Common Questions and Answers about Abscess in the brain

abscess

Avatar n tn A brain abscess is a collection of immune cells, pus, and other material in the brain, usually from a bacterial or fungal infection. Swelling and inflammation develop in response to this infection and eventually creates a mass and this may put pressure on delicate brain tissue and can block the blood vessels of the brain. Symptoms to watch out for include: changes in mental status, decreased movement or sensation, fever and chills, headache, seizures, stiff neck and vomiting.
Avatar m tn Did the dentist finish the job, and the next step was a post and core and crown? The last one third of the canal is sealed in a root canal, and then a temporary filling or permanent filling goes into the lower part of the canal. If that has fallen out, then the canal could be filled with food debris and could cause decay and irritate the gums.
Avatar f tn Over the past couple days I developed an extremely painful abscess. In an attempt to clean my mouth using coconut oil the abscess burst. I believe I didn't swallow any of the liquid leaking out and throughly rinsed my mouth with salt water and then some hydrogen peroxide. I will be receiving insurance in about 2 weeks from my new job so I am hoping I can hold off going to the dentist till then.
Avatar f tn The most frequent presenting symptoms are headache, drowsiness, confusion, seizures, hemiparesis or speech difficulties together with fever with a rapidly progressive course. The symptoms and findings depend largely on the specific location of the abscess in the brain.Endocarditis, frontal sinus defect, gram negative bacilli Brain Abscess Following Klebsiella pneumoniae Septicemia are some of the causes.
Avatar f tn This may be brought about by a break in the skin/areola, producing a superimposed infection and thus abscess formation. If there is an abscess, incision and drainage must be done and the specimen is sent to the pathologist for evaluation. Good luck.
Avatar n tn For weeks my back tried to break itself until a doctor found a brain abscess the size and volume of a golf ball on the left side of my brain. I was rushed to surgery which removed the majority of the abscess via a cranyotomy. That portion of my brain was damaged and said to have been destroyed by the abscess.
Avatar f tn I’m extremely worried that it could be a major infection that can travel to the brain and cause brain injury or damage. I’m wondering if anyone knows any antibiotics that could help until I can afford to see a dentist/specialist. This has been the worst time in my life and I’m having trouble with how I should proceed. Cost is an issue. Perhaps someone out there has been in a similar situation and can provide guidance. Thank you.
Avatar f tn But not no where as bad as ankles would be but similar to. What kind of fluid would be retanded in the left temporial lobe and above the eye? All can I think of is it may be blood? What do you think?
Avatar n tn My girlfriend has migraine headaches, (her father does also) and I know that a lot of people get them, but my girlfriend has something more serious. She blacked out last week out of nowhere and complained about a stiff neck, dizziness, and headache afterward. She recently had an MRI and they said something about a Nodule or inflammation, maybe growth in the brain..
Avatar f tn So I have severe hypochondria (health anxiety) and I am so so scared of getting a brain infection/brain abscess. I have heard one of the ways of this happening is by an infection in the ear. Now about a month ago I had Otitis Externa (outer ear infection) which was really painful and took about 2 weeks to completely clear up. I have really itchy ears at the moment because I have eczema inside so I am hoping thats all it is.

