Common Questions and Answers about What is effexor used for

effexor

Avatar n tn ve already indicated, this could also be start-up side effects of Effexor for you. Effexor is an intentionally stimulating antidepressant, and some will have increased anxiety on it because of this. Some won't. Some will have less. Celexa is an ssri, the most used antidepressants for anxiety sufferers. While Celexa works on serotonin, Effexor works on both serotonin and norepinephrine, and the latter is one of the brain's stimulants.
Avatar f tn I just started taking Effexor XR 3 wks ago and I was wondering if anyone has had a good experience with this med as a preventative? If so, what is the appropriate dosage for migraine prevention? I am on 75 mg once a day. Also, I started taking taking 500mg of GABA and 200mg of l-theanine before bed to help me sleep. I have been having trouble sleeping since December (break-up). That is why I am taking the effexor. The GABA/theanine combo has helped with the sleep greatly.
Avatar n tn Effexor is for anxiety and depression. My Dr. might try me on it. Right now he's got me on Paxil 10mg and I'm not seeing too much of a change on it. If you liked Effexor, had no side effects, and had no problem coming off... (which, you should always wean, even if you didnt have any problems stopping cold turkey), then talk to your Dr. about getting back on it. That is if you are having anxiety again. Don't just take it b/c you want to lose more weight. Hope this helped.
Avatar f tn I have had 3 in the last 3 days and am living in fear of the next one. Is it the Effexor withdrawl? Is the Prozac not working? I am also on 200mg Lamictal. I do not think that I am bipolar. Doc said that the panic attacks may be manic symptoms and so she told me to take zyprexa 2.5mg at night, stop the prozac and take 37.5 of effexor until she gets back in town. She told me that she thinks that I am bipolar but I don’t understand why.
Avatar f tn Only thing to worry about with snris is they are stimulating because of their effect on norepeniphrine, so they're not usually used if anxiety is the main problem. If anxiety is the result of depression, that's a different story. Also, Pristiq is basically Effexor, so if the Effexor gave you problems, you might want to think about taking what is mostly the same thing updated to get more patent protection, kind of like Celexa and Lexapro. Not exactly the same drug, but very similar.
Avatar f tn It seems like it took a month to get the effexor out of my system. It was rough. Perhaps, that is what is happening to you. Replacing it with something else is a good idea but it takes a couple of weeks to start working. I am not sure what Lamictal is as I haven't taken it. At one point in my life I was on three medications but as time goes by the general idea is to see a therapist and you can get free therapy if you don't make too much money anywhere. Ask you doctor.
Avatar m tn I have been suffering from chronic pain. My doctor has prescribed Effexor for the depression that goes along with the chronic pain. I've read a little about Effexor and am not sure this is right for me. The dose now is 25mg once a day with food and increasing to 2 times a day as "tolerable". Any one here have experience with this stuff?
Avatar n tn If you are getting brain zaps it is withdrawal, so being panicky to the point of forgetting how to concentrate is natural. Did you taper and discuss what to do with your doc? What is your plan once you have these meds out of your system? I don't know anything about going off these 2 but maybe someone else can help if you provide more info too.
Avatar m tn Also, this is the Anxiety forum, and Effexor is more for depression, though it can be helpful if the anxiety is the result of depression as it very often is. St. John's Wort is only for depression, not for anxiety, and taking one herb probably won't help you if your problem was so bad you actually needed the Effexor.
Avatar f tn I was on Lexapro for six months and then came off. My panic attacks returned so I returned to the Lexapro for a year and then came off again. My reasons for coming off were my own not wanting to be on a permanent drug that I may not need anymore. I am very sensitive to medicine. Usually the lowest effect dose offered is 10mg. I would cut it in half for 5 and that was all I needed. Within a few hours of missing a dose I would begin to have side effects, so these were my reasons for stopping it.
Avatar n tn I did ask the doctor to clarify the prescription and he said it is used to relieve abdominal pain in some patients. If he is prescribing effexor for anxiety symptoms, I would think he would say so or direct me to a Psychiatrist.
