917008 tn?1251223979 Hydromorphone is used in medicine as an alternative to morphine and diacetylmorphine for analgesia and as a second- or third-line narcotic antitussive (cough suppressant) for cases of dry, painful, paroxysmal coughing resulting from continuing bronchial irritation after influenza and other ailments, inhalation of fungus and other causes, and is generally regarded to be the strongest of the latter class of drugs, and was developed shortly after another powerful antitussive, heroin, was removed fr
Avatar f tn Tuck that was a really good answer. Have you heard of the ones that doctors use in their office? It is like an automatic test. The urine is placed in the receptacle and it supposedly shows different types of drugs in the system. I'm asking as a friend of mine told me about this.
775302 tn?1253100505 I'm on the Opana for BT pain and the Kadian is one every 12 hours. There is an Opana extended release but i'm not on that one. I've gone to all the websites and I just can't seem to figure out what the difference is I've even put in Oxymorphone vs. hydramorphone in the google box! Beleive me I've goggled my heart out. But thanks for getting back to me so quick.
Avatar f tn Hydromorphone and hydrocodone are both semi-synthetic opioids, but hydromorphone is a much stronger pain reliever -- about 10 times stronger than hydrocodone. btw, hydrocodone does not contain acetaminophen. Medications like Vicodin and Norco contain both hydrocodone and acetaminophen, but hydrocodone is itself a semi-synthetic opioid, similar to oxycodone.
Avatar f tn Now you are worrying about the issue when you could have explained it that day and have it behind you. Honesty is really the best way to approach something like this. Honestly, I have been on a serious amount of pain medication for many years. I do have drug test but I know I would not put up with a doctor with the attitude you are describing. Remind yourself, you are paying this person to provide a service. You sound like you have a good history with this doctor, he should be understanding.
Avatar f tn Hi Snobuny, Welcome to our Pain Management Forum. You've asked a good question and although it may seem straight forward there's a lot to be considered. Oxymorphone is seven times stronger then morphine while hydromorphone is five times stronger than morphine. They are in the same synthetic family of drugs. Although on "paper" Oxymorphone is more potent then Hydromorphone that doesn't necessarily mean that one is more effective then the other.
Avatar f tn I think a few of our members have tried rhe extended relief versions of both the hydromorphone and the oxymorphone and have reported good pain relief with both. I haven't tried either in extended release, so I'm not of much direct help. I agree with Ashelen that you should talk to the doctor about it and see if one works with your lifestyle and pain levels more than others. I don't know if xanax is as much of an issue as a resp.
Avatar m tn Oxycodone (with and without tylenol) and Hydrocodone are both not recommended due to the additional metabolism by the liver into oxymorphone and hydromorphone, respectively. There is still some work on the liver regardless to process opioids but Fentanyl, Dilaudid (hydromorphone), and Opana (oxymorphone) put less strain on the liver. Please keep us updated on how you are feeling and the status of your transplant. I wish you all the best!
981443 tn?1250115802 Endo has been the major distributor of oxymorphone throughout the world and currently markets oxymorphone in the United States and elsewhere as Opana and Opana ER. Opana is available as 5 mg and 10 mg tablets; Opana ER, an extended-release form of oxymorphone, is available as tablets in strengths of 5 mg, 7½ mg, 10 mg, 15 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg, and 40 mg.
Avatar f tn The urine test WILL show the difference in the two medications. Vicodin is HYDROcodone, which is different than OXYcodone, different drug, different chemical breakdown and different metabolites. Why did you run out of your prescribed vicodin early? The prescriptions are supposed to last 30 days, if you are taking them exactly as prescribed, you should not run out early.
1386425 tn?1280119158 this has been going on for almost a month were hes mixing all these meds....now heres the kicker...he had an appendectomy and thats what started the mixing of pills..i cant tell his doctor bc honestly idk wat he would do and we dont have insurance to pay for a methadone clinic...anyways he recently started having uncontrolable shakes and tonite was particularly worse...i thought he was screwing with me bc he was great all day...
