Xeloda medication

Common Questions and Answers about Xeloda medication

xeloda

Dear roffie, Xeloda (capecitabine) is an oral medication that is changed in the body to 5-flurouracil (5-fu). Xeloda alone has been approved for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer that has not responded to, or has stopped responding to treatment with Taxol and anthracycline containing regimens such as Adriamycin. Because you have had 5-fu in the past does not necessarily mean that Xeloda will be ineffective.
The doctor has suggested the possibility of Xeloda treatment, as opposed to doing nothing at all. I am trying to get an idea of how bad the side effects of this are, because it would be good to take something that would extend her life if the drug doesn't wreck the quality of life she has. At the moment she's just tired a lot, but otherwise able to enjoy family and friends.
The doc wants to put her on Xeloda or Tetrotere (sp?) The doc feels Xeloda is an easier schedule to follow (oral med) and has low side effects. But seriously, how is Xeloda??? I'm worried about cell count going down. My mom is worried about hand/foot syndrome. I'm not a fan of any chemo but she has no other drug choices. Curious your experiences on it.
She has had most of her treatment at the Penn State Medical Center. They checked her stage, which is Stage 3. They are prescribing Xeloda to her now. My question is why are they prescribing this oral medication which treats breast and colon cancer to her?
diahrea, nausea and vomiting, skin reaction of reddening of palms and soles of the feet (hand-foot syndrome), lowering of blood counts. The severity or occurance of these side effects varies and it is impossible to predict what side effects or the severity that an individual will experience. However, there are a variety of ways to help manage side effects that are experienced.

See if the pharmaceutical company producing Xeloda has a medication program for patients such as your mother; people who cannot afford the medication. Ask the physician or the staff at the physician's office for suggestions too.
She had abdomain severe pain. Is it possible for her to take xeloda ?
I am presently covered by BC Excellus through COBRA but will be covered by Medicare effective 10/1/13. I have been required to order the chemotherapy drug I take (Xeloda) through a mail order pharmacy but wonder if I will be able to get the Xeloda through my local Walgreen's now?
the breast cancer metastisized to the lungs. After taxotere and xeloda the tumors are absent from the lungs. Now I am accumulating fluid in the sac around the lung (not in the lung). Have drained it but it comes back. What is a further recommendation of treatment.
Femara, Tomaxifin, and Xeloda. Presently, she is being given a combination of Taxotere and Carboflatin intravenuously. Can anyone please tell me some of the reasons why she may not be responding to treatment and what we can be doing next. Thank You!
my platelets have dropped to 49(australia). istopping the Xeloda for approximately 4 weeks hasn't made them increase. i'm now booked in to see a haematologist and the probability of having a bone marrow biopsy as the breast cancer may have metastitised to my bone marrow thus reducing my platelets.. my question is, my tumour markers are only 290(which I think is still relatively low) so there isn't a real lot of cancer in my body. so why are my platelets so affected???
Had surgery to reinforce spine. after surgery went on radiation therapy with xeloda and tykerb. After radiation ca 27 29 level went to 598 doc changed treatment and went to abraxane and avastin. The results were good for tumor markers down to 57 but chemo took a toll on my wife. Started hormonal therapy she started feel better and every day feeling better. Two days ago took ca 27 29 went up to 380. Doc said not to worry she is safe with his intial exam even though markers were high.
hi there i have been taking xeloda, in the hope that it would reduce the ascites in my stomach but up to yet its made no difference, oncologist doesnt seem to bothered, hes just happy the cancer hasnt spread to my organs. i do have secondaries in the bones though. i only last a week at the moment before it swells up again and have to be drained about once a fortnight, anyone else the same? i know have very swollen legs and feet also.
Has anyone else gained weight with Femara? I was started on it after being given Xeloda (Capecitabine) last year for metastatic breast cancer. Previously I was taking Arimidex (absolutely brilliant for me). I was in remission for approx 7 years until I was taken off it. I checked the stats for Femara and it appears that fewer people survive with this drug than Tamoxofen which it replaces. I also have a lot of pain and muscle contractions now. Hate this drug!
My Husband has Stage 4 Esophageal Cancer he is on treatments for a clinical trial Avastin, Xeloda, Oxaliplatin He has been on the Trial since early March 2010 he was diagnosed the end of February 2010 He is 35 years old and other then the Cancer has been in perfect health the treatments started off well but he developed stage 3-4 Neuropathy in August in his hands and feet. They have continued with the trial with just the Avastin and Xeloda which he is still taking.
All the other drugs are just supportive medication. Xeloda is a cytotoxic (kills cancer cells) oral chemotherapy drug. Oncolet is a form of hormonal treatment designed to reduce the circulating estrogen in your mother's body, thereby reducing the growth stimulus of the cancer cells. I'm not sure how the two drugs are being given to your mother, but it would be better to stop Oncolet while she's still taking Xeloda.
she said that the Arimidex and the drug class it belongs to obviously isn't working so her only options are all of these chemo choices. She recommended Xeloda because 1) well tolerated (I don't know how any chemo is well tolerated) and 2) the cycle its' given is easier than infusions and thought it was best. I have zero clue about the counts you give since I'm not privy to that and she's been doing so amazingly well.

Dr. put her on Xeloda and Tykerb. She is on a 2 week on, 1 week off cycle. Her side effects have been severe. (i.e dehydration, throwing up, no appetite, mouth sores, nausea, you name it, she has it) Her last visit to the Dr. (she goes about twice a week) just yesterday, he told her (in her words) that "everything is shrinking, and you'll have to be on this for the rest of your life. It's like having high blood pressure, you take medicine for the rest of your life to keep it controlled.
Hi, Ask your doctor for a prescrition of antacids and anti nausea medication or a combination of anti reflux and anti nausea medication. This should help her. Also ask him appetite stimulants would help your mother. This after a few days will help her feel better and then you can convince her to take her medication. Be there and support her. Talk to her and tell her that she needs to be strong and fight it out like always.

) My oncologist says that the next step would be Xeloda therapy, but I would like to know whether there should be a renewed search for different metastases (through CT, PET, MRI, etc.)? Would further metastatic discovery make a difference in treatment?
He has no short term memory. The prognosis is less than encouraging for sure. My husband is on Temador, Xeloda, Celebrex, and is having infusion every other week of avastin while on radiation.
Do you know if the tumor markers my wife has can become normal which I think is under 30 or will we just live with a marker under 200? The oral chemotherapy my wife was on before taxol was xeloda. It was a month of failure. I REALLY appreciate your responses and help to the community.
