Common Questions and Answers about What is plavix used to treat

plavix

Avatar n tn Until your doctor prescribes you something different to treat this, you should not discontinue use of this as this affects one of your most important organs. Aspirin is used for long term prevention of heart attacks, and is not intended for doing what Plavix does. Book an appointment with your doctor or surgeon and tell them that you are experiencing symptoms.
Avatar m tn Lately, there have many posts related to the duration of plavix and it seems patients are given plavix for a long period of time. It has been my understanding from what I have read and my experience, plavix is recommended for individuals that have a drug eluding stent to help prevent clots for up to a year. That has been my experience. DES when compared to bare metal stent implants have an increase of clots and restenosis for a period of one year...

1210142 tn?1266077031 I think plavix is very important for CAD sufferers. The half life of plavix is short anyway, so if it came to some emergency, it wouldn't take long for the effect to wear off.
Avatar f tn Occlusion means there is blockage of vessels that may cause pain due to a plaque buildup or clot.
Avatar n tn I am 68 and female I have had 1 surgery to clean the artery and am going to have the ither side shortly I am on Plavix aspirin Lipitor and 25 mg of Lopressor I cant get my heart rate below 70 all this discovered in less than a year HELP
Avatar n tn Namenda is used to treat Alzheimer's dementia. This suggests a positive diagnosis for Alzheimers. Find out if this is so. Plavix is a controversial drug. It prevents clotting. It also increases the possibility of a stroke from a bleed. One question in my mind is whether he had a stroke which caused him to fall, or he fell and struck his head and sustained a concussion or bleed inside the brain which, in turn caused the dementia. You need to question his physicians.
Avatar f tn I was also advised to stop Plavix about three weeks ago, and have no problems. I was kept on the drug for three years after my last stent because I went through a very, very active CAD period resulting in multiple stents. I was told I might have to be on it for life, but the fact that I haven't had a blockage since 2007 and my blood is thinned very well with just one 81mg aspirin. I'm delighted.
Avatar n tn I just received a drug eluting stent last month and having a hard time adjusting to all the meds. I was on Plavix and was told I would be on that for 1 year. I ended up being allergic to the Plavix and the dr. switched me to Ticlid. Which I will be on for 1 year, so they say. And aspirin too. Is it true that you can still have chest pains with this type of stent?
Avatar f tn I don't know about "normal," but if the regimen of warfarin and Plavix is working for you, then great. Your goal is to find something that works. Have you been tested for clotting disorders? Your story makes me wonder about that, especially if the stroke happened to be due to a clot.
Avatar m tn So, depending on how long she will have to take the plavix for, and what she is taking it for, it may actually be less expensive to use the plavix.
Avatar n tn Unfortunately, he or she is unlikely to know anything about it and might be hostile to it, as most docs are to natural remedies. Moringa is mostly used for nutritional purposes in its native India, and its most known and accepted medicinal effect is antibiotic. It doesn't appear to interfere with Plavix, but Plavix is a drug that has a lot of contraindications, so I would be careful about most anything I took if I was on Plavix.
Avatar m tn It can be overwhelming when you start hearing a lot of information at once and it is easy to forget what other questions that you have. Also, you can ask your doctor/NP for any written materials that they may have in regards to your diagnosis, treatments, etc. If you feel that your health care practitioner is not willing to spend time with you and answer your questions, then you should look for another doctor/NP. However, don't put off treatment until you find a doctor that you like.
255163 tn?1376869746 After my bypass in July I was on plavix for a month but then my doc took me off. However, in Nov. I had to have a stent put in and my doc put me on plavix again as well as up my asperin dose to a full. He told me he wanted me on the plavix for at least a year. Come May I'll be able to lower the asperin dose and next Nov. I'll be off the plavix. It's ashame your doc's can't communicate with each other. Maybe you could have them contact each other.
Avatar n tn Plavix/clopidogrel is mainly an anti-platelet drug (they are *usually* used artery-side, e.g., to prevent strokes or heart attacks). The other drugs mentioned are anticoagulants (which interfere with coagulant proteins such as Factor Xa -- they are usually used venous-side, e.g., preventing DVT after orthopedic surgery). Either type might be used for the in between, which is the heart: for AFib clotting/strokes. I don't know why your doc preferred to prescribe Plavix for DVT.
Avatar n tn In 2005 had MI with occlusion of the LAD artery and had drug stent inserted and I am still on plavix. My doc has debated when to take me off the Plavix safely....what are the recent studies about this dilemma? thanks so much!
Avatar m tn re hesitant to share this with your colleagues, but you need to determine exactly what is going on. I would go out of town to seek help if you're concerned about what others will think. I would think a close friend could be of help with this. I know how very difficult this is for you but you have the lives of others to consider as always. If you feel incompetent then step down, until this is resolved.
Avatar m tn I'm a 78 yr old woman who had a lumpectomy 5 weeks ago for triple negative breat cancer.3 nodes were removed and my margins are clear. I'm on Plavix-was not originally bridged and had a stroke 3 days after being told to go off Plavix by my breast surgeon. No initially drain was put in.I have had 3 infections which resulted in two drains going in and 3 rounds of antibiotic's-I was told clots developed.
Avatar m tn Aspirin and Plavix (dual therapy) is recommended up to about a year after a stent(s) implant to help prevent any clots from forming at the site of the implant. Circumstances may exist that continued plavix medication may be prescribed for longer periods of time. Structual collapse of a stent would indicate an improper size or defect. I discontinued plavix after year, and I have never heard of plavix associated with a collapsed stent! There may be a misunderstanding.
Avatar n tn If you are referring to Plavix (clopidogrel) and Aspirin, I would take them for life. The general rule used to be aspirin for life, plavix for a year. However, more and more cases of forming clots in stents were appearing when plavix was stopped, so now the general trend is changing towards life.
Avatar m tn After a year there is no evidence to suggest plavix has any benefits as the stent is well embedded in the artery lining by then. However, this is related directly to benefits affecting stents, because both plavix and aspirin will continue to reduce clotting times in your blood as long as you take them. I am on plavix for life and not aspirin, because aspirin gave me too many gastric issues.
Avatar m tn Pradaxa is normally used in the treatment of blood clots due to A-fib or other rhythm issues when there is no heart valve disease and Plavix is a stronger drug used to help prevent clots in the arteries primarily after heart surgery. Both are good drugs and either should work from what I understand.
Avatar f tn it is hard to say how best to treat the psvt because there are so many different types of psvt. it depends on what it is.
Avatar n tn Severe joint and back pain usually is not a side effect of Plavix. Coumadin is more powerful than Plavix. The Plavix is important to take especially if you have coated stents. You may want to be checked for arthritis that may be flaring up. Coumadin is not to be used in persons with high cholesterol.
Avatar f tn Plavix has a unique mechanism of action by blocking the amplification of platelet activation by released ADP, and often used with aspirin to prevent the risk of clots for the first year after DES implant. Plavix and aspirin have different mechanism of action to prevent clots. After a year, plavix is usually discontinue as the risk for clots is decreased, and aspirin is continued long term. The risk of a clot is about 3%.
