Avatar f tn Could be a boil, abscess, or canker sore. It can't be diagnosed from a picture. If it persists or grows, you'll need to see a dentist. If it's an abscess, antibiotics will be required.
Avatar m tn My cheek right above the tooth and next to my nostril has also swelled up. The tooth is perfectly fine, no decay of any kind. The gum above the tooth is also perfectly fine. I had an abscess tooth before (oddly the exact same tooth just on the opposite side) about 2 years ago. The constant pressure feeling is the same but the swelling looks slightly different. When tapping my abscessed tooth there was incredible pain but now when i tap this tooth the pain hardly changes.
Avatar n tn Other than this he could also be having a gum infection, an infection of the skin of face, a boil or abscess or infection of the jaw bone. It is difficult to diagnose this on net. Please consult his pediatrician and his dentist as soon as possible (read immediately!). Meanwhile please give him acetaminophen to make the pain tolerable. Take care!

Avatar m tn The longer you wait, the more risk you take with an abscess and the lower the success of your treatment as the infection will spread and cause further harm.
Avatar n tn I work in the dental field and see things like this periodically. If infection is present...ie a gum boil, swelling, fistula tract, ect...then an antibiotic will help. You may also try taking anti-inflammatory pain med..like advil, etc...or have a pain med prescribed. Most importantly please check with a dentist, doctor, etc... b/c you definitely need to address the tooth. Remember you can always get a second opinion on the rct treatment.
Avatar n tn It is possible that acute abscess has been developing. It is best to get an appropriate evaluation and treatment done. If there was a root canal done in the above tooth? In few cases root canals can fail due to branching and convolutions of the tooth roots. See your dentist at the earliest. Treatment will be specific based on the cause. Best luck and regards!
Avatar m tn I have had a smallish (maybe 2 cm in diameter) skin abscess or infected cyst on my back next to my cervical spine for the last 2 weeks which doesn't seem to be getting bigger or coming to a head (I tried squeezing it thinking it was a pimple at first.) When I touch it, it feels soft/puffy as though there's some fluid under it (same as a gum boil) and it's no longer hot/painful, just itchy sometimes.
Avatar m tn Standard treatment of a tooth abscess is to drain pus and then disinfect and fill tooth, or remove tip of root (an apicectomy) if it cannot be disinfected, or take the tooth out. Avatar n tn Hello, This persistent abscess that does not get cleared with antibiotics is called Parulis as this elevated nodule is actually an opening of fistulous tract from some chronic abscess either in association with tooth (periapical abscess) or gum abscess or could be sinus in your case. As I can not do physical exam hence can not say for sure about the origin of the abscess. It needs x-ray and second opinion of a dentist who can examine.
Avatar f tn Hi, lump in the gums above and adjacent to the teeth most commonly can be tooth abscess or fistula opening due to infected tooth. You may just check out any frank cavity or food imapaction area in related teeth to the swelling. In such case you may need antibiotics and root canal treatment of the affected tooth with the help of a dentist. Other possibilties could be pyogenic granuloma, fibroma, periodontal abscess etc. Check out with local dentist to confirm.
Avatar m tn A boil, also referred to as a skin abscess, is a localized infection deep in the skin. A boil generally starts as a reddened, tender area. Over time, the area becomes firm and hard. Eventually, the center of the abscess softens and becomes filled with pus. Finally, the pus "forms a head," which can be surgically opened or spontaneously drain out through the surface of the skin. Boil on buttocks is usually due to plugged sweat glands that become infected or by an ingrown hair.
Avatar m tn When I asked what was wrong he said it could be a few things and prescribed Augmentin 825 mg twice daily and Naproxenum 250 mg twice daily for a week. I asked if it could be a perianal abscess or a hematoma and if it should be lanced and drained. He said told me it is best to wait and see if it gets worse and if it does go back to a doctor and have it looked at again.
Avatar f tn 2 days ago, I had a dental abscess in the upper right side of my mouth, between the tooth and the gum, and it was slowly draining from a hole in my gum... So, I decided to try and squeeze some of the infection out myself and as I was in the process of doing so, the abscess busted and drained internally (into my cheek). My face started swelling immediately and in about 15 seconds, it had tripled in size!
Avatar n tn t a big deal. If the boil is large enough or is starting to form into an abscess, your doctor will first numb the boil and the surrounding area and then make a small incision to allow the pus to drain. The incision is then usually packed with gauze and an antiseptic to allow further drainage. In the meantime, till you see your doctor, use warm damp compresses for 20 minutes three to four times a day as it may help draw the boil out. Take care....
Avatar n tn They said I have Periodontal Disease, I am wondering if this tooth can be saved by the gum specialist. Is sugical gum treatment can save my tooth? Can I save my tooth for serveral more years? If I have to extract my tooth, since is the lower back tooth (last one) will it effect my facial structure? any side effect? Thanks.
Avatar f tn If a person presents with say gum disease, decay and defective restorations has no symptoms of pain, or abscesses etc and for whatever reason leaves a tooth untreated for say approx 6-7 months then suddenly develops an abscess with severe pain. Is it probable that during that period without the treatment caused it to become worse and then develop the abscess which required an extraction? When do teeth with cavities become unsaveable that require extraction.
Avatar f tn Bacterial skin infections can be spread by shared cosmetics or washcloths, close human contact, or by contact with pus from a boil or carbuncle. Treatment includes antibiotics and incision and drainage and do not touch or pick them up. Also apply warm compresses on the lump. If however the symptoms persist then get lymphadenopathy ruled out from your doctor.
Avatar n tn I was told by my dentist that I have an abcess above a tooth that I have already had a root canal done on 18years ago and that I have to see an endodontics for treatment. First I would like to know if they are going to do another root canal or if they're going to perform surgery through my gum to remove this ball of infection? And can only an Endodonitcs fix this problem or can a oral surgeon do this as well? If they go through my gum this would be surgry right?
