Zyrtec for cat allergies

Common Questions and Answers about Zyrtec for cat allergies

zyrtec

I take Zyrtec 10 mg tablet daily im allergic to my cat/ seasonal allergies etc.
I figure if people can build up resistance to antihistamines that it would be reasonable to assume that the same thing can happen to the cat. I generally give her the Zyrtec when the allergies are bothering her the most so that I don't give her too much.
I have allergies im wondering if i can buy certain pills or what do you do when u get them??
I thought they already had a formula of Zyrtec for kids? My boys started zyrtec when they were 6 mos old. It was a liquid. Ds had to stop the zyrtec after a while b/c it made his eczema flair as it dried him out way to much. DDAVP is desmopressin acetate sometimes it's rx'd for bedwetting or nose bleeds. Ds had his rx'd for both. He started his shots this past Nov. and he turned 9 that Sept.
I'd go ahead and get another cat.
He was tested several years ago and at the time they were all indoor somewhat controllable allergies ( cat being worst, dust being most difficult) he did have allergy shots for a time, but did not complete them. We have moved and he has obviouslty developed some seasonal allergies that are obviously bad some days and ok others. He's taken Allegra most of the time. Claritan is useless. He was prescribed Zyrtec at one time though still took what he had left of the allegra.
Best of luck - I know how it is with cat allergies - mine are HORRIBLE! I can only manage to be in a house that has a cat for about 5-10 minutes before I start itching and having an asthma attack - even if I'm not anywhere near the cat itself!
HI. I know that Zyrtec is a Cat C during pregnancy and is excreted into breast milk in unknown amounts. Sudafed though is compatible with BF-ing. You can always check www.safefetus.com.
But first, make sure the problem is the pussycat. Perhaps the cat could be boared away for a while and you could see if the symptoms subside? It may be general asthma developing from other reasons. If it is the cat the answer is not to take medications. The inflamation can be life-threatening and is nothing to fool with.
So, until I know more info about other antihistamines for cats, I really don't want to give her anything but the Zyrtec. The Zyrtec I know for sure, because the vet did tell me to 1/4 the dosage for adult humans. Even though Akira is resistant to a small degree with taking her med, she really is such a good girl. She cooperates much more than some cats do. I'm sure some people wish their cats were this easy.
Benadryl is too intense for cats, as it is for many of us humans. Zyrtec isn't nearly so intense. I am interested in knowing how much stinging nettles to give to Akira, since I would be interested in trying that. But, the 1/4 Zyrtec tablet does work. Do not give this dose to kittens. It is only meant for adult cats. As with any cat, Akira objects to taking pills. So, I only give it to her when it's obvious that she really needs a dose.
My daughter brought her two little shitzu dogs to visit for a few days and had not treated them with the flea preventative that she usually uses, because the weather had been cold and she didn't think there would be a problem. Well, we had some warm days and the dogs brought fleas into the house. Both she and I have a bad allergic reaction to the bites and my husband does not. I flea bombed the house and am still feeling bites. I itch all over and develop bad rash.
My symptoms lasted about 4 wks before I finally felt normal again. I continued to see the ENT who tested me for allergies (dogs, grass, dust mold, etc........). I came out w/mod to severe allergies. They started me on an allergy serum at least 4-5 months ago (supposed to desensitize me to allergens). So, for my question. I feel like I have the typical diagnosable sinus infection.
Kitty still scratches some, and I do still have to give her 1/4 tablet of Zyrtec when her allergies bother her the most, but I am certain that because of changes I made for myself that I helped the kitty not suffer more with the environmental allergies.
However, I still have some mild itching and sneezing, but am concerned it may get worse given my prior history of pet dander allergens. I take Zyrtec on a daily basis just to rid myself of my everyday allergies and thought they would take care of the mild symptoms, but they are not. I am also not getting rid of my cat. Other than Zyrtec, are there allergy shots covered by insurance that I could take, or other allergy medications that are prescription?
Thanks for the info. I myself got tested for inhalant allergies today, and it appears that I have none. This is quite odd because a year and a half ago, I used to be allergic to mixed trees at least. So my doctor is now quite certain that this is vasomotor rhinitis (non-allergic rhinitis). But he also thinks something triggered it in the first place and his theory is that it was a sinus infection.
Let me send out some e-mails to some friends who have children with severe allergies ... YOU ARE NOT ALONE and keep pushing for an answer for your son.
so i finally went for a cat scan after courses of antibiotics didnt help..it revealed several polyps through out my sinuses, pus in my left cheek sinus, and airpocket in another sinus, deviated septum and my turbinates are 4x larger then they should be .im on xyzyal which is like zyrtec, veramyst, singular and i take claritin every day...
I just woke up to my swollen ankels and bloody nose but all that still beats the morning sickness I had for 5 months. The baby moves all the time and I just cannot wait for him/her to be here. Anyway - My boyfriend has bad allergies. I had two cats Fred & Ethel before him and now he lives with me. I make him go to the doctor for meds I know it sounds mean but they are my babies too. I went and got them shaved and keep them shaved to help.
I'm going for allergy testing the end of the month. I do have a cat and bird which I have had for years -- my house is clean...not spotless...because after 4 months of feeling like this I really don't feel like cleaning it! I've got an air cleaner I keep running in my bedroom - but I can't tell that it's helped. I just don't know. The only comfort I can give is you're not alone.
If anyone has any ideas I would appriciate your help. P.S. I am also now doing allergy shots for the environmental allergies 3 times a week.
While at the health food store today, we purchased this as well, though Nutiva is a brand that I believe can be purchased at Walmart. For a cat with allergies, we're to give him approximately 2 tablespoons/day, though it's important to start small and work up to that. I dipped my finger in it (it's thick, not like other vegetable oils) and let him smell it - he didn't seem too interested. So I rubbed a little on his bald spots.
Her doctor had me try dimetap and triaminic, but these meds did not seem to help. Her allergist decided to put her on Zyrtec and she has been on it for a month. Her cough has not improved. Her doctor told me to give her delsym. That does help her cough at night. However, the day time coughing is still there. He told me to increase the delsym by 50% and add dimetap as well. Both her allergist and her doctor have gave me these instructions over the phone.

