Avatar f tn These medications are also used to treat Trichotillomania and OCD and include clomipramine, fluoxetine (prozac), sertraline, paroxetine, fluvoxamine, citalopram, escitalopram, nefazodone and venlafaxine. These new generation antidepressants - the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors - are really safe. I'm on them myself. You can also try some behaviour therapy like habit reversal training and with Exposure and Response Prevention which some nail biters find helpful. Hope that helps!
Avatar m tn Fluoxetine or Prozac elevates mood, increases physical activity and restores interest in everyday pursuits. Prozac is used to treat depression , to reduce binge eating and purging activity ( bulimia nervosa) and to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder. Fluoxetine is broken down slowly and remains in the body for several weeks after treatment is stopped. Do not stop the drug without consulting your doctor, who may supervise a gradual reduction in dosage.
Avatar f tn A child psychiatrist and counselor have both suggested putting him on Fluoxetine along with Cognitive therapy. -- your words I'm assuming your son has been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. If so, this is the usual treatment for a child as old as yours. By the way, Fluoxetine is not an addictive medication so if it does not work (and you will know quite shortly after beginning the medication), it can be stopped "cold".
Avatar f tn My dosages have ranged from 75-125. My shrink has decided to take me off Venlafixine and go back on Fluoxetine. I used to take Fluoxine for 20 something years but went into a BIG depression about 1.5 years ago so I was switched to Venlafaxine. The reasons I am being switched to way too long to type here but this is my question .... My shrink told me to stop the Venlafaxine one day and start Fluoxetine 20mg the next day. Shrink said there would be NO side effects. How can this be?
1001742 tn?1252685847 Escitalopram belongs to the group of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). It works by increasing levels of a neurotransmitter called serotonin in the brain. Increased serotonin levels can lead to an improved mood. I was prescibed this for my anxiety by my family doctor although I'm not sure if I should take this if I will **** dirty at the meth clinic.
Avatar f tn Antidepressant drugs, analgesics and muscle relaxants have been used frequently to treat fibromyalgia. Amitriptyline and Fluoxetine also have been used to treat fibromyalgia. If the diagnosis of fibromyalgia is confirmed then you have to start with these. I feel that you need to consult an orthopedician or rheumatologist and discuss the possibility of fibromyalgia with them. Hope it helps. Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing.
20003388 tn?1515166040 My problem is, since I switched to Fluoxetine I had been having difficult falling asleep at night, one extreme to another lol. Clearly I have some mental health issues, hence the Fluoxetine but I also take Duloxetine for pain/anxiety. This combo seems to work great. My head is clear and I have energy I haven't had in years. I wouldn't want to stop either medication but I NEED to be able to sleep at night. I've tried everything. Ambien doesn't work. Trazodone doesn't work.
1227049 tn?1267237385 From around the age of 14 til 18 I was prescribed both fluoextine and risperidone, sometimes I was on one or the other and at one point, both at the same time. Both of these were used to treat clinical depression I was suffering from at the time, I am not on either of these drugs currently. Recently however, I have been concerned that using these two drugs may have stunted my growth.
Avatar m tn My psychiatrist made me take Fluoxetine to treat depression like 3 years ago. I began to have trouble getting an erection ever since. I stopped taking it about 2.5 years ago but the problem persisted. This has caused me severe distress... I lost the woman I loved because of this problem. Sometimes I can have an erection and sometimes I just can't, or it's very weak. I've been taking quetiapine and lamotrigine to treat bipolar disorder for about 1.5 years.
Avatar n tn ) I have tried some counselling which has somewhat helped but I truely think time and persistence is going to be the key to my recovery. Luckily I have been funded to go and see a psych and am hoping I can get some valuable information from that. Thanks for your replies I really appreciate it.

