Zoloft for young children

Common Questions and Answers about Zoloft for young children

zoloft

Avatar n tn After just one meeting, the psychiatrist wants my daughter to start taking zoloft, specifically for depression. I went to zoloft .com and realized it is recommended for OCD in children, but not depression. It goes on, stating that in clinical trials there were no connections between zoloft and suicide in children either with OCD or drepression. I want to help my daughter be happy, but why would the psychiatrist place her on a medication which is not approved by the FDA??
Avatar n tn can zoloft cause or aggravate rage in young children? Will Tenex and or Zoloft aggravate psychotic features?
Avatar f tn I couldn't add too much to Paxiled's post, but I will say that I'm really shocked that you were started on Zoloft so young! Diagnosing children that young with ANY kind of more "adult" mental illness is really tricky business, let alone prescribing medication. I'm sure you know all that, I just had to comment. That's kind of nuts! As for the sexual side effects, that's pretty par for the course.
Avatar n tn My son has been on Zoloft for about 3 months. He started out on 25 mg with no side effects. Two weeks after he increased to 50 mg he began a headache - meaning it has not stopped. Here we are, going on week three of a headache. However, my son has been on other medications for sinisitis and bronchitis that could account for a headache. He now off of pulmicort, xopenex and nasonex. He is currently going through allergy testing as well.
Avatar f tn I worry about her having increased suicidal thoughts, as I have read this can be a bad side effect for young adults and children. She said she really is not considering suicide, but to hear my baby even talk of it is very concerning. Please let me know what you think.
4173517 tn?1350598701 zoloft/sertraline is an SSRI that can cause mania to bipolars. Rule no 1 don't ever take any antidepressant except associated with a mood stabilizer or an antipsychotic. If your doctor put you on zoloft alone and he said you have bipolar disorder, then I am afraid you should check his degree. I am SURE he is is not a doctor at all, let alone pdoc. Zoloft is one of the strong SSRI of course effexor is worse especially in withdrawals but zoloft is also bad. It's only 10 years old.
Avatar m tn Hello. I'm sorry to hear about your son. I'm 38 and in the same boat. It's WAY too soon for the Zoloft to have any effect. It takes 1, sometimes even 2 months to kick in. Be patient. From what I hear he will get very positive results from this. I wish you and him the best of luck. Life is rarely easy, and we often have to find ways to hurdle over the many obstacles it throws at us...all of us. For some it's anxiety, for others it's something else. Happy 4th!
Avatar f tn They are kind of like Occupational Therapists that see the child weekly in all different environments, they use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy type methods for children, but they also are great support to the family aswell, acting as advocates and can refer to other people if necessary. My step son has mental health issues and we got the support above through the Paediatrician.

Avatar n tn My daughter (15 years old) has been recently prescribed 50mg Zoloft for mild depression. I am very scared that this is not the right way to deal with the problems that she has and in particular scared of side effects and withdrawal dramas eventually. Do you have any suggestions how I could help her deal with depression without the medication and is Zoloft very dangerous to start with?
445783 tn?1279807333 Can anyone recommend the best dog breeds for a home with young children (ages 8 and 6). Our family dog just passed away and she was not great with the kids. We got her 3 years before we had our children. She was a boxer/pit mix of some sort. Any recommendations?
Avatar f tn Can anyone give me a comparison between Effexor XR and Zoloft for severe anxiety. My Psycharist has just put me on Effexor XR 37.5. I have also ben prescribed Zoloft in the last 6 months but never took it. I have taken Effexor XR 37.5 for two months but quit cold turkey because of the cost, side effects. I really do not want to start Effexor again because of the nasty withdrawal. Anyone had experience with either or both? With Zoloft, is it difficult to sleep at night?
484698 tn?1208819983 Our child has been on SSRI medication since she was six years old (Zoloft is one of the SSRI meds). She suffers from severe anxiety. However, some research indicates that with the proper medication (and perhaps therapy and intervention) at an early age, the "pathways" in the brain can be retrained so that the person does not require the medication for his/her entire life.
1771101 tn?1314103509 I am a widowed mother of 4 children ages, 2,3,7, and 8 and I need to maintain some form of sanity to care for my children. I was very hesitant about taking medication and am hoping to have some success with Zoloft. I know that everyones body responds differently to medications but any positive feedback re: Zoloft usage and getting back to some form of normalcy would be greatly appreciated as I am very discouraged and thinking that I will be this way forever. Thank you everyone.
Avatar f tn No, you can't continue giving her zoloft. Its not a drug to play around with - and that is what you are doing. I am not exactly sure how to stop giving it. Cold turkey might be bad. I would definitely tell your doctor. Your doctor needs to know because its possible that she has been miss medicated or miss diagnosed, and this information might be helpful.
Avatar f tn t do the xanax, as I have 2 young children to take care of. Now I am on a small dose of Klonopin at bedtime and for me it works wonders. It's been about a month since I started back on any meds and I see a drastic difference every day. Paxil is an "everything" pill.....anxiety, social disorders, depression. Just remember; what works for 1 person may not work for another. I know that it works for me and that's why I went back on it.
Avatar f tn But I really admire young mums! It also means by the time they have all grown up you will still be young!
Avatar m tn m afraid she likes to (1)frown and shout at when she is asked to do something( could it be because her mother is a short-tempered one?).(2)She has an unnecessary fear for dogs.(3)Since she was very young(about 3 years)she always displays a kind of anxiety when cutting the nail of her smallest(fifth)toe, she is afraid that I would cut her toe rather than her nail.(4)She also shows some signs of mild trichotillomania.
Avatar n tn im desperate for help im 20 years old and im terrified i wont be able to have children coz i had an eating disorder im so scared ill be infertile please help how do i know if ill be able to concieve ?
Avatar f tn Hello, I recently discovered friable, breaking asbestos pipe insulation in my basement. We are going to have air quality testing done, and have considered dust wipe testing as well. I am extremely concerned for my family's health, including very young children, and would really appreciate any help you could provide! We stored the a/c units in the basement uncovered for at least one year, and covered for 2 additional years, using them in the summertime.
177505 tn?1220442258 Hi, I am a 31 year old female suffering from panic disorder. 7 years ago i was put on zoloft. through those years I was on an average dose of 25mg. i was basically panic free for that time. all of the sudden about 6 months ago i had a major panic attack. a few months prior to that i had to start taking the "generic" form of zoloft because of insurance purposes.
Avatar n tn I know children are curious but is this normal for children at his age to talk about this? We only have 2 bdrms so that is why they share a room. We are both in shock and don't know what to do or how to handle it. Any advice would be great!
Avatar f tn Our psychologist claims that the correct medication in the correct dosage will not change you, but correct you. Recently there have been research studies on SSRI's (and Zoloft is one of these) which has shown that children who do not take medication and suffer from severe anxiety actually lose "brain cells"; while those children taking the SSRI did not lose any brain cells. But, this research is very new and as far as I know, it has not been proven to be "fact".
Avatar f tn forms of medicine, such as natural remedies, and also try and find other parents in your area with children who have similar differences, it just helps for your son to see other children who are the same as him and for you to speak with parents who deal with the same things every day. Remember, you are not alone, listen to your son, as he grows he will express what he needs. Good luck!
