Common Questions and Answers about What is risperidone used for

risperdal

574118 tn?1305135284 there are other sites which mention the maximum dose of both. max for risperidone is 9 while for seroquel is 900. also based on DDD it's 80. when you say equivalence it isn't the drug content but the potency as far the need for the drug. seroquel brochure says 900 don't exceed it while risperidone 9. you see it's a homework i did i am not a pdoc to judge my conclusion but i tried to work out the ratio.
Avatar n tn t know what the dosage was, or what else it may have been combined with. The antidote for Risperidone-induced EPS is an anticholinergic. While Benadryl can be used in a pinch, the more common (more potent) agents are Cogentin (Benztropine) and Artane (Trihexyphenidyl). Those are both anti-Parkinson agents that are used to reverse EPS. The half-life of Risperidone is 20 hours. So approximately 1/2 of the administered dosage would be eliminated in a day.
Avatar f tn While yes, weight gain appears to lesser of the problems she is facing, I cannot suggest whether going back to the drug risperidone will help or not. What I can suggest is that in cases with ADHD, explosive disorders and autism it is often helpful to seek therapy. Along with drugs individual therapy often helps deal with thoughts and emotions. I suggest you talk to your daughter's doctor and find out other options available. Take care!
Avatar m tn My question is on tapering risperidone how long does one need to taper risperidone from a dose of 1mg to 0.5mg in days or weeks?.
1260240 tn?1336077448 Prozac is a medication commonly used to treat anxiety whereas risperidone is an antipsychotic that is used to treat irritability and behavior problems in individuals with autism-spectrum disorders. The best that I can tell you is that the medication may help. The most important thing is to make sure that you have a psychiatrist that you work well with and who is responsive to your needs.
Avatar f tn Because of the developmental disability is is difficult to find a doctor that really knows what to do where I live. It seems I have to present ideas to them. I am not liking how zombie like the seroquel is making her. I wish she can tell me how she is feeling.
Avatar m tn I am in full blown withdrawal from risperidone and my psychiatrist is out of town.I got side effects(involuntary movements) so had to quit.My doc will be back 4 days from now.Any suggestions.
Avatar f tn First, I can find no indication that risperdal is indicated for ADHD. " In 2006, the FDA approved risperidone for the treatment of irritability in children and adolescents with autism.[6] The FDA's decision was based in part on a study of autistic people with severe and enduring problems of violent meltdowns, aggression, and self-injury; risperidone is not recommended for autistic people with mild aggression and explosive behavior without an enduring pattern.
Avatar m tn My Pdoc had suggested an extremely slow tapering of risperidone over 10-12 weeks but I tapered it over 6 weeks and only had minimal withdrawl symptoms.I am yet to go and see him.I am stable on tegretol 1000 mg with no side effects.Hope it stays good.
Avatar n tn I must disagree with the other poster. Risperdal was approved by the FDA for use in children on the spectrum in 2006 to treat *repeated* bouts of aggression and irritability as are other anti-psychotics. My son was diagnosed with Asperger's when he was 3 and has been taking Risperidone (Risperdal) for 4 years in varying dosages. Without it he could not have attended mainstream schooling as his aggressive outbursts were a danger to himself, other children and adults.
Avatar n tn I am posting this in the Eating Disorders forum, mainly because it has to do with vomiting. But my main condition is a personality disorder diagnosed in March 2013. After 3 weeks in a mental health hospital, period in which, without being checked or asked about how I am coping, they upped the anti-psychotic to a schizophrenia dosage. The doctor wrote me the diagnosis of schizotypal personality disorder and sent me home to continue to take Solian(Amisulpride)600mg in two dosages.
Avatar f tn She was on risperidone for many years but stopped abruptly for weight gain?? Hm. Well if that class of antipsychotic medication worked to control her symptoms, there are others in the class. I'd try that. And weight gain---- well, in the area of managing a difficult patient's symptoms, most physicians look at benefits verses cons. If the benefits are greater often a medication is continued even if it has an unwanted side effect.
603015 tn?1329862973 as far as tegretol is by far the least harmful among mood stabilizers i wish i could sustain it, but i couldn't. yes dose is also important and not only the med. I remember to have tried 3mg and i got crazy. There is also something in medicine called idiosyncrasy meaning a certain hypersenstivity to a substance. So for instance i take 3 antipsychotics the least dose in each.
Avatar f tn t know why he does it, and we would disagree if anyone said he was doing it for attention. This child is in crisis. we showered him and got him back into bed. he wasn't told off at all. we then had to start the gargantuan task of cleaning and we thank god that tonight at least, the other young people in the home didn't add to the problem, but actually offered their help.
1985196 tn?1402190098 s only been the last few years i got diagnosed properly ,but they are still not 100% sure about the Bi polar / with psychotic features or Schizoaffective , which is what they call it for now , i don't think there's a whole lot of difference between the 2 though .
1625195 tn?1332178662 BUT this third one I take at night is Risperidone which is the substitute of Risperdal. Can someone PLEASE tell me what Risperdal/Risperidone is for? My doctors were sort of unclear about it and since I was more concerned with getting out of the mental hospital I was in, I forgot to ask them to repeat themselves. Next question, once again, about the Risperidone. Is there any way possible to cut the hunger side-effects? Or any tips to battle the nausea that it causes?
Avatar m tn She also gets up at night and looks for things or wanders around. The consultant has prescribed risperidone, although we were hoping for Aricept. I am very concerned about this as internet research suggests it is for aggressive behaviour and will result in oversedation even drooling. I don't want my mum to be a zombie - I'd just like her to be more like her old self. Does anyone have any experience of this drug at all? I'm not going to give it to her until I learn more.
Avatar n tn m sure there are other options but make sure you decide based on what is best for your stepson.
Avatar m tn Someone told me that for tapering you got to take 0.5mg for a few days and 0.25 mg for a few days before stopping Risperidone totally which I intend to do as even my Pdoc thinks I can be maintained only on Tegretol.Only problem he is out of town till 25th and he wanted a very slow tapering which I did not agree to.
Avatar n tn i gained 50lbs.
1742269 tn?1315381633 Risperadol worked really well for me. The problem is it raised my prolactic levels and caused lactation. That for me is a deal breaker. lol. If it wasn't for that I'd still be on it.
1649932 tn?1348082640 Social anxiety is a common anxiety issue. You are certainly not alone at all. It takes some time for medication to regulate in your system and get working properly. Ive heard it takes from a week to 2 weeks for this to happen. I would contact your psychiatrist, or whoever perscribed you Risperidone, and seek their opinion. Medicine works differently for everyone. What works for me may not work for you, and vice versa.
574118 tn?1305135284 Your seroquel dosing is...odd. Below about 100 mg, it's almost exclusively acting as an antihistamine, not an antipsychotic, which is why you see people on 25 mg for sleep. Risperidone is also a mood stabilizer, but you're on a very low dose of that as well. Perhaps increasing to a therapeutic level of Seroquel or risperidone would be enough (generally better to go up on a med if you can rather than add something new).
Avatar n tn Risperidone is a so-called "blacklisted" drug and is entirely inappropriate for administration to an elderly patient with Alzheimers. Three years ago Johns Hopkins geriatric unit conducted a seminar at Mount Sinai discouraging it's use in the elderly.