Avatar f tn not exactly..oxy in theory is a bit stronger than hydro..and sub is a different type of narcotic than the other 2..but conversoin charts do compare the strength of sub to other narcotics..but it is not really the effect they r comparing//but the strength...i do believe there is a conversion chart in avisg's journal...
Avatar f tn There is also short acting dilaudid (hydromorphone) or opana (oxymorphone) - oxymorphone is stronger than hydromorphone. The fentanyl patch strengths go up to 100 mcg/hr and the prescription leaflet shows dosing up to 300 mcg/hr so there is a lot of wiggle room with the fentanyl patches to hopefully give her some relief. That is fabulous that her cancer is in remission!!! Often even when this occurs, extreme pain can still be left behind from the treatments - especially radiation therapy.
Avatar m tn Opana worked well for me... But I have never had a med that works as long as it is supposed to! Have you ever tried Exalgo? It is hydromorphone instead of oxymorphone. I've done both but I'm on MS Contin for my extended release right now, it works well. Low dose ER meds only help to take the edge off so that the instant release works a little better. Maybe you should try a new IR like Roxie's, nucynta, or dilaudid.
Avatar f tn even though the shot was a few weeks before the urine test i seem to be under the impression that there is still a chemical that can still be detected, and is it true the hydrocodone metabolizes in the body and it will show a false positive for dilaudid thank you
Avatar f tn I agree that your pharmacist has all the information that you need regarding your new prescription for the dilaudid. Dilaudid is hydromorphone. Opana is oxymorphone. Dilaudid is slightly weaker than the Opana so you may notice that you need more medication to achieve the same amount of pain relief. I would also contact your doctor and explain to him what happened and get it fixed. I hope the short acting medications are helpful for your pain with less side effects.
494669 tn?1275362475 wow finally the doc believed me. but i am now informed that the pain is due to the fsgs and i will have to live with it and just take pain meds. i am so frustrated with that. i am in so much pain. it is really unbearable. i cry most nights. it ***** i have to live with it but glad i am finally believed.
Avatar f tn I have been trying to google this and find out what I can in the difference between these 2 areas as far as where lesions present in different areas. So far I have only become more confused. Thank you in advance.
29837 tn?1414534648 Long acting opioids include MS Contin, Kadian, Avinza (these are morphine based), Butrans patch (patch is worn for 7 days), Fentanyl patch (patch is worn for 48-72 hours - this is the long acting medication that I use and I find it extremely effective), Opana ER (oxymorphone), Exalgo (hydromorphone). I have also tried MS Contin and Opana ER. Fentanyl Transdermal has been the most effective and consistent pain medication for me compared to the others I have tried.
696943 tn?1229366600 Does anyone know the difference between Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder?
Avatar f tn I'm taking Opana ER 10 mg and it's not on the list of approved drugs for my new RX plan. Fentanyl patches weren't effective. What's a good substitute? oxymorphone is not listed but hydromorphone is.
Avatar f tn By now with the soboxin the OC WD is close to being over , and my understanding is soboxin is to get off opaites in a reasonable time! If I can drop to .5 or less within aweek I can't see why I shouldnt be off completely? I didn't say I haven't felt bad this past couple weeks but I feel better then day 4 cold turkey!
387767 tn?1345872027 Just wondering, what's the difference between the Weight Loss and the Dieting communities? I never know where to post.
Avatar n tn With a nod toward the concerns listed in the earlier posts, the closest thing to oxycodone available is oxymorphone, which is sold as Opana and Opana ER. It is exactly twice the potency of oxycodone; I actually prefer it for treatment of pain in the cases that an opiate is required because the ER formulation, at least in my experience, seems to be a 'true 12 hour med' whereas patients sometimes come up short on oxycontin when it is dosed twice per day.
Avatar m tn Since this is in the Oxymorphone category, is it the same or stronger than MS Contin. I take 40mg of MSContin (long lasting) every 12 hours but it does nothing for my pain - never has even after a Hysterectomy with a Morohine pump in 2001. I'd like to ask my Dr. about this, but if it's the same thing......no need to I guess. Message me if you'd like.
