Avatar n tn I have a question. Are drugs in the benzo family ever used to treat seizures? As in Xanax, Klonopin, Valium, Ativan, Restoril, etc? I have simple partial seizures and was on xanax on an "as needed" basis to control some nervousness about going back to college. I was on it for about 2 months. I started realizing I got less of my sensory and motor seizures which have always been uncontrollable since I started getting them back in 2000.

Avatar f tn We rushed her to emergency, but it took about ten minutes to get there and another ten for them to treat her symptoms before she stopped. She did not have a fever. She was given ativan and dilantin intravenously at this time. A CT scan returned negative. The next morning she was given 150 mg of dilantin and walked like a drunken sailor for the rest of the day (she weighs 20kg). We are waiting for an EEG and, in the meantime she has been prescribed phenobarbitol. This worries me.
542332 tn?1214592336 My surgeon has my switching from Gabapentin to Dilantin, by early this week I should be solely on 400 to 500 MG of dilantin per day however it is doubtful if the meds will fully control the pain so then my only real option is an injection which may cause permanent facial numbness. I would like to know if anyone else has had to deal with recurrent trigeminal neuralgia and if so what was your outcome?

Avatar m tn Zonisamide is totally unrelated to any of the other anticonvulsants, but, like Keppra, the full extent of its side effects is not yet known so to some vets, it is somewhat controversial to prescribe it. Dilantin, Valium, potassium bromide and felbamate, along with phenobarbital, are all tried and true when it comes to treating idiopathic epilepsy.
Avatar f tn According to my Lippincott nursing drug book, Phenytoin (Dilantin) may decrease the effect of the steroid when used together. Therefore the steroid dosage would be adjusted according to what your physician prescribes. It does also state that prednisone is used cautiously in patients with history or seizures. There is nothing specific about those anticonvulsant med levels being affected. But I'm sure your physician will be monitoring you carefully.
Avatar f tn Sometimes the headaches turn to a severe migraine, but mostly they just lurk at a level of moderate discomfort. Is it the dilantin? Is this just they way things will be? MRI results found a sizeable arachnoid cyst in the back of his brain, but the doctors don't feel that this is a likely root of the seizures. They also have found no other explanation. He's too tired, confused and not-with-it enough to pursue a more aggressive avenue of questions with doctors...

Avatar f tn Hello Dear, Stopping Dilantin quickly is not recommended. Although Dilantin is not addicting and is not likely to be abused, stopping it too quickly can cause seizures to worsen. Dilantin Withdrawal Symptoms The most significant Dilantin withdrawal symptom is a seizure. Suddenly stopping Dilantin can increase your risk of seizures These seizures can be especially severe and very difficult to control.

3921209 tn?1348605095 The medications used to control seizures can cause side effects like the ones you describe. I would recommend consulting your Neurologist. Together, you and your Neurologist can weigh the pros and cons of taking Dilantin or possibly another medication.
Avatar n tn 1. The capsules are different. The two halves of the old one were sealed with a band, and the new one is self-locking. 2. The ingredients are bioequivalent, but they may not be identical in type or quantity. That means that tests indicate that the body reacts virtually the same to both versions. 3. The ingredients are secret. The amounts are secret. Sugar is likely to be one of the ingredients in the old or new versions (or both). 4.

Avatar n tn Low blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D may mean that you are not getting enough exposure to sunlight or enough dietary vitamin D to meet your body’s demand or that there is a problem with its absorption from the intestines. Occasionally, drugs used to treat seizures, particularly phenytoin (Dilantin), can interfere with the production of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the liver. It can also be due to parathyroid gland problems. Very few foods in nature contain vitamin D.
Avatar m tn If the list is in Response to 63ScorpioBoy, the question is, "what do you really feel" vs the copy & paste list.
