abilify

1564087 tn?1308947518 Only side effect I really noticed from Abilify was weight gain but this was because it made me start eating every 3 hours and become obsessed with food I guess. I take Abilify for psychotic symptoms associated with my diagnosis of schizophrenia.
585414 tn?1288941302 Abilify works in a manner somewhat different from the other antipsychotics and Saphris was based on Abilify (Serotonin-Dopamine agonists) so it should have a similar side effect profile of having less sedation and less of a potential for weight gain and diabetes (though all current antipsychotics can cause this). If you want to know the full side effect profile as well as beneficial results go to the medication website.
Avatar n tn I'm a little confused. Your suffering a major clinical depression and your worried about gaining weight? When I was suffering from this disease at it's worst, even if taking an AD medication ment that my hair would fall out and would cause me to gain 400Lbs, I would have still taken it. That's how bad I wanted the pain to stop. They all have side effects without exception.
Avatar f tn None of the common adhd stimulant meds will cause weight gain and in fact might cause weight loss. All of these stimulant meds - when the correct dose is achieved - will limit impulsivity at school and at home. And, of course, if she starts doing better at school....her mood at home will also change. So do get back to me. I am really curious if she has actually tried any of the meds normally used to treat adhd. Best wishes.
Avatar f tn I am taking Abilify as an antipsychotic but have noticed lately that I might need an antidepressant. I am mostly depressed and down about all the weight gain that my antipsychotic has caused me. Lately I feel it has gotten worse to the point where I dont even want to go to the gym anymore becasue I feel fat. I am tryin got eat healthy and go to the gym but get so depressed over it. I really need to be honest with how I feel inside and not hide it.
Avatar f tn It does make sense to take Abilify during the day if its keeping a person awake at night as it can be activating. If not it won't make a difference as regards weight gain. Abilify is the least likely out of the antipsychotics to cause weight gain. I have posted about the antipsychotics in development that won't do this but they still are not approved medications yet. If you were diagnosed with bipolar with psychotic features you need an antipsychotic.
Avatar n tn When I looked up weight gain and bipolar medications, Abilify was at the bottom of the list for weight gain, Geodon people gained the least then Abilify. I'm on 2mg. of Abilify and in the begining you tend to feel sleepy, that's why they start you on it at bedtime. I would be surprised if Abilify caused a racing heart but you definately have to tell your doc about that. I was also on Wellbutrin and had to come off because it caused to much anxiety.
Avatar n tn zyprexa, risperdal, and seroquel. These medications did not cause me to overeat but, I believe that these drugs caused my metabolism to slow down and that is what caused the weight gain. I have found that when I stopped taking these meds that it took 8 to 10 months before I was able to see significant weight loss (and for my metabolism to readjust itself. I have always had a very healthy diet and get plenty of exercise even while on those antipsychotic drugs.
1052851 tn?1307741160 I read an article in BP Magazine about Zeldox, which had not yet been approved in Canada, but was in the US under Geldeon, and guaranteed the same results with less weight gain, so after some urging to my doctor, and her investigating it further, I started taking it, it had just been approved in Canada. I now only take 80mg of Zeldox (max. recommended) and am still taking the same amount of Cipralex.
Avatar f tn I would like to know the same question I have been taking bipolar medications for 15 years now all the ones I have been prescride have made me gain weight and a'lot Abilify Celexa not sure if for Bipolar or not have heard yes have read no Welbutron. Topamax I have been on 11 months I have lost 92 pounds on but I am on 400mg but I do not want to eat sleep my height to is only 4 10 1/2 I weight 286. Now Im 194. That was from the other bipolar medications.
Avatar f tn So I've been taking ability for less 2 months and have gained 20lbs... I'm 5'10" So it doesn't look as much but I'm getting depressed by it since I've always been on the small side (130lbs)... Has anyone else had a similar issue?
Avatar n tn Yes Seroquel like all currently available antipsychotics can cause weight gain and the potential of diabetes. I did gain weight on Seroquel as I did with other antipsychotics. You could ask your doctor about a specific diet that would help you cut back sugar and carbohydrates and help reduce weight and regular exercise is essential as well.
Avatar m tn Well my medication is going to have to be changed because of the reaction I had to it when it was increased and I didn't gain any weight on Geodon so I was wondering what other antipsychotics have a low chance of causing weight gain like Geodon because I used to be fat and got picked on a lot for it and don't want to go through that again.
Avatar n tn Abilify is the least likely out of the current generation of anti-psychotics to cause weight gain and diabetes but it still can occur.
Avatar f tn And I took Abilify in the past. Abilify is the antipsychotic least likely to cause weight gain but it can happen. Fish oil is good but better is the anti-cholesterol medication Lovaza derived from it which is used experimentally for bipolar. As per weight loss, I'd go on a standard diet or if its of concern go to a nutrionist. Its probably from the Abilify and usually not a problem but you would still have to keep within a normal weight limit in a healthy manner.
Avatar f tn All of the current generation of anti-psychotics including Abilify can cause weight gain and have a potential to create diabetes. Abilify is the least likely but it can happen (it has to a friend of me). As well there is the potential for tardive dyskinesia. For people with straight bipolar who gain weight Lamictal is an option. If one has bipolar with psychotic features then an anti-psychotic is neccessary obviously.
774805 tn?1235948571 what is the rang between bipolarism and schizophrenia. Usually bipolarism 15 and schizophrenia is 45mg.
Avatar n tn To the poster on Abilify -- you should research drugs and not just think about them because they're getting a lot of advertising. Abilify is only approved for depression when all other meds have failed. It has a high side effect profile, and is usually used for augmentation, not stand alone.
497950 tn?1255863927 I am bipolar I with mixed episodes. (Also with rapid cycling :) fun stuff...) Has anyone tried any medicines that didn't cause weight gain and didn't cost a fortune. I am on Abilify right now but I am very quickly going to have to change because my insurance isn't that great and it cost me $100. I am on Neurontin and Celexa right now which is great but I can still feel myself going up and down all the time.
1240654 tn?1268317515 My first experience with Abilify was an abnormal one (so please do not take this too seriously, as it seems I was an exception), since it threw me into a manic state; however, my Psychiatrist has come to the conclusion that I'm just wired completely different. After being weaned off the stuff for about a week, my Psychiatrist put me back on it, but a fourth of what I was taking.
Avatar f tn told me to take it at night before I went to bed and then I noticed weight gain from it and I stopped taking the meds all togther and lost the weight but felt horrible mentally and emotionally, so 6monts ago, I went back to the DR. and she put me back on lamictal 100 mg final dose, 25mg serquel at bedtime to sleep and 36mg of concerta a day and I feel great and have not gained any weight at all, actually seemed to have lost a few pounds and able to keep a lower weight. Maybe it is the abilify.
Avatar n tn ve had trouble tolerating Depakoate, Lamictal is another option which is less likely to cause weight gain and cognitive confusion. You could ask your psychiatrist about that. If you want to know what the specific side effects are and/or more information on any psychiatric medication a good website such as we have on the links page like "Depression Central" (for all mood disorders) is a good start.
