zoloft vs prozac weight gain

I am a survivor of an abusive marriage of 28 years and a major heart attack. The doctor insists that I must stay on antidepressants for the rest of my life. I gained 40 pounds while taking Zoloft and yet I can't cope without some sort of medication nor can I cope with this weight gain. I have always prided myself in looking nice. I have just switched to Wellbutrin XL because I heard it doesn't cause that weight gain that Zoloft does...

My doctor says its had the least complaints of weight gain as a side effect. As to where Zoloft has had many complaints of weight gain. Like I said before.. Zoloft put a massive amount of weight on me. My daughter also has gained 70 lbs from it and was recently swithced to something else. I figured it was just me that my daughter wouldnt be affected the way I was from it. But I was wrong. I started taking the Prozac yesterday.. took the second dose this morning. We shall see.

Newer antidepressants don’t have the same side effect. While Paxil and Zoloft do cause some weight gain, other SSRIs, like Prozac, Celexa and Lexapro, don’t. I have been on both citalopram and prozac but citalopram was longterm weight gain, dry mouth and headaches and prozac major short term weight gain. Came of prozac for that reason after only a few months and wonder if it would've settled with time, or go back to the one i was on for 12 years but had some side effects including weight gain. Doc says my last option is mirtazapine but it is also an appetite stimulator.

A few pounds and then it stops? Or do you continue to gain more weight? I have a couple thoughts on weight gain. If you are still depressed you might be stress eating or eating to relieve some of your symptoms. Weight gain or loss is a common symptom of depression. Taking more medicine could actually help you out. I typically lose my appetite when I get depressed. There's always a correction period when I start to feel better and get my appetite back.

My old psysician did tell me about the weight gain with paxil so I could not do it, I tried but my anxiety was so high about the weight gain.. Its your choice and you really don't know which was is going to be the best for you but my advice would be to listen to your doctor. If that doesn't work then you can always try something else. I am in the process to switching to Lexapro and I am discouraged because i'm also very tired, your body doesn't get used to it?

First of all because we are all different regarding medications but also Zoloft is a relatively soft AD which is good for med sensitive person like you. Zoloft have no strong evidences of weight gain in the literature but like I said every person can react differently considering medications. I think going back on Zoloft and managing a careful dosage and diet. Another suggestion you can talk about with your psychiatrist is trying a sedating AD like mirtazapine.

Keep in mind you could gain weight on Zoloft or any ssri, and your weight gain on Paxil has been minimal -- I gained 50 pounds over several years on it. And be careful going off it, it can be difficult. Do it slowly and carefully.

Yes unfortunately antidepressants are often related to weight gain. Sounds like you got it right with Prozac because Prozac and Zoloft are two antidepressant that are supposed to have the less impact on your weight.

Most people switch to Wellbutrin but another very good choice is ask your doctor about prozac..it works well and there is no weight gain or sexual interest loss.

I used to take Zoloft many years ago. I took it for 4 full years at 150Mgs a day and it had absolutly no effect on my weight. Paxil on the other hand is one SSRI that seems to add pounds. Tri-cyclics and Tetra-cyclics absolutly do cause massive weight gain with no doubt. Meds like Prozac, Effexor, Welbutrin and Cymbalta never had any impact on my weight either. I do know that Paxil, Nortriptilyne, and Remeron are very much associated with massive weight gain in most people.

Hi Prozac for me has been great after switching to it from Effexor the only problem I have had with it is the weight gain which after now being on Prozac for 12months is getting to me so going to go and see my doctor and see what he can do.

First I took Lexapro then Cymbalta and now Zoloft. My doctor keeps changing my meds because of the weight gain and every change only makes it worse. This latest change has caused me to gain about a pound a day. Since Thursday I have gained three more pounds and have been eating next to nothing. I finally convinced my doctor that I am not pigging out all day and she ha ordered a thyroid test. I'm so scared that I'm going to die from this, it's uncontrollable.

I run competitively and have been on Zoloft. I am not sure if the weight loss is due to the drug. I would suspect it could be from depression, pressure, etc, but that weight is definitely not healthy. Most people here on this forum will actually talk about weight gain while on these types of medications. Is your daughter talking with a counselor? If not, it may time to do this, especially with the weight loss...please keep us posted!

As for the weight gain, it depends on the person. Some people notice some weight gain, some actually lose, and some see no change at all. I was on Zoloft and had no issues with weight gain. Try not to get a bunch of preconceieved notions about the Zoloft based on what others have told you. Allow yourself to have your own experience...it will probably greatly differ from other people's.

What you can do is to talk to your doctor about a soft SSRI like Zoloft. Zoloft in the literature is not linked with a lot of weight gain. One of the few SSRI not linked with weight gain.

Zoloft on it's own is not supposed to cause weight gain. The weight gains observed are mostly due to increased calories intake, modification of lifestyle habits.

All of these drugs can cause weight gain except maybe prozac, but it isn't that effective for anxiety most of the time. So you're either going to figure out a non-med way of fixing your problem or face weight gain, since you're obviously one of the ones who has that side effect. And as for being hungry all the time, I don't think that's really got anything to do with it, I gained 50 pounds on Paxil and didn't change my eating at all and always exercised a lot.

Why the weight gain on these anit d's is it because you are so relaxed? Does Prozac have the same effect? I know 3 people on Prozac and they are skinny......I don't want to gain weight.

Thank goodness I wasnt and all was well. Just need to up my water intake and gain weight. I have not gained anything. (well i gained 2 lbs but lost it) I have no appetite. Anyways, I have horrible anxiety and panic disorder and he wanted me to try and control it with veryy limited zanax use vs. a long term ssri. I dont want to have to take zanax 3x a week, or at all. But I had to when it got bad. So we are trying me on zoloft. Its like 50mg. A low dose.

for about 6 years after my last bout of medication (Risperdal and Zoloft) that I quit due to horrible weight gain. So, I am also looking to find the most weight neutral combination as well. In the past 4 years, I have tried Luvox (increased my heart rate and I could not sleep), Prozac (gained weight), and now Effexor. I know others who take these same drugs and did not have these side effects, so I get it that it's different for everyone.

I began taking Zoloft July 2015 and stayed on it until I discussed w/ my pcp about it possibly being contributed to weight gain. Switched to Prozac April 2016.

From what I have read all AD's including Prozac have weight gain as a side effect, they increase the urge to eat as a side effect - Prozac is supposed to not do this and cause weight loss but if you read beyond the drug company propaganda you will find a host of people who gained weight on Prozac just as they did on every other AD.

Yes, I took prozac for a while and I looked like I swallowed a wheelie bin,I put the weight on,but that all changed when the doc put me on valium to help with my anxiety.It worked well and helped me sleep with no weight gain.Prozac also cause a huge drop in sexual desire/performance.
