Common Questions and Answers about What is the medication trileptal used for

trileptal

Avatar f tn Trileptal is an anticonvulsant (used as a mood stabilizer for bipolar), and Lexapro is an antidepressant called an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor). If you are having problems with mania you might want to talk to your doctor about adding an antipsychotic. There are so many too many to list and there can be so many different combinations too. You should talk to your doctor about the specific symptoms you are having...
Avatar m tn Thanks for your info on how Trileptal works for Tregeminal Neuralgia. I would be interested to see how it works with other people as well, in place of Carbamazapine and Gabapentin so I have some ammunition when I see my neurologist. I don't think Gabapentin is doing much if anything for me, I am currently taking 2700 mg per day in addition to Carbamazapine.
1108262 tn?1273179266 Talk to your doc more about it and read more about the drug to decide if it is right for you. Like I said, the hyponatremia was the big problem for me, and may not be for you. Also, you may read lots of stories on the internets about drug interactions for bipolar people- unfortunately it seems the case that many drugs must be tried to find the right one. A good doctor can be a great help in navigating this situation, and I wish you the best.
Avatar n tn When it gets to the extremes as you have said it does, if it causes problems, you might need medication. What is the depakote prescribed for? The above sure sounded like a lot of medication. I hope this helps.
1212999 tn?1272305203 Trileptal was not quite that effective for me although every person reacts differently to each medication. If the Trileptal is raised you may encounter these side effects at an increased rate. It might make sense for your psychiatrist to add another medication but there may be some interactions so he might want to change or adjust the medications you are on but that's their decision. This is a list of all current mood stabilizers that you could discuss with them: http://www.psycheducation.
728313 tn?1260459629 Trileptal should be introduced slowly. You probably felt so out of it because your brian was trying to get used to so much at once when you shouldn't have been taking it at all. That kind of fogginess is actually a normal (and very inconvenient) side effect when you begin taking any anti-convulsant. The long term side effect associated with taking Trileptal is liver damage. It must be monitored and a blood panel must be taken on a regular basis to make sure your liver is OK.
Avatar f tn I know they can handle themselves, but I feel as if I am the protector. The medication I take is Trileptal 150mg and Seroquel 50mg. I have no problems with the Trileptal its the seroquel I dont want to take because of the groggy, zombie rush me into sleep feeling.
Avatar f tn in 2000 i was diagonosed with biopolor disorder i had my assorment of drug theropy i ended with a cocktale of trileptal, trazadone and lexapro when i found out i was pregnat in 2004. They took me off all my meds and have been med free until about 6 months ago when i went completely off the wall...They then put me on lexapro and ativan.. I went to a psychiotrist 3 weeks ago who took me off both of those meds and put me on Seroquel 150mg and trileptal 1200mg.
Avatar n tn What your describing is very similar to what i experienced coming off of effexor. The whole weaning process took me 5 months before i was off the drug. It was a horrible withdrawal with intense pounding headaches stemming from brain shocks/shivers. I also experienced aches and pains along with body tremors. You should speak to your doctor about perhaps clonazepam or some kind of medication to ease you through this time. It can be done. What medication will you be taking in place of trileptal?
Avatar f tn I was told to begin weaning off my medication (Trileptal). Since reducing the medication by 150 mg, I am once again experiencing TN pain triggered by chewing, talking, washing my face, etc. Is this normal when weaning off anti-seizure medications used for TN?
1100992 tn?1262357216 if you compare tegretol with depakote or lithium the 3 most famous classical old drugs for BP and mainly for mania then tegretol is the least harmful and this i read everywhere. So if you consider an MS then tegretol is your best bet. Sure you will need from time to time to do some blood tests (not with trileptal) but at least it won't make you put excessive weight or hair loss like depakote or the other known side effects like lithium BTW egyptian doctors write it all the time.
Avatar f tn s not uncommon for a person to take years to find the right medication combination for bipolar disorder so don't give up and try to remember that you just need to be patient if you get discouraged because it's not working.
Avatar f tn After only a week of being on this medication for the stabbing pain behind my right eye I feel horrible do the side effects eventually get better or should I stop taking it
Avatar f tn I currently take Trileptal for Partial Seizures (my seizures are well controlled with it) but whenever I miss 2 doses in a row (which I obviously try not to), I experience numbness and tingling in my face and head. I know these are symptoms of MS and I know Trileptal can be used for MS patients to help with nerve issues. I guess my question is should I see my neurologist? Is it possible that this face numbness/tingling sensations are symptoms of MS? FYI I am a 33 yr old female.
Avatar f tn when he saw his neuro and therapist he should have told them what he was taking, that way they would make sure that the meds they prescribe don't react badly to each other. i think you should try get them together to have a chat with both of them. there are some anti-epileptics out there that actually act as mood stabilizers as well, the two that i know of is sodium valproate and lamotrigine. i'm not too sure if they can be used for dual purpose but it's worth a shot right?
Avatar f tn s common or uncommon but its not rare. Trileptal is similar clinically but better in one way in that the blood test is not required. I found that lithium worked well but had some trouble tolerating it for other reasons that were physical but did very well on Lamictal especially on rapid cycling. Each person reacts diffferently though. Speak to your psychiatrist about what is going on and if other options might be considered.
674607 tn?1240017232 you are saying glycine is not approved as an MS like the rest of the AP's, but i've assumed that it is an off-label MS for bipolars like abilify and seroquel. Being a 3rd generation might help her in this noisy combo. He is taking lithium in addition to lamotrigine which is more than enough. I wonder why he is adding an AD effexor it looks like a salad dressing to me. People are put on MS in order to get rid of their AD. In any case it seems he hasn't found the right combo.
Avatar m tn My wife has been taking Tegretol 200mg X 3 tines a day, this has caused her to be disorientated and nauseous & still in pain, she is trying Trileptal 300mg X 3, whilst cutting out the Tegretol. My question is how much Trileptal can she take ??????
Avatar n tn Stelazine, this medication is used for psychosis or short-term for anxiety. How long have you been taking Stelazine? Re: trileptal, there is limited data on effectiveness for bipolar. If it's working for you, no reason to discontinue it, but there may be bettter options. Are you experiencing any side effects from your meds?
Avatar f tn I too took Tegretol and gained weight (35 lbs in 3 wks). I thought I would never lose it but after my body became used to the drug, this took about 6 months, I was able to lose the weight quit quickly with an easy walking plan. It only took about about a month. In the end it was the only medication that would stop 4 of my 11 seizures so in my opinion --the wait was worth it.
5032487 tn?1365824021 Trileptal is off label for BP, but it's used pretty frequently. It's apparently the new improved version of Tegretol, with fewer side effects. Topomax is also used off label, but it's gotten the nickname of dopomax because it causes cognitive issues in a fair number of people. It does tend to make you lose weight, though. I personally would go for Trileptal above Topomax, but I'm doing fine on Lamictal so it's a bit of a moot point.
1134609 tn?1269272200 I tend to teeter towards the manic side of the disorder; not hypomania, but agitated manic phases. The Seroquel really put me in a bad place; it was strange. Plus, I have to be careful of some of the medication as my family has a history of being overweight. I gained a huge amount of weight when placed on Celexa and I couldn't lose it. So, Depakote may be out of the question.
Avatar m tn I was on Trileptal for a while. After that my psychiatrist transferred me to Lamictal. It took some time to have the withdrawal symptoms to pass (and the efficacy of the other medication to start) but it settled after some time. Generally things begin to improve within a few weeks. As long as you followed your psychiatrist's titration schedule it should be fine. Keep your psychiatrist updated on how you are doing and they will know how to follow up.
