Common Questions and Answers about What is the drug propranolol used for

inderal

Avatar n tn Well, its most common use is for anxiety - which is fairly common for people with ADHD. You can read more about it here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propranolol What I don't understand is why your doctor didn't explain this to you. Especially if you are prone to anxiety, the not knowing only makes it worse.
Avatar f tn I know propranolol is used for PTSD...but what should I ask for in the pharmacy and what is the dosage? Are there any serious effect if taken without proper knowledge?
Avatar m tn Your drug is also used for anxiety, usually social anxiety, so it might be helping. But when you're obsessive about something, the only way to overcome it is to stop doing it. If you think taking the drug isn't helping but is just obsessive, a good therapist, probably one who specializes in CBT, might help guide you through this. But if you feel you're going to need medication, well, you're on one used for anxiety that's easier to stop taking than most.
1243620 tn?1274790697 Having wrote that, Propranolol carries a significantly higher rate of side effects compared to other beta-blockers, and for that reason it is rarely the first one selected. Additionally, it carries many drug-drug interactions, particularly when combined with psychiatric drugs. Propranolol is the prototype for the beta-blocker class. It tends to easily cross the blood-brain barrier, and may induce depression or worsen pre-existing depression.
Avatar f tn Propranolol also helps to reduce the palpitations, sweating, and tremor of severe anxiety and is also used to prevent migrane headaches. STOPPING THE DRUG Do not stop the drug without consulting your doctor. Abrupt cessation ( suddenly stopping the drug) may lead to worsening of the underlying condition.
Avatar n tn I also take the Propranolol twice a day for my heart. The Propranolol was prescribed for my heart and never for anything else. Now I am currently taking Propranolol in the morning along with Paxil, at night I take Propranolol again. I take the Klonopin is taken as needed twice a day.
Avatar m tn My doctor just recommend a new med called nebivolol (bystolic) to me thst im pretty hesitant to try as propranolol does help Most out of what ive tried. The nebivolol bystolic didnt get the besr reviews from what ive seen. thats just my experiences and what things have worked and not worked for me on an individual basis. I feel some of my pvcs are caused by anxiety, some by exercise or increase in working out and some by large meals.
Avatar f tn I think it is done for sure but check with your gp. Your psych says it's okay. He's a medical doctor and well versed on this type of situation as well. What about this though? If you have an anxiety issue, what about a longer term treatment of that? Talk therapy is pretty helpful and a long term medication at a low dose may conquer your anxiety overall. Are you anxious about other things?
Avatar f tn t appear to have made a difference for my wife. She used it for almost 10 years at 100mg max for 50% of that time. She was tirated off of it in December 2014 and she had no change in symptoms. She has had better success with a treatment called EEG Neurofeedback. If you need to use a drug ask your Doctor if you can try a drug called Maxalt or similar drug (it is relatively costly though). EEG Neurofeedback is non invasive and one can sometimes see changes within a few visits.
Avatar f tn He has not revealed to his MD that he had taken this overdose. He is going for a follow-up tomorrow and tell the doctor. He does not drink and has never taken drugs, untilt his event. This was not his prescription of propranolol, it was a family memebers. can this be drug induced hepatitis, can it be reversed, or is it usually permanent damage. If in fact this is drug induced hepatitis, does the dmage continue, or did it stop after the drugs were out of his system? Thanks for any help.....
Avatar n tn It is far worse when in a social situation or when doing a task like cutting veggies or writing, not all the time, but sometimes. The typical treatment for this is propranolol (a beta blocker) and if there is anxiety along with it, then clonazepam too. The propranolol will help with the shakes and also anxiety, but if the anxiety is more pronounced and/or with panic attacks then my guess would be that the doctor would prescribe clonazepam with it.
Avatar m tn It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
Avatar f tn this is known as off labeling...where a drug is intended for one purpose but used for another....in this case insomnia......
4155003 tn?1351614311 Who am I to argue with a learned doctor, but the PDR, THE pharmaceutical tome containing a trillion tons of drug knowledge........is the source of the algorithm for the elimination of propranolol from your system. I don't doubt that even after you have completely withdrawn from a psychotropic, a very small percentage will remain in your body for "X" amount of time.
Avatar f tn As far as evidence goes, the only problem this has been shown to help with are those with heart palpitations that are real and not imagined and those with social anxiety. Prozac isn't the best antidepressant for anxiety because it tends to be stimulating, so I'm guessing your main problem is anxiety. Only trying this drug will tell you if it will work, but it certainly was never approved for this purpose. It does help some. It doesn't appear to help most.
Avatar m tn Propranolol is not on the list of contraindicated drugs for Harvoni. Here is the list: http://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/ledipasvir-sofosbuvir,harvoni-index.
Avatar n tn I originally was taking it for anxiety, but now i feel as though it is good for my drug problem and saves me from having a heart attack. Is this true? Because I feel as though the propranolol slows down my heart rate and makes my pulse lower than it would be if i just did coke. I'm trying to fix my problem but i want to know if the combination of coke and propranolol is dangerous. Please provide me with an answer.
Avatar f tn Hello!. Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with propranolol therapy are similar to other lipophilic beta blockersBeta blockers, including propranolol, have an additive effect with other drugs which decrease blood pressure, or which decrease cardiac contractility or conductivity. So the short story is that"yes"it probably is the beta blocker. But saying that see how you get on with them,it will take at least one- two weeks to really settle down.
Avatar n tn After 25 years of trying to correct hyper-cholesterol and triglycerides, I find triglycerides tricky. Triglyceride levels can quickly change depending on diet and exercise levels; certainly a high-sugar/low exercise regimen will raise them substantially. Also, any drug that slows the heart rate will have an effect on one's metabolism. Beta Blockers, Ace Inhibitors and Calcium blockers all can lower the heart rate, and I wonder if it could raise triglycerides?
Avatar m tn HI......glad you found something that worked for you celexa is an antidepressant and many take it for its antianxiety property's it also helps with the post withdrawal depression that is so common stick with it for a wile then have you doctor ween you off it....I have taken it on and off for years for bipolar disorder .......
Avatar n tn This condition can also cause nails to become brittle with longitudinal ridges. Named for French physician Maurice Raynaud (1834 - 1881), the cause of the phenomenon is believed to be the result of vasospasms that decrease blood supply to the respective regions. Emotional stress and cold are classic triggers of the phenomenon, and the discoloration follows a characteristic pattern in time: white, blue and red.
Avatar m tn I have researched another similar drug called propanolol which was used in an experiment to control the emotional effects of painful memories. What is the data on the long term usage of atenolol?
Avatar f tn The diarrhea makes me just a teensy bit more suspicious of something like masto, which would go along with all of that happening despite you being lying down. Any way you can convince a doctor to do some thorough testing to rule out MCAD and mastocytosis? I can direct you to more info on those if you're not familiar with them. I know, I owe you some other articles too.
1828749 tn?1317778518 As a long term sufferer I advise you to get a definate diagnosis of your arrythmia - then treat it with the appropriate drug therapy. I have SVT and take atenalol, which is a beta blocker, but for other kinds of irregularities sometimes calcium channnel blockers are more suitable. As is something wrong says, you must not change medication unless its under the doctor's supervision otherwise you may suffer dire consequences. Wrong medication kills thousands of people a year as it is.
Avatar f tn So, I started researching it and have found that it is not generally used for someone with generalized anxiety but usually for those that have anxiety in certain situations. I wake up and go to sleep with a lump of anxiety in my chest. I also read that it is not good to use regularly for someone with asthma. Any suggestions or feedback on your experiences with this?
