VMA is a 24 hour urine test. I have an adrenal adenoma. This test measures levels of certain hormones in the urine that are by products.

The plasma test measures the amount of hormone present in the blood at the moment of collection, while the urine test measures the amount excreted over a 24-hour period.

Just to add to the pheochromocytoma saga - I was tested for it within the last year and the best way is both the blood and 24 hour urine test. The urine test MUST be started when the surge in blood pressure or pulse rate begins and then continue collection for 24 hrs. You can't just do a 24 hour collection. mine came back negative as expected, but the doctor wanted to rule out that as a cause for my episodic rises in BP.

I am not a doctor, but it looks like you are out of range for the pheo testing. For cortisol, there is a 24 hour test for cortisol (ah, another jug!), 8am tests for cortisol and ACTH, and if the doc is good, they will test your adrenals for renin, aldosterone, dhea-s, and do more comprehensive testing of the entire endocrine system as cortisol pretty much can effect most hormones. Cortisol lowers testosterone - that is why I am thinking Cushing's. I don't know if a pheo does that.

The urine, no. Blood test is for PT-PTT, your ability to clot. If you are way,way slow on clotting they will choose a method besides needle biopsy or delay it.

A few weeks ago I had a 24 hour urine test done along with a potassium test ,was wondering how long do these test usually take and what exactly are these test looking for?

Hi there. The 24 hour analysis would often be ccarried out because of some abnormal Blood test result or in a case of a spike in BP? Did you have any other tests prior to the 24 hour collection? As Rumpled says, there could be a number of reasons for an abnormal high hormone test result. One reason is Aldosterone. This is released by the Adrenal gland into the blood. (Metanephrines) Too much can cause huge BP spikes.

Everything i read on the net says if the plasma catecholamines test is High they should further investigate it even if the 24 hour urine fractional metanephrines is normal. But my endo says its just stress,told me he didn't want to see me back for 4-6 weeks.

My blood cortisol level is high. My doctor ordered a 24 hour urine test. I am currently taking fluconazole tablets & miconozole cream for a yeast infection. Also, I used topical cortisone cream on my face yesterday. I plan to collect the urine tomorrow. Will any of this interfere with the results? Thank you!

The VMA test was to check for a pheo and if I can get the plas metanephrine test that (apparently) is more accurate than the VMA. Still waiting to follow this up.

Well, I am home for the day "peeing in a bucket for 24 hours." My urine has come back 3 weeks in a row w/ protein. My Dr. is worried about preeclampsia. I am a nervous wreck.
