Common Questions and Answers about Zonisamide and dogs

zonegran

Avatar m tn t find a workable dosage of phenobartibal, you might want to ask your vet about either Dilantin, Valium, potassium bromide, felbamate, or a different type of anti-seizure medicine that can be used in conjunction with potassium bromide and/or phenobarbital together called Zonisamide. Zonisamide is totally unrelated to any of the other anticonvulsants, but, like Keppra, the full extent of its side effects is not yet known so to some vets, it is somewhat controversial to prescribe it.
Avatar m tn The vet did bloodwork and put her on zonisamide 100mg twice a day. She continued having them so vet doubled her dosage to 200 mg twice daily. She continued having them but they were much shorter in duration. So the vet added phenobarbital 1g twice daily in addition to her zonisamide 200mg twice daily. My question is about the side effects. It has been a week since the pheno was added and she is still very clumsy and can't even walk up stairs.
15422595 tn?1440452745 Hello and thanks in advance for any thoughts. Our 5 y.o. Basset/Beagle mix was officially pegged with epilepsy about 2 months ago after she started having multiple seizures in a day. She was initially put on Zonisamide but after 2 weeks, she had a couple more seizures. At that point the docs added Phenobarbital. We've had her blood tested and the PB is at the proper levels in her system. The good news is she's not had any seizures since then...
Avatar m tn I have researched the Advantage and found that it can be toxic to some dogs and have told this to all the vets we have had her to. They still think she is having seizures. She was being fed the Beniful that comes in the small plastic containers like a stew but since she has been put on the zoniamide her appitite has gone to pot. Just talked to her vet and she is changing to something not as hard on her stomach. Her treats are Milos chicken jerky and it is made in China so she stops getting that.
1577473 tn?1296177286 in my area to be seen by a neurologist. I saw the doctor for the first appt and she put me on Zonisamide as a migraine preventative and Maxalt-MLT 10 mg as a rescue medication as well as ordering some labs, an MRI and an MRA. All tests came back normal. The Maxalt worked well when I got the migraines but insurance wasn't too happy with it so we had to switch. She then put me on Relpax which didn't work at all.
Avatar f tn I have been seeing a regular neurologist to see if she can treat my migraines and am currently on 150 mg. of Zonisamide every night to try to help that, but I am also working with Dr. Gardner at UPMC, who is a Chiari specialist. He believes it is best to eliminate all other possibilities before actually resorting to surgery to treat the Chiari, which I respect. I go back for a 6 month follow-up MRI and consult with Dr. Gardner next week.
Avatar f tn A large percentage of dogs respond to one anti-seizure medication. For some, one is not enough and they need 2, 3, or 4 others! (I have seen it). It is not excessive to have more than one drug. Each drug works on a different receptor in the brain. The more ways a seizure can be prevented, the more likely the dog is to not have them. We start off giving one and hope they respond, but may need more.

Avatar f tn currently taking wellbutrin and adderall for major depression. since i am still feeling down, not able to do normal daily tasks, dr. is giving me zonisamide. what should i expect from taking this drug along with the other medications for major depression.
Avatar n tn I took him to the animal medical center and they gave him one pill of phenobarbital and also about 15 zonisamide pills. I took him home gave him the pb and 3 pills of the zoni. He was whining non stop, really hungry, really thirsty, forgot some of the house rules (not going through the trash and no standing on the kitchen table), he seemed to not recognize my parents and didn't respond to words like "outside", "eat" and "treat".

20840438 tn?1530997576 While I was out of town and my husband was home with him he had 2 seizures over the night on a Wednesday and possibly 1 during the middle of the night on the Tuesday night before. He was immediately taken to the vet on Thursday morning and I believe had one seizure there. They treated him with Diazepam (Valium) and after spending the day under observation sent him home with additional doses to be given. He was to return the next morning after fasting for additional testing.
1402028 tn?1280858335 I had never had one before and ever since I have been experiencing horrible heachaches and sensetivitiy to light and other things. I have been seeing a neurologist, who has tried 2 different medicines. I know it is a long process, but it is really putting my life on hold. It is keeping me from finishing college as easily as I would have liked and I lost my job.
Avatar f tn of effexor and i couldnt sleep at nite so my doctor started me on 25 mg. of zonisamide and took me off effexor.I am having horrible side effects but dont know which med. is causing it.I have been crying in the mornings, having a constant stomach ache and my head feels very confused almost to the point of disillusion. 3248373 tn?1346981993 I was put on topomax for complex migranes about 7 months ago and they put me on 100 mg 50mg in the morning and 50mg at night and friday of last week they upped my dose to 200 mg because my migranes were getting worse. Today all of a sudden I am itching everywhere and its been a constant thing all day and it wont stop ! no rashes though weird but I am wondering if its the meds. But I am also on lamictal as well so is anyone else having these problems ?
561706 tn?1333947274 I have been having bouts of double vision for the past year. I have been screened for MS and a brain tumor. Doctor's stuck. Has anyone had a problem with this, too. I used to have migranes years ago, but my aura was a different kind of visual disturbance. I don't get very bad headaches with these episodes but my head starts to hurt some of the time. Thanks.
Avatar n tn She was also put on KBr and started having episodes of zoning out and falling, so she was taken off of the KBr, as it was thought it was possibly becoming toxic. Her neurologist put her on zonisamide, and I have been very happy with the results. She has also been on pheno the entire time as well. I still notice some head "ticking" and am not quite sure why it is happening, but she snaps right out of it quickly if you say her name.
Avatar f tn I graph my headaches daily and average a 5 on a 0 - 10 scale, no changes noted with Zonisamide treatment. No days are 0. I avoid taking any OTC medications and use the Naproxin and Imatrex very sparingly. An MRI a year ago showed bulging but it was discounted as unimportant by my neurologist. A week ago my PT however suggested an exercise for correcting a bulging cervical disc that she feels I may have. She knew nothing of the MRI results.
Avatar f tn Lately I have been having constant anxiety and I rarely worry about things this bad or this long. I believe it is caused by Biotin because I had a similar fit about three years when I stopped taking Biotin, but I did not see a link then; I got prescription Ativan for anxiety took it for only three nights and the problem went away almost instantly.
Avatar f tn I also have Asthma and Epilepsy to which I take Lamictal, Zonisamide, Albuterol(when needed-which is quite rare), Claritan, and Singular. Now on another site I spotted an area that stated certain OTC meds can cause problems with Gerd. My question is I also Take Vitam that of Multi Vitamins, Omega 3-6-9, B-12, Deodorized Garlic, Ginger(which isn't too often though I did purchase a bottle to begin in the near future on a daily basis), and Ginseng.

Avatar f tn t know his commands, the people in the house ( including me ), or the other dogs and cats in the house. I want to know if he will even recover from this or if there is something I can do to help. He keeps pacing and whining, even in the middle of the night. Should I bring him in again? Could there be something more serious going on?
152660 tn?1291755571 I'm in a big quandary. My 75 year old father is losing his drivers license so he is going to be stuck at home all day mostly alone. I thinking about getting him a dog to keep him company. The problem will be the cats. They don't like dogs or don't like those that they have been exposed to. Does anyone have any suggestions on breeds better with cats, how to introduce them or any other suggestions for me.
Avatar n tn **************************** [Valium] is not recommended on a daily basis long term. Some dogs will have an adverse reaction to valium (diazepam) and behavior changes are possible. Diazepam is used in animals as a sedative, anti-convulsant, and to treat certain behavior disorders, such as anxiety. It may also be used for its effect of relaxing both skeletal muscles (muscles used in movement) and smooth muscles (muscles of the digestive system and urinary bladder).
