Have you tried Xopenex? It is chemically very close to Ventolin...but without the part that causes jitters and increased heart rate (it doesn't work for me but it does work for many people without all the side effects).

I would see your Dr and get a script for any type of athma med vs. self-medicating. Could be something ventolin might be able to help, but may need more or less and only your Dr can really help you with this . ... it's hard online . WELCOME to our Asthma Community!

If you experience both at the same time, use your medication and go to the emergency room. If you are taking ventolin for asthma, you know that it may speed up your heart rate. Don't wait for an asthma attack to get worse before you seek medical help. Better to be at the emergency room with nothing happening than at home wishing you had gone than.

Do you also have a rescue medication? Some for of albuterol - ProAir, Proventil, Maxair, Ventolin, Xopenex and a few others. This is a necessity for when you have the shortness of breath (sob) feeling. Did the hospital tell you what to do about your potassium level? If you do not get that up, you could start having leg cramps. Advair and Symbicort can cause potassium and calcium levels to drop causing cramps. Take care and feel better.

I take it you are talking about the xopenex ampules and not the xopenex spray? If its the spray then there might be something that can be given to him that is not as strong. Hope this helps.

The only medications that I take religious are my baclofen, meclazine (sp), xopenex inhaler, and ventolin inhaler. However, I did just have solumedrol treatment. They wanted to put me on Topomax for my head aches, but now I'm frightened! They also said they are most likely going to start me on Avonex. I am just plain freaking out and panicked!

thank you so much i have the rescue one xopenex hfa says its levalbuterol. than i have one for night its a powder its asmanex . i have been like this now for 2 months it seems to get better than last night it was not bad but woke me up at 1 could not sleep for coughing and wheezing and scared i was going have a bad attack and die from it , so i need the inhaler just to scared to take it. so are these ok or will the xop cause the heart speed. thank you so much.

Hi, fast heart rate is due to Xopenex. Initially, use of this drug is associated with this side effect but over a period of time, tolerance usually develops. In case if you have a pre exisiting heart disease, please avoid this drug. Consult you treating doctor to lower the dose or frequency, other alternative is sustained release deriphylline tablets.

If you are having troubles with your ventolin not working .... don't be stupid like me. Get a new one and see if it helps. I found out mine was completely empty last night when I woke up last night in an attack and the ventolin didn't work very well. Unfortunately with asthma you cannot treat it without inhalers and medication. Ventolin is going to be the best immediate action inhaler to help open your airways - it is a fairly safe drug and worth it. You MAY need other medications to help lower your overall inflammation which is the cause of asthma symptoms.
