Common Questions and Answers about Abscess drainage fever

abscess

Avatar n tn Depending on the degree of infection and drainage at the abscess site is the reason for the drains. If there is a lot, then they will put a drain in until the drainage slows down a bit. I hope this helps.
Avatar m tn I had surgery on a perirectal abscess about 7 weeks ago. For the past 5 days I have been running a low grade fever 99-100.4 on average and experiencing random rectal pain in the same area. I had some bleeding from the site then the fever began the next day. I thought the area was completely healed as I have had been released by my Doctor after 3 weeks. Is it possible for it to reoccur?
Avatar m tn After major gallbladder surgery, 3 times size, infected, e-coli, after 7 days sent home even with constant low grade fever. 12 days home with low grade/high grade fever called Surgeon had Ct scan revealed 5.5x3.5x4.5 cm gallbladder e-coli fossa abscess. Interventional radiologist placed a french drain while i was under conscious sedation during CT Scan. Released after 4 days of Flagyl & Cipro. 1657910 tn?1302375661 My doctor ordered cultures of the fluid to see what grows. Nothing every grows in my case. Yes it is a new abscess that delevoped in the same spot as the abscess that was surgically removed in Dec 2010. My surgeon did tell me it could happen again. So I wasn't to shock that it developed again just bummed out that it happen again. I was very happy when the surgeon did say I wouldn't have to have surgery again. I don't want to have to heal from a open wound again.
Avatar n tn ) After feeling the scalple slicing open my abscess, then the doctor found a previous abscess under that one and had to slice it open as well. After all of this, it was time to begin packing the wound with this stringgy gauze filled with antibiotic by using a small pair of sissors to do it. I felt everything! It felt like he was poking the abscess with the sharp sissor and then dragging it around the inside edges of the wound. Another very painful and tramatic experience!
Avatar n tn It went away in a few days. She said its an abscess. I got another one now and its really small comapared to the one I had before but its on the right side this time she prescribed me dicloxacillin again and said it should go away soon. This time it didn't need to be popped because its really small and donts hurt at all like the first one. Hope this helps but I do suggest to anyone to not rely on a fourm / website for info to go to a doctor or emergency room to get it taken care of.
Avatar f tn Any ideas what a swollen area near left kidney along with a two week long low grade fever (even on antibiotics) could indicate.
578743 tn?1218557817 The first week and a half with high fever and no cause. She was put on several antibiotics, but the gland abscessed. She just had surgery yesterday and they drained it. The doctor said that the lymph tissue was dying. They performed cultures and biopsy. The only time she is sick since birth, it has to do with the lymph nodes and nothing else. She has had epstein barr virus before. Could this be something serious? Her CBC came back with high WBC, 24,000. High neutrophils: 80,000.
Avatar n tn I have had 6 surgeries for drainage of abscesses and fistulas. I am currently on Remicade maintenance 300 mg every 8 wks. I was hospitalized 3 1/2 weeks ago for what I new was another abcess brewing. MRI revealed (8 mm abscess - they chose to treat with antibiotics and not drain, I opted to go home, after the 3 day stay. I was hospitalized again for three days this past week for the same thing...rectal pain, nausea, low grade fever, MRI now revealed (2) 8 mm abscesses.
Avatar n tn I initially thought it was a dental abscess, but I am not so sure anymore. No fever, or chills. I have had some sinus issues for a while now burning eyes, sensitivity to light, one sided sore throat, and phantom tooth pain. All of theses symptoms seem to come, and go on a weekly basis. I have also spoken to a ENT about these problems. The throat he diagnosed as GERD, but the prilosec hasn't seemed to help. Sore throat comes, and goes.
Avatar n tn If theres a fistula (lil gum boil), sometimes warm salt water will help pull the pus out of the abscess. Otherwise, your dentist can perform an incision and drainage but I wouldn't recommend that route at all. The root canal was done and everything should be fine now. Good luck with hygiene school! Maybe I'll see you at some ADA functions. Best wishes.
Avatar n tn I had mastitis while breastfeeding that turned into an abscess. Had to have incscion and drainage done. Mine was packed and I had to go back a couple times to have the packing changed out. Mine didn't require a drainage tube, they left part of the packing sticking out of the incision which works like a wick I guess and it drained by itself. (By the way I had a natural birth, no drugs and giving birth to the baby hurt less than the abscess and i/d did.
Avatar m tn TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT THINGS... abscess: An abscess is a localized collection of pus that generally develops in response to infection. An abscess is typically painful, and it appears as a swollen area that is warm to the touch. The skin surrounding an abscess typically appears pink or red. Abscesses can develop in many parts of the body, but they usually involve the skin surface.
Avatar f tn The left side of my face is very slightly swollen. The lid/ brow area of both eye is moderately swollen as well. I have no fever, no stuffiness, no drainage no cold or flu for many months. I have a bad case of episcleritis for weeks and have been taking 800mg of ibuprofen and prednisolone drops in eyes every 2 hours. I had a CT and the Dr assistant only said there was slight evidence of sinusitis and they may prescribe antibiotics.
Avatar n tn She also has a 100.3 degree fever. The Dr. is treating her with antibiotics. He circled the area and said if it gets past that, then she needs to be rushed to emergency room for surgery. I am confused. i don't know what it is. It hurts her really bad and she can't move arm. This was her pediatrician. Should we follow up with a dermatologist? Should we worry or jsut wait on antibiotics to kick in? Thanks!
Avatar m tn Because the bacteria have a safe haven in the abscess cavity the antibiotics can't get to them. Draining the abscess allows the antibiotics to take care of the surrounding tissue infection.
Avatar n tn This is an emergency and needs to be treated with IV antibiotics. Sometimes it warrants incision and drainage of the abscess. It is also an indication for tonsillectomy. Please contact your concerned physician at the earliest to rule out this condition. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn - Medications were switch to Vancomycin and Clenomycin to cover options for addressing the abscess. - No Fever past two days Nov 25 - low grade Fever spiked, but was treated with Tylenol, could have masked true peak - No growth from blood culture yet. - Dr. Suspect fever could be from staph. Avatar f tn Painful breast with redness, nipple discharge and fever indicates a breast abscess. Please consult your PCP or gynecologist immediately. You need an incision and drainage of the pus with an antibiotic cover. Please do not delay. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar m tn No redness, swelling, pain, or fever has every occured. 1st thought to be an abscess and was put on antibiotics and they tried to drain it with no improvement and no drainage. Have had an US done and abscess, lipoma, and dropped lymph node were ruled out. She also had a CBC done and it was completely normal. It is measuring at some places up to 9cm. We are seeing a surgeon (waiting on referral) but really need insight on this about what it could be. Please don't hold back. She is only 10.
1670196 tn?1306844845 On 5/9 it was taken out because they said it wasn't an abscess it was a hematoma or a seroma (the drainage tube had not drained anything and had caused A LOT of pain). On 5/11 I was discharged saying that the hematoma was 50% smaller than it had been on 5/5 and would probably continue to drain vaginally like it had been and that it should take care of itself within the next month or so.