Allergy meds dont seem to help. Allegra, claritin, zyrtec, tried them all with no help except for my seasonal allergies that I am used to getting June through August. I dont have any cough, or wheezing or any trouble breathing. My nose doesnt run, nor do I feel the need to blow it, or even feel congestion in my nose. I have noticed that if I press above my eyebrows in just the right spot it is a bit tender...
Thinking that this may just be allergies, I started taking Zyrtec. It seems to help a little, but I am still coughing. My father used to have bad allergies to our cats, and my parents think that maybe the cats are causing the problem. This seems to make some sense, except that this all started with a cold while in Minnesota, and also, remember the cats have been sick as well. They were sick before me. That led us to believe that it might be something in our apartment.
I've been diagnosed with cat and dust allergies, but it's practically proven that dogs affect me alike now, and a little bit of hayfever every other year. Although symptoms include itchy eyes, burning throat and all, the most intense one is shortness of breath that affects me more and more whenever I have an attack. Could I have asthma? My GP examined me with a stethoscope and found my lungs to be 'in perfect condition'. No phlegm, not anything.
He had her on anitibiotics for over a week and we went for the follow up yesterday 10/11 with no change. She was also on a cough suppresant and a nasal decongestant, but no change in the cough. I have an appointment now with a ENT doctor on Friday 10/13 so hopefully they can help. The allergist told me to use Afrin on her 2 times a day to see if her nasal passage way is clogged, but I dont feel to comfortable about this.
He also had had a complete workup including allergy tests twice, I know he is allergic to cats because his grandmother has a cat and he cant even go over, we had a dog for a little over a week and he was miserable the whole time. The thing with Preston is he has so many other things going on I am not even sure if I am dealing with asthma! He has severe joint pain, crazy rashes that even a dermatologist couldnt explain, stomach problems.
