zetia and niaspan

Ever since I started taking Zetia and Fenofibrate together as recommended by my DR, I have put on pounds, am more bloated around the belly,a nd have persistent chest pains. I noticed this has occurred ever since I have been on cholesterol lowering meds, but is more noticeable in the past year with the new combination of drugs. I mentioned this to my DR and he said I need the drugs because of my High Cholesterol. What do you think?

I just got off of zetia and welchol. I could not take statins. I tried them all. Used to take Niaspan and fenofibrate but they took me off cause both cause problems in some and had not 'reduced the incidence of cardiac events'. I think they have concluded that neither do Zetia, except when used with a statin, so it is the statin doing the work. I also think Welchol has been shown to not reduce cardiac events too. not sure. I am on Repatha. Third bi weekly shot.

I have tried a lot of meds for this condition, have taken advicor,lipitor,crestor,zetia,tricor,provastatin,niaspan,gemfibronil. I have been on lovaza (omega 3,and 6 ) for the pass five months, but as you can see it has not helped very much. Heart doctor says I have taken the limit. All of these choles meds causes me to ache in my muscles very very bad, and dr. says this could be a serious situation. I need to know from someone please what can I take now ?. I need very bad to be on some med.

Unfortunately, besides niaspan, statins and fish oil, we do not have any other agents to raise HDL. You are on the maximum dose of niaspan also which is great! There are a few new agents which are being studied but likely won't be on the market for awhile. Make sure you are exercising 30-45 minutes 3-4x per week if possible because exercise helps raise HDL also. You will have to see if any of the stem cell trials whether you would qualify but it is worth looking into.

With Zetia interfere with the absorption of the benefits of these supplements and if so what can I do to get the full benefit of Zetia and the supplements, if anything. Ar there any other supplements that should be avoided while taking Zetia? Many thanks.

Recently, my doctor suggested that he has successfully treated and eliminated fatty liver with Niaspan. I cannot find any literature on the matter. Niaspan will certainly address the low HDL. However, can you clarify whether (1) Niaspan would treat fatty liver and (2) is Niaspan's use contradicted with those diagnosed with fatty liver disease?

I have already had one bad experience with another statin, Advicor, that resulted in me having permanent lymphedema in my ankles and legs. Now I am unsure about Niaspan. I would appreciate any comments on Niaspan please. Thanks.

Well, it depends on what kind of medication you are on. I am taking Niaspan for cholestoral and these are the side effects of it. When your body have enough of these vitamins, it flushes out of body like this. It is advised by proffessionals to take an aspirin half an hour before taking Niaspan to avoid this flush. In my case, I simply stopped taking Niaspan and seek alternative from my doctor. It is always good to see doctor in such cases. I hope this is helpful to you.

I am 32 yrs old and weights 131 lbs at 5' 3 ". Despite controling my diet and doing karate 3 hrs per week I have high cholesterol (287) and high triclyceride (250). I am at a lost and don't know how best to control it. At these levels I feel dizzy and lethargic. Please advise.

I assume you have a cholesterol issue. Why not ask your doctor for a prescription for a statin medicine? You can get the drug for $4.00 a month or less, and it's much less invasive than Niaspan, in my opinion. I tried Niaspan years ago, it wasn't effective, and I would get a huge 'blushing' feeling, my face would flush and I would be miserable. Statin drugs are very safe and in my opinion, very effective.

The drug in question is Niaspan and the person saying the study couldn't have shown a link between the drug and cancer was a cariologist who wanted to proscribe the niaspan. I don't know that any of that matters, of course.

Statins work in the liver and every commercial I have seen advises not to take if you have liver problems. Zetia works in the intestines. Was the Zetia working? If my memory serves me correctly, MikeS is taking statins and he had a TP. He is far more knowledgeable on the subject than I am and hopefully he will see this post and give his input. Zetia is part of a class of drugs called cholesterol absorption inhibitors.

