I have red, dry, flaky spots in the creases of my nose and around my mouth/chin. Sometimes, the dry spots get really chapped and itchy. The flakes start to turn brown after a few days. I had it for months and months and it just kept spreading further around my face. A doctor told me to use a strong moisturizer, which I did for weeks, and it didn't help. When I went back again to see my regular doctor, he said to stop the moisturizer right away, it was probably making it worse--and prescibed me an antibiotic, tetracycline i believe, and it went away in less than 3 weeks -- cleared up completely. Four years later, it hasn't come back yet (which is common). Good luck.

Hi, I have a history of acne, but this rash on my face is different and is strictly around my nose and mouth. Is it Perioral dermatitis? or could it be something else? and what should I do to treat this condition?

Is it normal if you stare at your skin in bright light to see extremely fine lines around the mouth area besides the regular laugh lines further u p closer to the cheek. when i smile i get wrinkles around the eye and upper cheek. when i stop smilling i could see traces of those lines. not very obvious no one can see it only from up close. Is it normal to see such lines? or I am examing my skin too closely.

It gets really dry around my nose,mouth, and chin. I dont get any bumps there, and it doesnt itch. It just gets really dry. It has been like this for about a year or two now & I really want to know what is happening. ITs taking away from my self esteem. Every summer and winter it gets worse. Treatment consists of oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. A mild soap or soap substitute, such as Dove or Cetaphil should be used for washing. Scrubbing should be avoided. Doxycycline is the preferred antibiotic for perioral dermatitis but minocycline can also be used.

Hello, I have been having this weird problem of redness around my nose and mouth.. last night there was no sign of redness and only mild itching, but as soon as I woke up today, I saw the skin around my nose is inflammed. I believe its Perioral Dermatitis but then again I cant make any diagnoses on my own. The past week or so, the patchiness is going up onto the cheeks and even his nose. It is very red/angry looking when wet, and when dry it feels almost scaly. That night I applied 1% Hydocortisone cream all around my mouth and chin....still pink so I applied it again the next night woke up with a red hot burning area around my mouth.....classic but terrible case of hydrocortisone induced perioral dermatitis except that I'm 58 yrs. old!