Avatar f tn I can understand your concerns. My daughter is 14, and has been on Effexor XR for three years. The doctor had her stop because it was making her manic. She is going through extreme withdrawals at this time...racing heart, blurred vision, dizziness, vomiting, nauseau and bowel problems. It is a complete mess and I have no idea when the end is in sight. Her doctor had her on 150 a day (75mg in the morning and 75 in the evening). Two weeks ago she dropped to 75 mg in the morning for one week.
746058 tn?1248344665 Hi, My name is Lois (Groggyfroggy) I'm new here. My OBGYN also put me on Effexor for hot flashes and night sweats because I wasn't a candidate for hormone therapy and I'm going thru' menopause. I happen to have POTS, but wasn't put on the medication for the POTS. I became very sick after that with nausea, shakiness, and a most terrible moodiness. I had to be taken off the medication and it took quite a while to get out of my system.
1056235 tn?1254236885 My doctor now is going to try me of Effexor. This is probably going to be trial-and-error for awhile until something helps me. My husband is afraid that I will abuse benzos, because I took too many Klonopins thinking I needed more to help me because i felt so depressed on Klonopin. Anyway, the only thing so far that has helped my anxiety are benzos but those seem to be out of the picture so what medication will help me not to have them???? Does anybody know or have some experience with this???
Avatar f tn Effexor is indicated for GAD and is often used with success as the first agent. So, trust your doctor rather than the internet because there is, as you see, differences in what 'people' think, believe and know. Your doctor knows what he is doing over and above . . . us. And Effexor is a powerful agent for generalized anxiety and used first line with great success. No reason to believe you will not have this same success yet. Let us know how it turns out but stick with it.
309783 tn?1271958229 Viepax is simply a new generic version of Effexor XR (Extended Release) The active ingredient is Venlafaxine. (Same as in Effexor XR) The patent on Effexor XR ran out about 8 months ago and now other pharm companies can make generic extended release Effexor. In the last 7 years Effexor XR has made Weith Pharm company 3.5 Billion dollars per year. That Billion not Million. Now you can see why other pharm companies are so eager to get their generic version to market.
Avatar f tn Effexor is not generally used when anxiety is the primary problem. That's why you should see a psychiatrist, not a regular doc. Effexor targets not only serotonin but also norepinephrine, which is basically adrenaline. This is meant for people whose primary problem is depression. Now, that doesn't mean it never works for anxiety, but ssris or tricyclics would normally be tried first for this problem, not snris.
Avatar f tn I really thought that at 11 months I would be feeling that life is great and could see what all my hard work is for.
Avatar m tn OP...what you describe is very typical for intial side effects of Effexor. Like the others said, if you can manage to stick it out for a few weeks, most likely the side effects will start to diminish, then disappear all together. These meds take some time and patience to start noticing improvement and get past any side effects.
Avatar f tn Well as said above you are on a starter dose of Effexor. Usually it is increased as your body gets used to it. If you really want to stop taking the Effexor, tell your doctor, and then taper, VERY SLOWLY. I mean SLOWLY. It took me months to withdraw, but I had no withdrawals. If you do it too fast you will get withdrawals, however as you are on a very low dose, it will not take you too long to withdraw. Yes even it you miss one dose of Effexor, you will feel bad.
Avatar f tn t know why the doctor did that but I think if I taper off Effexor first and then start on Cymbalta, it is going to take long time to start feeling any improvement. Honestly, iam really tired and got impatient cz my situation is intolerable and I can't live this way. I can't explain how tough and sad is my situation now.
Avatar m tn first of all, i'd like to say best of luck to you. i can understand what you are going through as i am also currently trying to quit effexor xr. and i want to tell you that there is hope. there is light at the end of the tunnel. i was prescribed this drug (street drug in my view) around 12 yrs ago, by a very close relative. i was raised in a highly dysfunctional family, my parents fought like dogs all day every day. around age 17 i started getting depressed.
1305418 tn?1273166683 This particular drug is a selective beta blocker used in the treatment of high blood pressure, migraine headaches, and chest pain. However, having said that, I do not know your full history and therefore would defer to your physician/s. BuSpar is used primarily as an anxiolytic, but also to a lesser extent as an antidepressant. It is also prescribed to aid patients who wish to quit smoking. Hope this information is of assistance to you.