Avatar n tn Antibiotics treat the infection that has caused the abscess. The specific antibiotic depends on what infectious organism has caused the abscess. Whether the abscess is drained or not, antibiotics are always used to treat the underlying infection. Needle aspiration of the abscess to remove the infectious fluid. This can be done on superficial abscesses that can be reached by a needle and syringe. For those abscesses inaccessible by a needle, surgical drainage is done.

Avatar f tn After a week in the hospital, I was sent home with a picc-line in my arm and a drainage tube for the abscess. I have been taking antibiotics vancomycin and Invanz daily through infusion. I have been home 10 days and the drainage is now cloudy light pink as opposed to the dark pink with clumps while I was in the hospital. I see improvement, but my question that can't seem to be answered is where did the infection and abscess come from?
Avatar f tn As of yesterday 8/20 her eye was extremely swollen and there was drainage (pus) in her eye. This morning she woke up and her eye was sealed shut... Warm compress assisted with helping it to open. Saw pedi opthamologist today; she said she has developed cellulities and prescribed augmentin BID, continue with warm compresses and erythromycin. I asked about surgery she said normally not an option for children. My daughters eye is so swollen and it looks so uncomfortable.
Avatar m tn If you are still not responding, then you may have developed an abscess which may need drainage. Please ask your doctor if you need a MRI. Take care! The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you. The advice may not be completely correct for you as the doctor cannot examine you and does not know your complete medical history.
579258 tn?1250652943 Please excuse my graphic description .. but the upper abscess had purulent drainage (pus) that rolled out of it and completely saturated a 4 x 4 piece of gauze. Now, just to be clear, I am able to handle a great deal of pain. Having lived and worked with migraines all my life, having given birth and had gallbladder attacks and surgery, I can take a lot. Even at the height of this abscess, the highest pain level was felt to be a 6. Last night upon arrival, my pain scale was a 7.