If you have diabetes or higher than normal blood sugar levels, you should carefully check your blood sugar levels, especially during the first few months of NIASPAN and during any change in your dose. Report any changes in your blood sugar levels to your health care professional. Hypothyroid (high TSH) has a huge effect on cholesterol levels. When your TSH gets back to normal your triglicerides should improve also. You could also ask for an A1C blood test.

Anyone here know anything about zetia and its affect on the thyroid and or levo absorption? I have read it may affect absorption and the rx monograph says talk tp your doctor if you have thyroid disorders. He knows I am on synthroid, but I am curious how this drug affects it.

I recently started Niaspan 500mg for high cholesterol and angina. I take it at night. On the 3rd night I woke at 4.30am feeling like my whole body was on fire, particularly my head and back of my neck. I couldn't stand the sheets on me, they felt like sandpaper. After an hour or so it went away. Could this be some reaction to the Niacin. It scared me badly. I am 71, also take valium.

I have been on 20 mg of simvastatin and 3000 mg niaspan now my ck levels have went from 60 to 295 i could hardly walk .will my levels come down if i lower dose. and reverse damage. i have 12 stents .the rest of my blood work is fine.

AST on upper end of normal at 40. The doctor said to stop the Lipitor...but stay on the Zetia...... and retest in 1-1/2 weeks which he did this past Sept. 30th. His ALP came down to normal at 91, his ALT stayed the same at 79, his AST stayed relatively the same at 42, but his GGTP went quite high at 240. The doctor's office called and told him to come in next week.

I was diagnosed in having a fatty liver. I take Zocor 40mg and Zetia 10mg. My ALT level is 120 and AST is 52. My question is should I control how much I drink or not drink at all?

If it were me I would give pravastatin a chance, but if I had the same side effects and I could not live with them, I would try something like Zetia. You could also add a fenofibrate like Tricor to lower your TGLs as well, very safe and no side effects. This will help lower your overall number but will not impact your LDL which is you main issue. You really need to get that under 130 with no other risk factors.

He was also on Niaspan and only gets the flushing. But he had to go down to every other day on Niaspan. So, you may have to do something like that. If you are on a very high dose of Niaspan then less common side effects can be fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, headache and rash. But my husband is on 500mg with no problem. I don't know what they consider a high dose. The Niaspan is only really for lowering your Triglycerides not the cholesterol.

I’m a active 68 yr. old women, that has tried 3 different statins. Everyone gave me muscle problems. Then my GP put me on Zetia. Said it would be different. After two months on it, it was worst than the statins. Woke up one morning, couldn’t close my hand. My fingers were so swollen and my both thumb joints would not bend. When I tried to bend them they clicked and was very painful.

Vytorin is a combination of Simvastatin and Zetia so you are taking the same thing without the Zetia so you should not see any changes in how your body reacts.

I finally went to a specialist in Baltimore who read my history which showed all the meds I was taking and he noticed that I was taking Zetia and told me that he believed Zetia caused chronic coughing in some people; so he looked it up on his computer and sure enough, that was one of the warnings. I stopped the Zetia and the coughing disappeared completely within a couple of weeks. The point here is that medicines, while helping one problem, frequently can cause another.

I'm new here and want to find out what people think about the new research on Niaspan. I can't figure out how to filter my search results by date so that I just get recent results.

Currently I am on Tarka, Niaspan and Coumadin for HTN and atrial fibrillation. On 1/11, Sectral was added to my cardiac med profile to aid in arrythmia control. On 1/26 I started Lovenox prior to a colonoscopy. These are the only two meds changed, with all other meds longstanding. On 12/1 I had a complete metabolic profile drawn for a routine endocrinology follow up and LFTs then were ALT 17 and AST 18.

Does flushing also include splotchy and prickly? I get flushed with my hot flashes. I was just wondering if Harry's having a mild allergic reaction to one of the meds. Harry - if you start to puff up or have trouble with your throat or breathing, call the doctor right away. Just watching out for you.

It goes away after about 20 minutes but really was strange..Told my doctor about it and she said its a side effect of Niaspan a cholesterol reducing drug. I hope this helps some of you.
