Common Questions and Answers about What is the drug namenda used for

namenda

Avatar n tn Namenda is used to treat Alzheimer's dementia. This suggests a positive diagnosis for Alzheimers. Find out if this is so. Plavix is a controversial drug. It prevents clotting. It also increases the possibility of a stroke from a bleed. One question in my mind is whether he had a stroke which caused him to fall, or he fell and struck his head and sustained a concussion or bleed inside the brain which, in turn caused the dementia. You need to question his physicians.
Avatar f tn I don't have a question but I wanted to put this out there in hopes that it may help others. I thought I had posted this before but I couldn't find it. I live with severe nerve pain from a botched root canal where formaldehyde was used. The material was squirted out the bottom of my bottom back molar into the nerve canal. Formaldehyde does on the living, just exactly what it does on the dead....mummifies.
585414 tn?1288941302 Yes I am somewhat familiar with that. For example Namenda which is used to treat dementia is in clinical study as a mood stabilizer and to treat tardive dyskinesia. However as those medications specifically effect those receptors by mitigating their activity they work in an opposite manner to glycine and the NMDA receptor modulates.
Avatar n tn I would discuss the side effects with the doctor if she is not getting any benefit and take her off. I know we tried my FIL on risperadil and he got worse so he came off after a couple weeks. The medications may benefit some, but not all - and certainly let the doctor know. BTW my father in law has similar affect in that he thinks everyone is conspiring, lying etc.
Avatar f tn com/namenda-side-effects-drug-center.htm What dose is she on? Maybe adjusting her dose will decrease the dizziness. Talk to her doctor.
Avatar n tn No need to worry. I used to teach classes on different Alzheimer's Medical treatments/medicines and know these meds better than the reps that sold them. Namenda is an add on Alzheimer's medication use to help glutamate regulation in the brain. The standard dose in 20mg a day after titration, so taking three 5mg tablets is not a problem.
767538 tn?1276575320 hope the namenda helps) it REALLY helps with the depression and I would gladly do it again knowing what I know now.
20003388 tn?1515166040 m just curious if anyone has been on Namenda and could tell me how long the initial brain fog lasted for you? I just started Namenda yesterday, 5 mg a day for 1 week then 10 mg a day in divided doses. I have memory issues and severe cognitive impairment. I was put on Namenda by a neurologist after a thorough examination. I expect the brain fog from starting Namenda up but am just trying to get a time frame for when I could expect the initial brain fog to wear off. Thanks everyone.
Avatar m tn Have you tried off-label Namenda at 25% of the dose given to the typical patients that it is meant for? That drug has significantly helped my migraines. And what about Botox injections? That does not interact with your body systemically. Those have helped me tremendously. If you haven't tried these, I would consider them before taking Phenobarbital, but it's up to your judgment of course.
Avatar n tn Have you tried any of the anti-epileptics? Usually the first one that is tried is Topamax. That helped me for awhile. The only side effects that I had from it were some numbness and tingling in my hands and feet. They say that is pretty normal. I also tried Lamictal, Keppra, and Depakote. The drug that I have found the most relief from is actually an Alzheimer's drug. It is called Namenda. There has been some research that has shown that it helps to prevent migraine.
Avatar f tn this is known as off labeling...where a drug is intended for one purpose but used for another....in this case insomnia......
901222 tn?1399142874 Lyrica (pregabalin) is a GABA analogue, similar to Neurontin (gabapentin). Even though pregabalin is approved for The results are still out on whether or not people suffer neurological dependance on this medication. People using high doses of pregabalin (> 1000 mg/day) report problems stopping this medication. My attitude about certain reported side-effects, like weight gain, is that I'll never know what they'll do to me until I try.
Avatar m tn You can find her posts in the archives, and she should be a good source for you. However, glutamate is considered largely for depression because it is stimulating to the brain, not calming. On the other hand, if you reduce glutamate and, presumably, one of its precursors, glutamine, you run the risk of muscle wasting. It is also involved with GABA production.
Avatar m tn Ativan is an anti-anxiety medication. Seroquel (the brand name for the other medication you speak of) is an antipsychotic and from what the prescription label states it should not be used in people who are elderly who have dementia but you could discuss this with a neurologist, in the meantime look up the medication website. Namenda is one of several medications that helped some family members I know who have dementia.
Avatar f tn thank you for the information. I expect there is nothing we can do for or about the condition as it is age related. Is there anything to watch out for?
Avatar n tn When I read how your mom was on Zoloft and Namenda - this is exactly what my dad is on so I thought I would ask you how your mom is/was doing. Did she stay on Risperdone? Thank you so much for your response.
Avatar n tn s is marked by a decrease in glucose in the brain (the primary source of food for the brain), Axona acts by providing/metabolizing glucose in the body to act as an alternate source of food for the brain. It is an FDA-regulated therapy and is the only Alzheimer's treatment which can be used in conjunction with a patient's current medication (e.g., Aricept, Namenda, etc.). For more information I'd advise you to visit www.about-axona.com. Hope this information was useful.
Avatar n tn I came across some soma and really do not know what it is for. is it a narcotic? is it addictive?
Avatar f tn Getting to the nut and gritty of the cognitive areas effected, what is or has caused it and immediate OT brain training etc would be the before steps i'd be taking, i'd really need the answers to the important questions because if its big deal stuff you need to know! Hugs.........
