Asthma often acts up for a lot of people at night. It often manifests with cough, wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and for some of us we get a lot of mucous too. I would suggest she see a doctor about this if this isn't the first time. pulmonary function tests can be ordered to determine the cause of her symptoms. Sometimes a chest x-ray is called for if the doctor suspects something other then asthma. Does she have day time symptoms too? Does she have allergies?
When you are short of breath what are you doing? Try and think of the things that could trigger this event. If your hot or cold, or wheezing. Does this happen every week or month How often. Are you under any stress that could be giving you anxiety that you havent ever had before? ECG would show up anything that has happened in the past also. My doctor never really explained except to say that I had bronchitis which turned into asthmatic bronchitis. I do not have a history of asthma. So what exactly is asthmatic bronchitis? Does this mean I now have asthma? Also I am using the inhaler when I feel shortness of breath or start coughing uncontrollably is this right or should I only be using it when I have chest tightness?

I have noticed upon waking up in the morning or middle of the night that I have this feeling of dryness! I can't hardly breath the air is so dry. I have to go wet my hands and use lotion. My mom used to get this when I lived with my parents - when the furnace was on. I hope that makes sense (especially the hardly breath part - it is like when you are talking you skip some words or they come out about half...I have had that then I tell my husband when he looks at me weird - dry!! Lol.

What do you mean you have a lot of phlegm? Are you coughing up a lot of phlegm? Then that is related to chronic bronchitis, especially that you have a long smoking history. Spasms in the throat? Maybe you have VCD (vocal chord dysfunction), look it up and see what you think of the symptoms. Mucous in the throat can be due to GERD or Post nasal drip. Even Gerd can give breathing issues. For some their only symptom is a dry cough. What other symptoms do you have outside of shortness of breath?
Yesterday while eating ice cream, I somehow inhaled/choked on it. I immediately started hacking, which normally fixes the problem, but this time it didn't.

The doctors are right in keeping these three possibilities for your symptoms as all three are associated with violent coughing after eating food. Asthma most commonly presents with shortness of breath and wheezing but there are some patients with asthma whose main symptom will be cough. Diagnosed by the use of a methacholine challenge test which can amplify abnormalities on spirometry thus allowing the physician to uncover signs of asthma.
