depend largely on the specific location of the abscess in the brain.Endocarditis, frontal sinus defect, gram negative bacilli Brain Abscess Following Klebsiella pneumoniae Septicemia are some of the causes.
Avatar n tn What your describing is probably a bad tooth, gingivitis, or some form of dental disease.....Statically, most dogs by the age of 3, have some form of Dental Disease..... You need to get your guy to a Vet for a Dental.....During the dental, your doctor will be able to determine if there is an abscess or a tooth that needs to be extracted..... Just with humans, dental disease is quite painful....That's why your guy is not feeling well....When it gets worse, he will quit eating......
480331 tn?1310403529 She is one of the most high-spirited dogs I have ever seen, loves to play, give kisses, etc...I have noticed when I kiss her nose or touch anywhere near her snout, she yelps in distress. I try to open her mouth to see if her gums are swollen, but all appears normal. Speifically the region around her nose seems to be very sensitive. Any idea or suggestion what may be wrong? Thank you!!
Avatar m tn I assume she never had a reaction before? Was the Lepto in the shot? Many dogs react to the Lepto vaccine. What is your Vet going to do a blood test to check? Why did he prescribe antibiotics? Some dogs might have some type of reaction for 24-48 hours after a shot. This may be an abscess at the injection site. Did your Vet mention that? I had one dog years ago and a cat that got abscesses at the injection sites. Both ended up having to be opened up, a drain put in and were on antibiotics.
Avatar f tn the antibiotics you have given ... are they intended for humans or dogs? Some antibiotics can be used on dogs, such as Ampicillin and other penicillin-based antibiotics (which are good for tooth abscesses). However, there are two things you should understand. Firstly, dogs can have some considerable side-effects, including diarrhea, because the drug changes the bacteria population in the gut.
