What should blood sugar readings be

Common Questions and Answers about What should blood sugar readings be

blood-sugar

Avatar f tn I am a type II diabetic and I would like to know what is considered a "good" blood sugar reading for me when I test at different times of the day....before meals, after meals, fasting in the morning, at bedtime and other random times during the day.
Avatar n tn They usually do a two blood test test for the diagnosis. This is a fasting blood sugar test from a predetermined time in the evening the night before the test, then they give you a drink with as many calories in it as in the average meal then check the blood sugar two hours later to see if the body is doing it's job. My test was 30 years ago and i still remember it: fasting 480 and two hour 660, which left the doctors no doubt. i didn't know then either what was good or bad.
Avatar f tn That would be what would tell you how concerned you should be with your blood sugar number. What the doctor is watching whether you need some form of insulin to keep your sugar to a acceptable level.
Avatar f tn m to inform her if 3 of my blood sugar readings fasting are higher than 130 and if 3 blood sugar readings 2 hrs. after eating are higher than 180. So, that sounds normal for us type 2 diabetics. If you were to take another pill, it would go to low, IMO. Hope this helps you!
1305767 tn?1361192676 I've never been diagnosed with diabetes but I started checking my blood sugar today out of curiosity. When I eat I tend to "graze" a lot so I eat small portions through out the day. Today I pretty much snacked on plain donuts all day, had like two bowls of cereal and actual dinner about 6:30 pm. I checked my blood sugar at least 5 times all at various intervals and my readings were all between 80 and 100. I just checked it now after drinking some hot chocolate and it's 106.
1680047 tn?1468911829 140-180 two hours after eating would be too high. Your stated values of fasting blood sugar readings are high, according to my doctor.
1080243 tn?1262975363 High blood sugar, if this is what your husband has, ARE a sign of diabetes. They are usually not a sign of anything else (unless someone is sick or on steroids, in which case levels can be temporarily high). Initially they can be the only obvious sign, which is why it is so important that people have diabetes screening at their annual checkups. Your husband should be looking into this with his doctor further and taking appropriate steps to manage it.
Avatar n tn s husband did a comparison test and his number was normal at 86 would seem to indicate that the machine is NOT giving false numbers. Her blood sugar probably really IS that high, and this is extremely dangerous -- could be life-threatening. It really is imperative that she have a true lab test done to see if there really is a blood sugar problem. She could do a glucose test in the lab to compare the number with the number that the lab gets if she thinks that her machine is in error.
Evillady My husband is type 2diabetic, and he takes pills for it and he ate a burrito and 1 1/2 hours later he checked his sugar and read 228. What is a good number it should be and go up to, before it is to high.
Avatar m tn Check if it can raise your blood sugar levels. Some high blood pressure medicine can raise the sugar levels. Know your body. It is the inly one you will have.
Avatar f tn Most people do not consider blood sugar to be low and in need of treatment unless it is under 70 or even under 60. However, if your blood sugar has been high for awhile than numbers that are not technically hypos can feel like they are. If you have diarrhea since last Thursday and not able to eat (regardless of your need to lose weight) you should check with your doctor as you can become dehydrated.
5700226 tn?1389042555 I know that during the holidays, I did not eat as well as I should have. But could my bad eating be causing these higher readings that I am getting now? Will my numbers eventually get back to what I was reading before? I am eating about the same as I was when I was getting the good numbers before.
Avatar f tn t explain things to you such as how the prednisone influences the blood sugar and what you should be doing to treatyour diabetes, you may need to see an endo. Also, if you want, send me a private message and I will give you the name of a couple websites where there are a lot of diabetics and I'm sure someone will be able to explain the role of prednisone.
Avatar m tn You could also ask your doctor about the option fror starting on insulin. Actual ideal blood sugar levels should be in the range of 80 - 120 all the time. Fasting should be < 100. You are only 50, young, and it is important to control your diabetes well to be sure you don't face complications down the line. Diet for diabetes should be low carb / high fat / moderate protein. This is the most recent recommendation. You can research this online easily.
Avatar n tn Your fasting blood sugar should be cloer to 100 and you want your post prandials under 140. Other factors you can control blood sugar with as a type 2 include exercise, lowering carb intake and weight loss if needed. Do you have lows that make your blood sugar average out to 6.2? There is a forumula that shows what average blood sugars are for each A1C but I can't find it at the moment. I would try the other things I mention before adding another med.
Avatar m tn This morning i took my blood test (not a diabetic, trying to rule out low blood sugar that may cause some symptoms im having) and it ranged from 118 right when i woke up to 95 when i got moving. Is too much blood on the strip bad? should i just have enough on the strip to allow a reading and take my finger away? it seemed that my readings were lower when it got just enough blood to get a reading and i took my finger away. also, how fast does a sport drink like gatorade raise your blood sugar?
325405 tn?1262290178 I also know that gestational diabetes is more strict with blood sugar levels than regular type II diabetes. Now that I have type II, what are the ranges to aim for for blood sugar levels for fasting and then for 2 hours after a meal? Right now, I'm testing about 100 to 110 in the morning and about 110 to 130 after meals. If I forget to take my metformin at night, my fasting level is usually around 120 to 130. But, with the medicine it is 100 to 110 fasting. Is this good?
Avatar n tn it could very well be. you need to keep a record of what you eat the time and when your blood is at its lowest. mark your calendar. then take it to your doctor this should give him a big clue about what is going. but if you are really getting that confused. maybe you should go to your doctor now. good luck.
246464 tn?1249452147 Also suggest you carry glucose tablets or hard candies [not sugar free] with you in case a crash occurs. Eat one to elevate your blood sugar rapidly. Dropping below 60 is dangerous, down to 34 is life threatening.
Avatar n tn I just found out that I'm pregnant, and my blood sugar is literally all over the place. One hour it will be 140, and the next hour it will be 240. I have another week until my endocrinologist appointment, and I am VERY NERVOUS. PLEASE HELP!? What can I do to keep it down until my Dr appointments? I'm limiting my carbs, and excercising. What else can i do?
Avatar f tn 278mg/dl and as I understood it should be under 200. Her HDL-cholesterol is 55mg/dl and DLL-cholesterol is 179mg-dl. And the triglyceride is : 309mg/dl when it's supposed to be under 150. The last one especially is too high I think. The doctor said to exercise more and avoid certain types of food but is this enough or should she take some other kind of medication. Blood sugar is 98, when at 100 it's considered elevated. She's close to this and I wonder if it poses any danger.
Avatar f tn i know that childrens blood pressure is different so could you tell me if i should be worried about his sugar. Is 154 too high for a three year old? what should i do? should i take him for blood work? or should i try it again tomorrow morning before he eats or drinks and see what it is? this morning when we checked it i had a little problem with the blood. i had to ***** his finger three times before the machine would read it. it kept saying it didn't have enough blood to read.
539156 tn?1281818356 If 148 is the average reading for your fasting blood sugar, than that is diabetic level. Fasting blood sugar readings should be less than 100 and ideally 80-90. Unless you know what your blood sugar readings have been with and without food, you can assume from your reading of 148 IF it's fasting, that you have had diabtes all these years. I am surprised that your family doctor did not keep on top of this. I am a former diabetic that was insulin and pill dependent.
