Avatar m tn Unfortunately, one of these became irritated, then infected, and then burst! She had an abscess and peritonitis and almost died. The most effective thing I've found (recommended by my gastroenterologist) is MiraLax, which can now be purchased over the counter. It is a powder you mix in a beverage, but unlike bulk fiber laxatives, it actually has something that causes the bowels to move. I put it in juice and there is absolutely no change in the taste of the juice.
Avatar f tn laprascopic surgery and IV antibiotics - hoped it would settle August 2010 - partial colectomy (anterior resection) to remove massive abscess. Formation of temporary loop ileostomy September 2010 - got fit enough to run local 10k. October 2010 - reversal of ileostomy - didn't go to well. Paralytic ileus and huge bloating. Hospital 7 days. Since then have struggled with massive bloating, constipation, weight gain (12 lbs) nausea etc.

Avatar n tn It sounds like a chain reaction of complications from the surgery occurred. The risk of perforation and abscess formation is present with any abdominal surgery. Sometimes this can be difficult to detect at first - hence the delay in diagnosis. Prolonged hospital stay would increase the risk of hospital-born infections, such as C Diff. This is normally treated with an extended course of antibiotics - like something like Flagyl or Vancomycin.
Avatar f tn LARGE INTESTINE Also known as the large bowel, it is responsible for the final stages of water absorption which leads to the formation of a solid stool from liquid intestinal chyme from the small intestine. It houses a number of species of colonic bacteria which are necessary for normal functioning but can be pathological if there is an overgrowth or pathogenic bacteria replace it. The large intestine includes the cecum (junction between small and large intestine), colon, rectum and anus.
