The other item that kept coming up was his attention span. Most of his intellectual skills - cutting, drawing, writing, etc - were up to par.

I have a 6 year old son with autism and asthma who has currently started on the Xopenex for the asthma control. He has become extremely hyperactive and somewhat aggressive with the Xopenex, and I am wondering if there are any other meds that wouldn't have this side effect.
30am coughing non-stop....coughing so much that he vomited! I gave him his Xopenex in the nebulizer, put him in the steamy bathroom, gave him a dose of the steroid.
Throughout the day today, he did okay. He coughed, but not all that bad and he still took his Xopenex every four hours.
Tonight he is in bed . . . Coughing!
Any ideas? He is on so many meds, why doesn't anything stop this cough? If I was coughing like this I would have to take something to make it stop.
Immediately, I felt a tightness in my chest and shortness of breath after taking. I googled acetylcysteine and one of the side effects was shortness of breath and tightness of chest. I have an appointment to see my doctor in 2 weeks (retired vet....appointments these days are hard to get) meanwhile I'm wondering if there are others who have experienced this the drug acetylcysteine with the same side effects.
I stop using it 3 days ago until I see my doctor.
I sympathize for you.. I was looking to get more information myself because my son has been coughing all throughout the night again and I was amazed to find so many parents in the same situation, it was like reading about my own experiences with my son's asthma who is also 2 yrs old. Like you, my son apparantly isn't allergic to anything so I was given a treatment using QVAR in the morning and at bedtime ;however, when he gets a cold his asthma ALWAYS worstens .
I should be getting the nebulizer sooner than the vest. I believe the perscription he wrote for the nebulizer is albuterol.
My first pulmonary doctor had it in his mind that I did not have Bronchiectasis in spite of the CT scan. Up until January, I have not been sick (Since January, I have not been well) and I'm 59. When he got the 2nd CT scan report, it didn't say anything about bronc & he was too lazy to read the CD of the scan.
appreciate the info, problem is I dont currently have a doctor. no medicines either. I was diagnosed in 2005 and have been on advair and xopenex for a nebulizer but since around Dec or so precsriptions ran out and no insurance so dont have a doctor or any medicine. I am making it okay but did need advice about this trip. not sure at this point what to do. I will be traveling with my 2 grandkids 5 and 6 and sure dont need any health scares with them present as their dad just died may 2008.

Although it can cause nervousness and many other ill side effects, bad temper does not seem to be one of them.
The temper could stem from the asthma itself...because she is 6 she is still trying to find ways to express feelings, pain, etc.
It's possible that she's acting this way because she's feeling nervous from the medication or from the asthma itself...remember that it's a scary thing not being able to breath.
It is ok to use all 3 of the medications mentioned. Although rare, albuterol and Advair can cause adverse cardiovascular effects such as hypertension, angina, palpitations, sinus tachycardia, or arrhythmias. Only take these as directed, do not take it more often than instructed by your physician.
(I have had asthma my entire life and at the first signs of a sniffle and some tightness I immediately start a prednisone taper and Xopenex nebulizer). I was prescribed azithromycin and told to continue with my xopenex and prednisone. I also took cough syrup, sudafed and motrin. Saturday I was significantly worse and over the weekend it esciladed. My temperature would go from 96.2 to 100.5 and back down over a 30min period.

I have been using Combivent for about a month together with Asmanex to treat my cough-variant asthma and have had pretty good results. However, the first inhalation of Combivent always triggers a major coughing spell (sometimes it's so severe I almost vomit or my ribs hurt). Are there other bronchodilators that might be easier to inhale and still be effective? Or would using a nebulizer help? I've heard there can be adverse side effects with a nebulizer.
He started out on 25 mg with no side effects. Two weeks after he increased to 50 mg he began a headache - meaning it has not stopped. Here we are, going on week three of a headache. However, my son has been on other medications for sinisitis and bronchitis that could account for a headache. He now off of pulmicort, xopenex and nasonex. He is currently going through allergy testing as well. It is very difficult for me to try to determine the cause of the headache with so much going on with him.
Almost all my meds have stopped working (spiriva, symbicort, advair, etc.) the only meds that have any effect is my xopenex inhaler - even the xopenex solution for my nebulizer causes breathing problems sometimes. Even the oxygen(2 ltrs) is not working as well. If I am setting down I breath very well with or without the oxygen but if I start moving around I must have the oxygen and then I'm still short of breath.
I was taking that dosage. As time went by I developed very serious adrenal fatigue, sometimes so bad that I couldn't walk. Cortisol levels were very high. I was treated for it with only moderate success. But there was a more serious side effect that I was not aware of. For the last two years my lung health was declining seriously and I honestly did not think I would make it through the coming winter. I assumed that the COPD was progressing at an alarming rate.
Is the cough producing mucus? If so, is it easily expelled, or tenacious. If tenacious, take 500 mg. of vitamin B5 daily. (I take 1000 mg.) No side effects.
I have called my doctor numeroud times for the shortness of breath and to see if there is something I can switch to that would not have the same effects with the fatigue and shortness of breath, she assured me that the Bystolic does not exhibit those effects and it could not be the Bystolic doing this to me that the medication has no side effects that I need to be worried about. Yet online all of what I am feeling are stated as side effects of the medication.
We bought 2 guinea pigs 7 days before our 7 yr old began coughing and running a constant low grade temp. WE're now on day 13, but have taken 5 days of z-pac, xopenex nebulizer and codituss cough med with codiene. Her coughing during the day is much improved but as soon as she lies down for bedtime the coughing begins. She coughed over an hour before falling asleep and then coughed almost non-stop from 1:30-6:30 this am. Still running a low-grade temp.
