Avatar f tn Went to a doctor and was priscribed over the counterver Zyrtec/Cetirizine for the hives. Took them and immediately the hives vanished. 850029 tn?1238857820 Does anyone know if you can grow resistant to antihistamines? I've been on Zyrtec for a year and feel like it doesn't work as well as it used to. I know that I have more allergens around me but would think I still should be getting relief. I spend at least $100 a month trying to get some relief. I'm thinking with nothing working I should just save myself $100:) the only time I feel someone what better is taking Advil Cold and Sinus, the Zyrtec seems to do nothing......
Avatar n tn In your case,I think it is due to hives. Hives (medically known as urticaria) are red, itchy, raised areas of skin that appear in varying shapes and sizes. They have a tendency to change size rapidly and to move around, disappearing in one place and reappearing in other places, often in a matter of hours. Many cases of hives are "idiopathic," meaning no cause is known. Others may be triggered by viral infections or medications.
Avatar f tn My wife is starting to have postpartum hives and from what I have read, we may be in the same boat as some of these other women that have posted. My question is when the hives are severe, can she take a Zertec once every 12 hours,. The Zyrtec seems to work for the day but at might, they come back. Also, how does this effect breastfeeding.
Avatar n tn I have had a problem with hives all over my body for a month or more now. My hands start to itch first, then the bottom of my feet, then my scalp even the inside of my mouth itches sometimes. I'm a hairdresser and suspect it could be the chemicals and shampoos and products. Or could this be a food allergy? I take a wonderful antihistamine called xyzal. It works really well but when it wears off I'm in trouble.
1102308 tn?1257806648 A combination of beta blockers, Zyrtec and Zantac helped with my hives.
Avatar f tn Simple moisturizing creams, wet soaks, calamine lotions etc are generally enough to soothe the symptoms of hives of pregnancy. Try these along with Zyrtec. Zyrtec also causes hives, sounds strange when it is used for the cure. It is also possible that Zyrtec is aggravating your hives. Please take a skin test or RAST test to know what you are allergic to. Hope this helps. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Do consult an allergy specialist.
Avatar m tn i take zyrtec, allegra and alervert all day every day as my doctor told me for my hives .some days its real bad and others are very good. ive had no effects from the mixture.
Avatar f tn Hi, Yes xyzal, clarinix and Zyrtec all are useful in treating allergic reactions like hives and provide immediate symptomatic relief and not letting them progress further. Cause for occurrence of hives is not found in many cases and is thought to be idiopathic, in such cases only measures for minimizing an attack are useful in tackling the situation as cause is not found. I would recommend to use Zyrtec which is available OTC for treating hives. Best.
Avatar m tn You can take non-sedating antihistamines such as Cetirizine(Zyrtec) or Loratadine(Claritin) to get symptom relief. Sedating antihistamines such as Chlorphenamine(Benadryl) is used at night to get urticaria control. Short courses of oral cortisone or steroids are taken for short periods (one to three days) to settle more severe symptoms. You may take Vitamin C and apply calamine lotion on the rashes.

Avatar f tn all of which should lighten up when I took the Zyrtec, or Allergra, or Claritin.. but I am not finding any relief with any of these.
Avatar n tn I have had the same problem. I had never had hives or any sort of allergic reaction to anything before about 8 months ago. I woke up with hives covering my neck, face, back, and torso. Since, then, every single day, without fail, I have broken out in hives. Like yours, they vary in size, severity, when they occur, even sometimes shape. I have been to countless doctors.
Avatar n tn I am having hives for more than a month, I have been taking all kinds of antihistamines including, zyrtec, claritin, allegra and benadryl..also taken prednosone..nothing seemed to help they help reduce the symptoms for a short period of time but hives just keep coming back, every night I wake up in the middle of the night and find my self covered with red bumpy rash all over my body..even though I took 20 mg of zyrtec before going to bed...
Avatar f tn ve also seen a dermatologist and she said finding the root to the problem is difficult therefore nothing can be done but to continuously taking Zyrtec if my body responds to it. Even though I know Zyrtec can temporarily stops the outbreak, I try not to take much as I fear there might be side effects (I heard it can make you infertile if consuming over a long period of time? Not sure if it's true). ...Help!!!!!!!!!...how do I get rid it permanently?

Avatar m tn I have Discoid Lupus....and JUST started getting really bad hives from C-section scars up my tummy after giving birth to my 2nd child. I had lots of tests done saying I"m literally allergic to everything...food, outside, inside etc...to just take zyrtec and deal with it. I do not believe I'm allergic to all of that, I mean Potatoes?!? There is no way.
Avatar m tn For the last few months I have been breaking out in hives and itching, swelling (severe) espically when doing work or getting hot, possibly cold i am unsure, what might be causing this and what should I do or take. I have been taking benadrly but it keeps coming back.
Avatar f tn Has anyone tried to find the cause of the hives? It's good to treat the hives, obviously- but if they can't locate the cause, treating the symptom won't help much. If it's an allergy cause, then that needs to be pinpointed- but other things can cause this including thyroid issues, hormone issues- and more. Keep pushing for answers!
Avatar m tn Hello, From the symptoms and picture, they look like hives. Hives (medically known as urticaria) are red, itchy, raised areas of skin that appear in varying shapes and sizes. They have a tendency to change size rapidly and to move around, disappearing in one place and reappearing in other places, often in a matter of hours. The mainstay of treatment of hives is antihistamine which may be necessary for prolonged periods (in excess of 6 weeks).
Avatar n tn Hives ( Urticaria) Probably allergic to something, put it into your search Engine for more information, aloe vera gel soothes it. could be shampoo or shower gel, or even Trauma or stress can trigger it, all kinds of foods.they give you anti histimines thay only stop the itch, if you can find the cause you can stop it or it may run its course, where do you live here In CA we have had a lot of it and there was a theory of a virus triggering it.
Avatar f tn This is when the hives started, they ranged in size from a penny to almost a half dollar, and only targeted my upper body, never my legs or lower half. My OBGYN told me it was related to the pregnancy and not to worry about it. My child was stillborn at 32 weeks for unknown reasons, and the hives continued even after, and always flare up 3 times worse around my cycle. Then after my second child, it got really bad. They were on my back and would swell up to be almost 5 inches in diameter.
Avatar f tn I get hives and I take something that is similar to zyrtec for it. Cetirizine 10mg given to me by my VA (veteran affairs) doctor. It's safe. Get well soon. I know the feeling and it *****.
