Avatar m tn t find a workable dosage of phenobartibal, you might want to ask your vet about either Dilantin, Valium, potassium bromide, felbamate, or a different type of anti-seizure medicine that can be used in conjunction with potassium bromide and/or phenobarbital together called Zonisamide. Zonisamide is totally unrelated to any of the other anticonvulsants, but, like Keppra, the full extent of its side effects is not yet known so to some vets, it is somewhat controversial to prescribe it.
Avatar f tn Hi There. I know what you are going through. My dog (12 year old Beagle) started having seizures in Jun 2014. My dog went through about the same thing your dog is going through. Apparently, my dog is very sensitive to PB. Have tried several dosages on her & she does ok with a very, very low dose but the seizures come back in 2-3 wks. Right now she is taking 1/2 tab in a.m., 1/2 tab in p.m and every other evening she takes 1 full tab (this is 16.2 mg).
Avatar m tn The vet did bloodwork and put her on zonisamide 100mg twice a day. She continued having them so vet doubled her dosage to 200 mg twice daily. She continued having them but they were much shorter in duration. So the vet added phenobarbital 1g twice daily in addition to her zonisamide 200mg twice daily. My question is about the side effects. It has been a week since the pheno was added and she is still very clumsy and can't even walk up stairs.
Avatar m tn WE HAVE HAD HER TO SEVERAL VETS, LAST TIME WAS AT UNIVERSITY OF TENN VET HOSPITAL WHERE SHE WAS DIAGNOSED. SHE WAS PUT ON ZONISAMIDE 50MG TWICE A DAY. SHE HAS BEEN ON THIS FOR A WEEK AND A HALF AND WE CAN TELL NO DIFFERENCE IN THE HEAD BOBBIN. SHE ALSO IS NOT EATING ARE WE EXPECTING TOO MUCH TO SOON? WILL HER APPETITE COME BACK. I HAVE BEEN BACK IN TOUCH WITH HER REGULAR VET WHO SENT US TO UT AND SHE WANTS TO GET IN TOUCH WITH UT WITH SOME QUESTIONS.
Avatar f tn I have been seeing a regular neurologist to see if she can treat my migraines and am currently on 150 mg. of Zonisamide every night to try to help that, but I am also working with Dr. Gardner at UPMC, who is a Chiari specialist. He believes it is best to eliminate all other possibilities before actually resorting to surgery to treat the Chiari, which I respect. I go back for a 6 month follow-up MRI and consult with Dr. Gardner next week.
15422595 tn?1440452745 She was initially put on Zonisamide but after 2 weeks, she had a couple more seizures. At that point the docs added Phenobarbital. We've had her blood tested and the PB is at the proper levels in her system. The good news is she's not had any seizures since then... the not so good news is that she's still not adapted well to the meds after 7 weeks.
Avatar n tn I have a 1 year 4 month old German Shepherd named Melo who's been having seizures since he was 1. I just wanted to share my experience because I know its comforting to hear stories of other people that are going through what you're going through, makes you feel less hopeless. Melo had 4 seizures in the span of 2 hours, he's taking 300mg of Zonisamide every 12 hours but before take refill arrived he had ran out and that's when the seizures happened.

Avatar f tn Keppra (levetiracetam) is mostly excreted by the kidneys are is one of the safest drugs speaking in terms of therapeutic vs. toxic blood concentrations. Other drugs include zonisamide, potassium bromide, etc. A large percentage of dogs respond to one anti-seizure medication. For some, one is not enough and they need 2, 3, or 4 others! (I have seen it). It is not excessive to have more than one drug. Each drug works on a different receptor in the brain.
1577473 tn?1296177286 in my area to be seen by a neurologist. I saw the doctor for the first appt and she put me on Zonisamide as a migraine preventative and Maxalt-MLT 10 mg as a rescue medication as well as ordering some labs, an MRI and an MRA. All tests came back normal. The Maxalt worked well when I got the migraines but insurance wasn't too happy with it so we had to switch. She then put me on Relpax which didn't work at all.
1402028 tn?1280858335 s have been performed. The seizure medication I was on was called Zonisamide...and it made all of my symptoms worse. I was taken off of that and put on Amitripylene, which I am currently on. It doesn't seem to be doing a whole lot but the doctor wants me to try it for 3 months and I am on month 2. My sleep pattern is messed up badly now as well; I don't know if it is from the medicines, or just lack of exercise since I'm stuck indoors so much now. Thank you for the help.

