Some newer medications like
Zolpidem (Ambien) act more specifically on the same area in the brain and are thought to have fewer
side effects. But they are still considered controlled substances. Sleep medications are most effective when used for short term situations. If medications are used over the long term, dependence and tolerance may be a problem. Talk to your doctor if you are not responding to the lower dose of your present medication and discuss what suitable medicine for you.