543959 tn?1301315419 hello, just wondered if anyone has any advice, im currently taking 40mg of fluoxetine but feel this is not quite enough, my doc wont prescribe me 60mg dose but instead has given me 10mg buspirone to take alongside the fluoxetine. has anybody taken this combination of meds and is it helpful?
Avatar f tn t know if these side effects are just in my head, if the numbness is just my inability to deal with problems or if it is actually the Fluoxetine. Should I up my dosage or ask if I could change meds???
Avatar f tn Hi, yeah what Paxiled says is true. SSRIs and SNRIs don't seem to have food interaction. The odd one will tekk you to avoid raspberry or grapefruit juice, but that's it. If you want an appetite Citalopram encourages food consumption. Have tried most SSRIs and snris, although everyone's experience, side effects etc are mostly different.
1063764 tn?1272821064 Then again, everyone has their own peculiarities when it comes to this stuff. Melatonin is a hormone made naturally by the body to set the body clock and as an antioxidant. It doesn't affect serotonin in any direct way, but obviously if you're not sleeping well it won't help serotonin do its thing. I use melatonin with Celexa and have used it with Paxil and Lexapro, and haven't had a problem, nor have I heard of any problems with melatonin.
Avatar f tn The thing to be aware of here, is not necessarily the class of drug it is, when it comes to pregnancy, but the Pregnancy Labeling itself, that is, that this drug in particular is a Pregnancy Category C drug...the FDA sets up what each category means, specifically, as to recommendations for prescribing. This drug, is a teratogenic drug, and it should only be given if absolutely necessary.
Avatar n tn I have a question. Are drugs in the benzo family ever used to treat seizures? As in Xanax, Klonopin, Valium, Ativan, Restoril, etc? I have simple partial seizures and was on xanax on an "as needed" basis to control some nervousness about going back to college. I was on it for about 2 months. I started realizing I got less of my sensory and motor seizures which have always been uncontrollable since I started getting them back in 2000.
Avatar f tn A safe way to start a med that is done by good psychiatrists is to taper you up slowly to a therapeutic dose to allow your body to get used to it just as stopping is done at a taper slow enough to minimize discomfort. I hope whatever you choose to do helps you.
Avatar n tn m in great need to be on it again but I am aware that the drug falls under a catagory C (to not take when pregnant) I dont want to put myself at harm so I need to know what anti- depresent to take that would not cause any birth defects or harm to the unborn child.
Avatar f tn I was aking effexor for five years, which helped my deprssion and did not affect my weight, BUT, they made me more anxious if i missed just one, and was grinding teeth all the time, and found it a struggle to come off them. Hd to change to fluoxetine because i fell pregnant, baby is 11months now, but im stll about 3 and half stone overweight , despite very healthy eating , and excercise, which is why i think its the fluoxetine. Please help me im so confused.
Avatar m tn m getting from your message is that his doctor is taking him from 20 mg to 40 mg and ultimately to 60 mg correct? The Xanax is to help calm his anxiety that he is having. Here's the thing though. It usually takes a good 4 to 6 weeks before the therapeutic dosage is built up in his system. So it could be that the doctor is trying to see if he can tolerate a higher dose and taking him there slowly. The Xanax is good. It is quick acting but doesn't last very long in the system.
Avatar n tn My recommendation at this point would be to go back on a low dose of Lexapro--maybe half of what you used to take. If the symptoms go away, then you know they were related to the Lexapro; you could then taper more slowly, or do the fluoxetine thing. If you still have vertigo after a couple days on the small dose of Lexapro, then the symptoms are not part of Lexapro discontinuation. The latter outcome would not surprise me, frankly...
Avatar m tn Chemically, the fluoxetine hydrochloride (prozac is the original trademarked term but the patent's expired so it can be made generically) ought to be identical, regardless of its makers' labelling, colouring, packaging (as a tablet or capsule). Prozac has been generic for a very long time, there are several companies now making generic versions. Precisely which were your before and after brands of generic prozac (fluoxetine hydrochloride)?
