Yep, tums helped me in the beginning, but it could not keep up with my heartburn by the end of the first trimester, and water also made it worse for me, so I would drink milk afterwards when I could, or take more tums. They actually made me gag though because of m/s, so I called my Dr. and she told me to take Zantac. Helped so much better till the end, then I could not control it again, but the Zantac still made it bearable.

Take the Zantac 150 (or two 75's) in the morning and before dinner at night, or before bed, whichever you prefer. I have had heartburn forever and I tried the prescription meds, but I feel the Zantac works the best. But 75 is not enough, make sure you take 150 mg. twice a day. Also, you can supplement it with Mylanta or Maalox liquid if it's really bad. I'm not saying this will be a miracle cure, but it's worth a try. Unless you tried Zantac already, I don't know. Let me know.
10 oh yah that is what i waas going to tell kassimom about the zantac vs. mylanta thing i asked my doctor and she said the reason she says take zantac is because zantac actually reduces the amount of acid present. mylanta she said is just a coating to cover what acid is there, so you could endup taking a ton of mylanta vs. taking just one zantac.
When you are pregs especially, your stomach is surprisingly high up in your chest, can get pushed way up under your breastbone, so if the pain seems next to your heart, well that is where the stomach is! The heartburn I've been experiencing with pregnancy is more like acid or being hit with a ball bat than it is like what I thought "heartburn" was before pregnancy. Wakes me up at night, hugely more painful, etc. So that may well be it. It is nothing like pre-pregnancy heartburn.
And it was only once then. It just happened so suddenly, I was breathing find and then I lie down and immediately begin experiencing problems. I also have terriible posture and spend 5+ hours a day using the computer, sitting not up straight in a chair, not sure if that has anything to do with it either.

I was put on a prescription med and then I could eat anything I wanted without pain, but the script ran out and cannot afford any more doctor visits or tests so I take Zantac OTC only when I have symptoms and that has made all the difference for me... If I am anxious about something, I don't feed the anxiety any food that might cause pain.