Avatar f tn s recovery so it was the most painful thing for me. The IGM was bearable until the abscess started to appear.
619150 tn?1247048274 Probably not a literal infection in the brain but in the facial spaces of your head. Or possibly in the jaw bone but causing some pressure in the sinus area as well. Again, I would find a dentist immediately or go to the ER for this chronic abscess. At least get some antibiotics to help prevent the spread of bacteria. Contact your local dental society for a list of dentists which take medicaid.
Avatar f tn m worried that this pain on the same side of my head is maybe a sign the infection could be spreading to the brain ill be seeing the dentist in a few days but its been this way a while say a month no insurance makes this hard and I've been using peroxide and a mouth astringent to try and keep the infection down till then...
Avatar m tn Hello Recently I have had two surgeries to remove an abscess in my groin/left thigh. The First operation occurred two weeks before the second. I'm now 8 days post second op and the wound is healing well and I thought all was going to be ok but the nurse who comes daily to pack and redress my wound is very concerned about the large approx 8cm long hard lump that surrounds the wound. She applied pressure and squeezed it alot yesterday and now the whole region is painful again.
Avatar f tn Your grandmother should receive a pelvic exam to determine the cause and extent of the abscess to determine the correct treatment,a small sample may also be taken to rule out cancer beings she is post menopausal. I don't know what kind of health care they have in Uganda, but if she is in this much pain this should have already been evaluated and treated with antibiotics and possibly drained.
Avatar m tn It's been a while since I've had a dental check up. I would say around 8 months now. I've used a mouth wash on it and it seems to have smoothen out a bit but its still there and looks white. I will go and have a dental check up as soon as I return home next week. What exactly is an abscess? is it somehting to worry about? One more question could this abscess have anything to do with my jaw feeling a bit week on the same side?
Avatar f tn A neurologist diagnoses MS. MS can have inflammation and or nerve damage in the brain, optic nerve, or spinal cord. Inflammation is a general term. In MS it is inflammation of the nerves caused by MS attacking them. All inflammation of the brain is not MS. It could be infection. A easy way to rule MS in or out is to have a family doctor do a neurological exam. Any doctor can do it. It is reflexes and such.
Avatar n tn 5 years ago, I had to receive two brain operations, the first being a brain abscess which resulted from a previous mastoid surgery. the second brain surgery was my lower brain had sunken down into my ear area and from that received bacterial meningitis. I was told that I have scarring on the brain, and was wondering would could potentially arise health wise in years to come as I was never fully informed on anything due to young age at the time and routine scans stopped over 2 years ago.
Avatar f tn More specifically it is called Amoebic Liver Abscess. The abscess, if it is one, is relative small and can be cured by antibiotics. No need to go in for aspiration. It is 100% curable. Also go in for a blood test along with a liver function test to test the levels of the enzymes. But, FIRST consult a good gastroenterologist. I wouldnt worry if I were you.
Avatar n tn Antibiotics treat the infection that has caused the abscess. The specific antibiotic depends on what infectious organism has caused the abscess. Whether the abscess is drained or not, antibiotics are always used to treat the underlying infection. Needle aspiration of the abscess to remove the infectious fluid. This can be done on superficial abscesses that can be reached by a needle and syringe. For those abscesses inaccessible by a needle, surgical drainage is done.
Avatar m tn Abscesses can also affect the brain, kidneys, liver (hepatic abscess), lungs, teeth (dental abscess), and tonsils (peritonsillar abscess). Inflammation surrounding hair follicles can lead to the formation of abscesses. Skin abscesses are often referred to as boils. Unlike other infections, antibiotics alone will not cure an abscess. In general, abscesses must open and drain to improve.
702286 tn?1239011660 chances are whatever bacteria that is festering there is not susceptible to the antibiotic you have. Many of the patients we see in the E.R. that come in with abcesses related to injecting are MRSA positive. (a very tolerant bacteria that is only killed by one or 2 antibitotics.) (Methicillin-Resistant-Staphylococcus-Aureus). You can google it and find out more info. Only way to be sure what bacteria it is, is to have a culture. Like theeagle said, you need to see an MD.
Avatar f tn Hey everyone, so I’ve had a tooth abscess for YEARS now (since my junior year of high school) and I’ve gone a couple times to the dentist and have gotten a round of antibiotics but never went back to get the tooth pulled after finishing the antibiotics, over the years I’ve been able to pop the abscess though it wasn’t very much puss that came out at all, so I figured I was ok as long as I was able to drain it.
Avatar m tn I have a root abscess from a broken tooth on the upper jaw. A week ago I had a severe pain on that tooth and I started taking Amoxicillin 500mg as my dentist prescribed in case of infection when he opened it to clean the roots. The next day the part next to my nose got swollen but the pain has gone. After 5 days on Amoxicillin the swell is not visible but I can feel it when I open my mouth. The thing that get me worried is that slight pressure feeling on my cheek and the upper eyelid.
Avatar m tn He says it is getting better, but for some reason his cheek on the other side of his mouth got swollen (maybe unrelated from biting it) and he says the area of the abscess is still a little irritated even after being on antibiotics today. The abscess was caused by food that got into a pocket between his erupting wisdom tooth and gum (the gum got cleaned out). He was never unable to open his mouth or talk, so far no swollen lymph nodes or anything like that.
1666982 tn?1445198395 No. Ask your surgeon about your specific situation. Although this is probably unrelated, a pelvic abscess from the process would be a long shot to connect the two.