3248373 tn?1346981993 try zonisamide slowly go up to 300 mg have your doctor try you on that it worked for mine, Topomax just made me anger and paranode
Avatar n tn Seizure activity comes in many forms. Most epileptic dogs suffer grand mal seizures, where they drop to the floor and convulse, paddling with their legs as though they are running, for about 30 seconds (although for the anguished owner watching the seizure, it seems like an hour). Petite mal seizures, however, come in all shapes and sizes, and can be anything from the dog simply zoning out and staring blankly for a time, to the head nodding that you describe.
Avatar f tn ve had several medications from Topomax to Lyrica with no relief and am currently taking Zonisamide daily (9 weeks) with Naproxin and Imatrex as needed. I graph my headaches daily and average a 5 on a 0 - 10 scale, no changes noted with Zonisamide treatment. No days are 0. I avoid taking any OTC medications and use the Naproxin and Imatrex very sparingly. An MRI a year ago showed bulging but it was discounted as unimportant by my neurologist.

Avatar f tn I also have Asthma and Epilepsy to which I take Lamictal, Zonisamide, Albuterol(when needed-which is quite rare), Claritan, and Singular. Now on another site I spotted an area that stated certain OTC meds can cause problems with Gerd. My question is I also Take Vitam that of Multi Vitamins, Omega 3-6-9, B-12, Deodorized Garlic, Ginger(which isn't too often though I did purchase a bottle to begin in the near future on a daily basis), and Ginseng.
Avatar m tn 3X DAY, 13) VIMPAT 100MG. 2X DAY, 14) ZONISAMIDE 100MG. 3BEDTIME, 15) LANSOPRAZOLE 30MG. 2X DAY, 16) SUCRALFATE 1GM. 3X DAY, 17) COLESTIPOL 1GM. 3X DAY. I'VE TRIED VIAGRA BEFORE WITH NO RESULTS. I WAS ON WELLBUTRIN BEFORE ZIPRASIDONE. AT THAT TIME WHEN I HAD AN ORGASM I DIDN'T EJACTULATE ALTHOUGH NOW WHEN I AM ABLE TO ACHIEVE ORGASM I'VE GOT LITTLE EJACTULATION AT TIMES. I'VE GOT AN APPOINTMENT ON 4/30/14 WITH MY UROLOGIST AND I PLAN TO DISCUSS THIS WITH HIM THEN.
Avatar f tn t know his commands, the people in the house ( including me ), or the other dogs and cats in the house. I want to know if he will even recover from this or if there is something I can do to help. He keeps pacing and whining, even in the middle of the night. Should I bring him in again? Could there be something more serious going on?
20840438 tn?1530997576 I have a German Shepherd that suffers from seizures, he has idiopathic epilepsy. He takes 300g of Zonisamide twice a day, personally phenobarbital causes those side effects as well to my dog. He forgot his name, forgot house manners like not eating from the trash, he didn't recognize my parents and he also hated to be petted. As soon as the phenobarbital was out of his system (which took him about 3 days) he went completely back to normal.
Avatar f tn Monday late morning we brought him to our vet and they said his vitals fine and gave us Zonisamide after the Valium wears off. Monday night all he did was walk around confused and drooling insistently. He drank some water and ate very little. Monday night he finally calmed down in bed but never shut his eyes. His eyes were open the entire night and he was not very responsive. We brought him to the vet this morning and he had a fever of 106.
